In my totally non-scientific analysis of  emmpeegeees, i attribute it to the following factors:

Pointy nose

Whomping great diesel engine.

Same reason the ZX could deliver such economy, when Ford et al could only dream of such figures

I run it on sainsburys own diesel so not v power or anything cos it’s pointless on an XUD

that included driving through Manchester City centre, up steep hills round keighley and going 80 at times on the motorway keeping up with traffic

i reckon if I stuck to 60 and the motorways I could get 60+
from an auto!!!!!

just been "fucking around" with my only fully functional car this evening, this XM

anyway

decided to wash it, got it all shiny n stuff!

then the rear bumper strip was looking very sorry for itself as you can see here

No description available.

No description available.

due to some weird reason, i'm not abysmal at bodywork i decided to paint it

sanded it down of course, terribly, and then used cheap masking tape from the local shop to prevent primer from going on the bodywork

No description available.

look PrOfEsHuNaLl!

No description available.

and here we go, this is it just with primer, and you know what, it actually looks alright from a distance!

tomorrow i shall visit halfrauds and buy some silver paint and finish the job off

it actually has potential to look alright!

otherwise, the XM is being most un XM like and actually being a very reliable car!

So, as I’ve unfortunately scrapped my C5

and the stereo in this sounded awful, I decided to fit the speakers from the C5 to it as they’re only a few months old

fits like a glove!

speaker grille fits perfectly now and looks so much better

so then I decided it was time to replace the rear speakers

now those of you who’ve fitted new rear speakers to an XM will know how fun it is

that only worked to get 2 screws out, in the end I made the executive decision to break them and just force them out

yes, yes I do believe they require replacement!

now all I’ll say is just how staggering the difference in sound quality is now

it actually sounds good!AC0DFCB2-6956-4097-AA19-9FAED44866C9.thumb.jpeg.ab252d030f1399b29ab6e7374be953f7.jpeg

so yes, my only car for the time being

she looks good doesn’t she

Upon driving this fine vehicle this evening I seemed to have suffered a slight thermal event

i noted there seemed to be a clicking noise as well as smoke coming from behind the steering wheel

it was most exciting!

The cause? Sticky indicator stalk

i man handled it a bit and it seems not to be sticky now

i presume not helped by the weather either

Just now, jamescarruthers said:

It’s like driving in a big yellow hug find

I tend to use the headlights of the modern car behind me to see anyway

those super bright LEDs are useful when you’re in an XM, they light the road in front of you

headlights on this are bad enough anyway so these can’t make it any worse

Fixed the intermittent warning of a defective tail lamp

ah you may say, was it a loose connection in the lamp cluster?

no

what about an earth issue?

no, well, technically

so there I was, in a car park, 35 miles from home this morning

taking the electrical system apart, not like I need the car to go to work this afternoon, anyway

unplugged loom connectors, inspected everything

the fault, passenger side electric window switch on the drivers door

dirty connector, cleaned that up and all is fine

Puddle lights are brighter, wipers are faster, and my single working interior light is brighter

plus no more warnings!

with a Citroen XM, the cause of the fault is always the complete opposite thing you’d expect

recent development, sport mode light doesn’t illuminate upon activating the switch, it does with ignition

so that’ll likely be tailgate struts or something daft

i also hear these cars had an absolutely horrendous reputation when new

Time has not improved on that original reputation.

no, i think i've just got lucky

i can see why these could be horrifically unreliable

Mostly electrical I think. I toyed with buying a couple ( nice s1 manual in black with black leather with lovely starfish alloys, and a very late W reg TCT in silver. Both from Roger Bradford, but chickened-out both times.

done more "pissing around" with this today

firstly, i want to fix the fuel solenoid supply so i can remove my questionable bodge

had to find the volt meter, it went missing.....cue an awkward visit to an alarm customers house as it transpired i left it inside their alarm panel??! somehow

anyway

there is a little nut with a spade connector on it supplying the stop solenoid from the cars wiring loom

what's happened, somehow, and i don't know how, is this has snapped off? which caused by non start issue

anyway, checked it and yes there's power there with the ignition on! so i can mend it (which i will do this week)

also i suspect it often sticks in hard mode, with a slightly firm ride and i don't get the EV's buzzing when a door is opened (i get a clunk though)

No description available.

now i'd say this has had the diode repair before, when, i do not know

so i might well try replacing the diodes for new and see where that gets me

cheap and easy to do, again, another job for this week

i must fix this! it's bothering me

erm yeah that was a close one

got in the car upon leaving work and noticed it moved a bit as i got in.......

thought nothing of it, but it wouldn't start, nothing from the starter

i'd left it in drive

i was convinced i put it in park, but i had a moment i'd say

good job no one accidentally nudged the car!

Must have been a good omen that you persisted with this given the C5's expiration!

i'll freely admit i was just about to put it up for sale back in early june!!

then i fell for it, fell in love, i properly love this car

almost 3,000 miles covered now......it's been fine, completely reliable! few little niggles to be expected but other than a belt squeal at the moment it's absolutely fine

turns out this wasn't actually a silly purchase

as it's a rather pleasent evening, and i had just adjusted my headlights, i thought it would be nice to go for a little drive

so that's what i did, it was going absolutely beautifully too! really enjoyed it

i then happened upon some temporary traffic lights

so being the kind person i am, due to it being dark

i decided to pop on the parking brake but leave it in Drive to not blind the people in the car behind

so that's what i did, applied just fine and held the car well.........

you can see where this is going

upon the traffic starting to move, i then released the parking brake

only to be met with a little, dull, thud from behind the lower dash

the handle felt slack and weird and the parking brake was very much applied!

oh dear i thought, this is a rather undesirable development

i was left with little choice other than accelerate pretty hard to not cause a total embarrasment to myself

i had to go for around 1/4 mile before i could find somewhere half reasonable to pull over

yep, no chance of releasing that

quick internet search revealed i can release it with tools......i had no tools!

but, due to me being a lazy bastard it still has the tent pegs in the boot from shitefest

so that was me crawling under the dash, at the side of a busy road messing about with light from the torch of my iphone......excellent!

after much faffing around

i managed to get an absolutely beautiful sight

No description available.

that's right! i released it

now, i must remember to not use it at all until i fix it or else i'll be buggered again

almost an FTP, but not quite!

If you have skills you can swap a heater matrix in minutes on an XM. Even RHD.

LHD you need no skills.

Meanwhile my "omg German quality" Audi 80 was built around that fucking heater matrix.

One of these moments I'd rather have any other car
