THE GUBBERMINT ALWAYS KNOWS BEST

I have had the tank out of my Argenta today AGAIN, swilled it out, cleaned out the filler neck (rusty inside), sacked off the knackered, rustty sender unit and replaced it with a potentiomenter and float from an E36 BMW, put the whole lot back together, it will have to wait till I can fill the tank properly to see how it works though. Also had the front pipe off and repaired a fractured weld that was causing a horrible death rattle from the exhaust. Oh and chucked in some new pads. Now it sounds freakin ace!!! I reckon i'll get it in for a test next weekend.

After doing 550 miles in the scim last week it had developed an unhapy tendancy to stall when idling (at virtually every junction.) :?

I'd run through some of the possibilitys hoping it wasnt a sign of something more severe. but I had a look at it today and a filling the tank up and a change of filters seems to have cured things. I really like simple fixes.

Been running the Proton more often to try and get it back into the way of regular usage. Been fine so far, until this afternoon when it started as normal and proceeded to idle like a bag of arses. Foot flat to the floor to keep it running resulted in an idle of about 1000rpm before it seemed to wake up and the revs climbed to it's usual cold start temp of about 1750rpm. Bit more hesitant than usual but doesn't seem to be anything serious. Need to take it out tomorrow again and see if it's still playing silly buggers.

2CV has clocked up 400 miles since Thursday, on a motorway-avoidance trip to Peterborough, then Prescott hillclimb for two days and then home.

Also included a full on blat up Prescott Hill during the cavalcade. For some reason, a Morgan Super Aero was in front of me and my mate and he kept stopping. Frustrating! Had massive fun demonstrating bodyroll though, and am now thinking that the 2CV may be the tool of choice for Retro-Rides in August...

Been supa busy today!

The Argenta is now running and driving tip top, I am gonna get it tested next weekend and launch proceedings with the DVLA to get a UK reg for it. ime to get stuck into this thing!

I decided to free up the brakes a bit to at least make it driveable. But:

I ended up stripping the calipers off, plus the steering rack (knackered) plus most of the front end.

Drivers side wing is coming off next for a bit of welding and fettling, in the meantime I am hammering the Visa card buying a new rack, hoses and caliper seals. PLus tomorrow at 11 am this Croma is arrriving! SHITEFEST 2011!

Redid the stereo wiring so i can have some banging tunes and the general public can hate me even more

Been stupid again.

Went knocking doors... *might* soon be custodian of an F-reg Volvo 760 Turbo... hopefully just a might, don't have room for another big grey rotten Volvo...

just noticed mot expired last week for my 940... then after giving me not a hint of trouble all winter. the battery decides to die today... now i dont know whether i can be bothered putting it thru an mot or to just send it over the bridge

Might aswell bosh it in for a test, unless you suspect it'll fail in an epic fashion. I'd love a 940 estate one day, even if its just for a little bit...

Now that does look rather hot. How's it running, didn't you have some problems with it on the way home?

I have been giving my little SJ Jago a good hammering over the past few weeks, it's performing exceedingly well, I knocked the exhaust off on a tree stump, and snapped the speedo cable on a branch, but these are the only casualties so far!

This was Sundays ending....

I'm enjoying the Bolx updates.

Wat... any pics of the 305 in daylight with those rims? I bet they transform the look completely.

Well, this one has gone:

I did a buy-one-get-one-free listing, and got shut of this too...

Both were loaded up with sets of wheels and other spares, so that paid off some bills and freed up some space to set about the Lada. Weldathon imminent!

I bought this a couple of months ago.

2 owners from new (first from June 96 until 2010), 81k with FCSH, and all the MOT's to back the mileage up. 1800 8V petrol which is doing 35mpg+ on the daily commute and about 44 on a run. Unusually for a Citroen everything electrical (windows, sunroof, central locking etc) works exactly as it should! Wafty Hydropneumatic suspension is excellent (though it's gonna need new spheres sooner rather than later), going from monster truck to lowrider in about as long as it took me to type it.

'Laying some frame for Da Kidz'

Cost me £225 with Mot until mid-May and tax until the end of June.

Done just over 2000m in it since, has used a pint of oil, and that's it. It passed its MOT last weekend with just a driver's side mirror glass and an advisory for 'faded front indicator bulbs'.

Chuffed to bits. 8)

That is nice Brian, I've always had a soft spot for a Xant. It looks like a logical progression from my current daily, a BX14:

In other news, the Rover's clutch is on its way out big style. No fun to drive now. I can find a kit for about £40 delivered (should I hunt down cheaper?) but I'd like to know how many hours of labour I'd be charged to fit it. Any idea? It should be as simple as owt being an R8 214. Ta.

As you can see from the pics above, me and the Rt. Hon. Watanabe spent a few hours last night mucking about with his 305.

Fitted a nice shiny new rotor arm to it, fiddled with the timing a bit, shoved some fresh plugs in and fitted his 106 Rallye rims to it.

It actually sounds very healthy for a Pug lump. No tappet noise or anything untoward. It's still running a tad rich, but even though Jon had ordered the air filter from Peugeot they gave him the wrong one. The one fitted to it is pretty shagged, so could be contributing to it having pretty sooty plugs. The idle mixture screw appears to be bloody weird, but it was going dark when we were fiddling with it - and neither Jon or I have particularly brilliant eyesight so it'll have to wait for another chance to fiddle properly with it and give it an oil and filter change.

1991 Toyota Camry V6 GX by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr

The recently-acquired V6 is now 100% on the road, brought it into work today so my first proper drive in it. Super-smooth! To the extent that much of the time it doesn’t even feel like driving a car around. Getting it roadworthy didn’t exactly require Bo11ox-esque levels of effort – I did no more than change a wiper blade, the garage sorted the brakes and fitted the bit of exhaust I bought – but it still feels satisfying getting something into use which could easily have been weighed-in.

Interesting having an auto again, haven’t had one for too long. Closest comparison I can make with anything I’ve had before would be the 300C saloons. They were also 3-litre V6’s, I’m not sure if it feels much quicker than them but I think being a 24v the grunt is all at the top end. I need to find a clear enough road to press the ‘power’ button on the ‘box and let it hold onto the gears.

Likelihood is I’ll be selling it soon, if the V6 estate ever gets sorted, as I have too much money in it to put it aside for spares and it’s too much of an indulgence to keep on the road, but for now I’ll enjoy it for as long as I can (and can afford to put fuel in it).

Been approached about whether I want to buy some dog eating tat. Sounds promising so far but verbal descriptions can be deceiving. MOT'd and cheap enough though so will see what happens.

Mrs Trigger is struggling to drive the Mk3, if things don't improve soon there might be a change of plan on the cards :?

Posted

Stick with the Mk4 then? Assuming it didn’t sell anyway. Strikes me that it offers a great combination of ‘classic’ appeal with decent useability and comfort levels.

Having said that, I can’t think how the Mk3 would differ much. Neither have PAS, for example. Perhaps it just has minor running/clutch issues that need sorting?

Posted

The strange thing is the Mk4 really drives like a dream, very much like a modern car where as the Mk3 still feel old, the clutch is a little sharp and misses such luxurys as central locking, a 5th gear and most importantly a automatic choke that works!

I would like to keep the Mk3 for a few months and i enjoy the minor fiddling i have to do to it but i feel guilty about it living outside in the rain.

Im sure once she gets the hang of the choke and clutch she'll be fine, oh and the Mk4 only got to £510 on ebay, I was hoping for £600, i just can't justify/afford 4 cars at the moment!

Posted

You might get an auto to manual choke conversion kit on the 'Bay, Trig, possibly NOS. We used to sell shed loads of them, there was one for SU-equipped Austin-Rover stuff which flew off the shelves too. I seem to recall a VW one as well.

Dunno what's on a 1.3 CVH, some had Webers, others had that fucking horrid Ford VV.

Posted

The Mk3 has a manual choke (and vv carbs i think) but Mrs T can't get used to it, to be fair i thought it works perfectly but she's not use to it, she'll get the hang of it though, it's more the clutch i think, although it works fine it is a little sharp so she finds to hard driving in traffic to work in the mornings and she struggles to get reverse in it.

There was a incident at the weekend were she tried to reverse out of a car parking space and got stuck between gears and had a twat in a jaguar start hammering his horn at her which has frightened her of the car a bit now.

2CV has gone in for welding. Scary just how rotten it has got. This is phase one - new arse. Somewhere between now and the next MOT, I'll need to replace the front quarter floors as well. What worries me is that the lower bulkhead area is probably rotten again as well, which means body-off-the-chassis. Again.
