So my latest shitey purchase - 1972 Capri GT thats had a 1.8TD from a p100 shoved in for bonus shite points

Its very solid, needs a bit of tidying around the paint and some general TLC, but it was very cheap for one of these, and with free tax and 50mpg I don't think I can go wrong. planning to run it everyday.

Top of my to do list is to sort out the comedy electrics and the windows that need the strength of popeye to open. Plus i need to lose the godawful spoiler

So that's what you bought! Not sure about the greaser, otherwise nice!

Nice! Didn't use to belong to a lad from Mid-Wales once did it? I remember a lad at a garage in Newtown built a TD Capri a few years back and I'm sure it was yellow. He also had a very tasty green Mk1 at the same time.

noooo smoke , no poke :lol::lol: looks a quality purchase that 8)8)

In fairness Pintos are rattly and smoky anyway so it makes no difference  I'll probably convert it back before i sell it but a mega mpg motor is exactly what i need at the moment.Wonder if i can get away with running it on veg oil?Cavette - may well be from Wales its got no history with it whatsoever, I bought it in Ayr and the seller just said he'd got it "down south" Interestingly enough it has been green at some point if the flakes in the paint underbonnet are anything to go by

Let us know how it goes. A VERY interesting and courageous buy for a daily driver.

Only if it has a Bosch pump, I'm not sure what pump a P100 would have but my 1.8TD Escort had a Lucas one. The Lucas one will run on veg but not for long.

yes bosch ones on VW's work great on veggie oil and it's said its alot kinder for your engine

Never seen a Ford 1.8TD with a Bosch pump, but you could run it on vegetable oil with a simple twin tank conversion if it has a Lucas. That's an ace buy, I love unlikely diesel conversions. I bet it's reasonably nippy compared with most standard Capri engines.

HOLY COW!That is frigging ACE.75 or 90 hosses???I'd love that, I could hink about all i liked without getting grief off the financial controller.

That is bloody lovely, nice one! I was looking forward to hearing what you had found, didnt think it would be this.I heard a diesel Mondeo the other day with a dump valve, sounded good in a bizzare sort of way.

I'm sure this was for sale at Affordable Classics about three to for years ago. If anyone has some back issues of Practical C*****s I'm sure it will be in the classified section.

Posted

That is fantastic.Don't think it will run veg oil though  Filtered used engine oil with 10% kerosene might work .Only smokes on start-up then it's fine.Fuel filter changes every 500 miles which might be tiresome

I shudder to think what un-affordable classics wuld have wanted for it - I paid a shade under £1500 for it which is very cheap for any kind of mk1 capri thats not covered in more rust than the Titanic. The seller was *interesting* - took TEN DAYS from my enquiry for him to get back to me to arrange to see the thing. But he seemed reasonable once I showed up, although the car was filthy and sitting on near flat tyres.Once I got it home i hit it with the polish and its looking a lot better now.Not sure if its a 75 or 90 horse beast, I'm taking it down to whitevanman's at the weekend who is the font of all knowledge on these engines so he will know when he sees it! It is surprisingly nippy in the capri once the turbo kicks in.Just agreed a deal on the SD1 as well, so its off to live in Glasgow with the area rep of the SD1 club. I'm glad its not going to some twat who'll just nick the engine out of it.May well be flogging the Cortina S as well....

nice buy! i find cars with retro fitted diesel engine brilliant

I do think a XUD motor out of an ex GPO MGB Pilot Would make a nice installation into a tidy A60 Farina. Probably see an improvement in performance as well as economy.

Keep it in the family! Put a Rover L-series or Perkins Prima in there, they are descended from the B-series anyway.

I agree but the LDV has a north/south installation which would make an easier transplant.

I can really see the attraction with this , great buy

£1995 rings a bell so good work!

The perkins prima from a montego is a popular option for old Land Rovers, so there is a north/south kit for it.
The LDV 200 had a Perkins Prima as standard fit before they started using the XUD. One of those should be a pretty easy swap into a Farina.

The one car I've wanted for the last 30 odd years is a 3.0 Mk1 Capri in yellow.PLEASE un-diesel that. It's more than slightly wrong. A diesel Capri is more wrong than scrappaging Tagoras.

Posted

Why's it so wrong? It's not like the Capri is some kind of high class sports car.

personally speaking I think its a great idea, did the same to my Black Cortina estate...its a 75BHP engine if its out of the P100, easy to up the power to 90BHP though 8) I also love retro fitted diesel engines...they are so wrong sometimes.......... 8)8)

i like it aswell,if my bud andy ever gets his finger out and joins i'll get him to tell you about his td minor van.first incarnation was a na diesel running gear out of an fso caro!last weekend he fitted the td from a 405 i think, his own words were its either gonna end up on its roof or through a hedge !

Correct, Down to the magic of the wayback machine website i have found the original advert from May 2004... (don't look at the prices of the other cars, they will only make you sad. )http://web.archive.org/web/200406042144 ... orsale.htm

The heartbreaking thing is knowing that those immaculate rwd scrotes will look a bit different now...
