...Fred in a shed basically!

Very much a chav I’d say he was, came out shirtless with a big gold chain on when I dropped the car off

but was extremely friendly and seemed to know about cars

dont judge a book by it’s cover, I’m impressed so far

stupidly cheap tbh

Once you've done a few cambelta they are less scary tbh.

So it's the XM for shitefest then! Is the engine any quieter with the new tensioners and pulleys?

Asked him if he refurbs auto boxes yet? 😂

you know it does seem to run better!

unless it's going to be 30c the entire time i'll be in the XM

if it's going to be excessively hot, i'm sorry, i value comfort and i'll be in the C5

Bloody glad I got the belts done

timing belt was really worn, cracked and actually had missing teeth!!

water pump was leaking

big aux belt was cracked, had chunks missing from it

small belt was cracked

all brand new belts now thankfully, seems I did it just in the nick of time

keep an eye on the coolant level. they are very good at self bleeding but are likely to need topping up once or twice as they bleed, and not easy to see level in the black header tank

What is the gauge for the correct level?

I just dumped a load in

i put silicate coolant in as being old i thought it would need that

Its a bit difficult to tell, its a good few mm from the top of the bottle, too high and it spits from the overflow, but if you can see any of the baffles inside its too low.   Just keep checking it (when cool obviously!) as it may drop when the system bleeds itself.  After a few days it should stabilise and not drop anymore

(assuming series 1 tank is samw as series 2)

On my s2 the contact pins for the level sensor only went halfway down the expansion bottle. So when the dash warning goes you've hopefully still got half a tank. I think I just topped it to the top of the tank, needed a squash bottle or similar to raise the level above the cap to bleed it

Take a squash bottle of coolant with you to sf, that'll bleed any air out then check it when it's cold

On a normal car, the washer bottle filler is easy to access and you can easily pour it in without spilling

on a Picasso, it’s somewhat sensible but if you spill any then it goes straight into the alternator!

on the C5 it’s in a sensible location, but don’t dare push the lid on too hard or else the pipe pops under the bumper trim and it’s a pain to get it back

this is the XMs effort, practically impossible to comfortable pour fluid in due to the bonnet being in the way

yes, yes I did spill loads

took 5litres
