"Modern" motoring but yet still SO beige.

Yeh, I really like the 214 especially in 3 door guise (which would now be called a coupe and be £3k more than the 5 door one!) It's just all the grief involved with the K series engine that puts me off them....even Mr AS himself (bollox) had no end of grief with that white 2.0 one but I think it's going great guns now.

That Peugeot 204 is utterly delightful and firmly on my Watch list. Maybe it is time to part with the Scimitar...

The early K series aren't nearly as bad for OMG HGF! and are surprisingly nippy in the R8s. I'd say the earlier the R8 the better the car all round, generally speaking. My H reg 216 is much, much better put together than the later ones.

Mr_Bo11 did seem to have bad luck with his 220 but they are storming cars when they're working. Only real points to watch are the heater valve, the rears of the sills and the rear trailing arm bushes.

daft question: Do the K-series engines actually have a HGF problem, or is all the grief mostly caused by owners who never bother with coolant changes?

For future reference, are we talking about that shape 200 in general?

Combination of both. There is an inherent design weakness (reduced considerably by a later Land Rover gasket kit) but you daren't run one low on coolant. Later MGFs have a low coolant sensor - a very wise addition to anything K.

Other cars blow head gaskets pretty readily. Rover V8s, PSA diesels, some BMWs to name a few. Not changing the coolant is the biggest cause I reckon.

From the perspective of material quality and the general feel of them, i'd say so, yes. The later ones just feel that bit cheaper IMO.

Doesn't help that they replaced the original alloy inlet manifold with a plastic one. The rubber gasket on these was never great (resulting in a modded version) and could result in you loosing coolant down the back of the block. The coolant capacity is fairly small so a small leak can rapidly become an issue.

While I notice a lot of people say the earlier R8 Rovers are better, our one is a later one, maybe one of the last 414s? It's on an N-plate. We've had it since 2002 and it was pretty much trouble free aside from a gearbox change right up until it hit a bloody big pot hole and brought on HGF. I make that connection because it cut out when it hit the pothole it never ever ran properly since. HGF sorted it ran fine until human error on one of the belts pretty much seized the engine and it's now sitting in the garden waiting for the time to put a new engine in it. The bodywork is straight and no rust on it though it could do with a new front bumper. I prefer the boot ones like ours and isn't two tone which again I prefer and one day soon hopefully it'll be back to its best. A friend had an early 214 in the same colour but two toned and that ran for years with no issues and was only weighed in when they "upgraded" to a new Fiesta.
