BMWs we like & Scrapped E23 BMW 728

The modern BMW bashing in the GOM thread got me thinking about BMWs I like, and the poor scrapped 728 my friend found in a scrapyard down his way and alerted me of today.

Depressing. I hope it isn't rendered unsaveable by the FIesta parked on its roof. It's apparently mint apart from that.

I like the surprisingly shitey dashboard, look at that heater fan speed dial surrounding the clock! What a neat piece of design. All the labels are quite amusing too, especially the one for 'LIGHTER'.

Anyway, I hope it can be saved as these E23 BMWs are rare now, if anyone wants details of the scrappy (it's in the SE of England) let me know.

I'd love it, but it's a long way and I'm skint.

Also, share some BMWs that you like. Swamp the thoughts of the horrible piggy blingmobiles with some 2000s and E3s.

A tidy E28 would be nice. Got to have lattice wheels though, don't know why but I really think they suit them. Dark colour too.

A guy up the road has a pair of 740i in his garden, both appear to be runners but one is spangly and one is a little ropey. He had a third 7-series but he broke it for spares. Love the understated looks, the fact it resembles a german taxi but has a millionty horsepower.

Anyone for a forgotten supercar?

I had a poster of this on my wall when I was young.

And finally, whilst not being an official model....

What a waste! It's not been scrappaged has it?

Not sure, he said they used to write 'SCRAPPAGE' on the cars but it's not so easy to tell now.Edit: it's been erased from the DVLA database, so I assume it has been scrappaged.

What a pity. Haven't seen such an early one for a long time. It's in better shape than mine, having covered about half the mileage.Aren't those seats nice, though?

It looks far too clean to be there normally, and even a scrap amn knows what he's looking at (I hope) so would have sold it on if possible.

Great shame, if it had two less doors it'd be on ebay OMG BMW NOT M6/M635i/635i RWD RETRO no doubt at a handsome price.

I quite like these being an older BMW pervert, they are quite possibly the least fashionable BMW ever, the ugly duckling that didn't really shine in any area and it had to compete with the beautifull Jaguar XJ6/12 and the beautifully made Mercedes S-Class.

Too big to be a hit with the drift boys, too juicy to run by most other people and not as elegant as a six series nor the E3 predecessor to be coveted by BMW enthusiasts. Alas future for these is quite bleak for the E23 underdog.

There used to be a tidy black 735i smoking around here it looked quite menacing, bit like this:

What a shame about that E23, It does look tidy though they can rust those old BMW, the floor my be nonexistent.

This seems as good excuse as any to post some more photos of my 1602, I'm working on it at the moment re-doing the sills and painting the inside wheel arches with black underseal, anything to try and stop it rusting more!.

I'm a 2002 and E21 man myself, have always liked them.Apparently an old friend of mine (I havent seen him for years but old friend nevertheless) has about ten old Beemers in various states of disrepair at his yard including a three series touring "half way" through a V12 transplant apparently. I suspect half way means the original engine is lying in an oily pool in his shed whilst the V12 is still languishing in a 750 that hasnt moved for three years. I really must make the effort to call him and go and get some pics.

Nice E23, can't remember seeing one on the road for a good long time. I remember reading in a late-70s Observers Book of Cars that they had seats 'tuned' to the car's suspension, and always wondered what that meant.

I think E21s are the first BMWs I recall when I was a nipper, they looked dead mean and space-age compared with the familiar Escorts and Maxis. I used to like to see them sporting a nice 'BMW' tailblazer 8)

From my BMW days, 520i and M535i. The 520i was lovely, but the M535i was lazy and prefered to cover the miles on an AA beavertail.

The glass for those tourings is made from unobtanium too so I understand. Worth it just for that I imagine.

Slightly tangentially, one thing I've never understood is why Alpina is so highly-rated yet almost no-one outside of hardcore BMW nutters has ever heard of Racing Dynamics - an Italian outfit which specialises in the same sort of go-fast tuning for Bavarian metal. I originally heard about them via this:

It's called a K55 and aside from the 18" rims and serious stance it looks like a boggo Compact, right? And it is, if you exclude the minor matter of a bored-out 5.5-litre V12 from the 850 under the bonnet.

Also, since RD have never let a car out from their factory without at least an extra hundred horsepower than when it entered, output is hiked from the stock 326bhp to, er, 427bhp and 404 lb ft.

Always thought it would be quite fun to have a go in one of these.

I love big Alpina wheels. I suspect that's probably a crime in here, but buggrit.

I'm not up on my E numbers but I like the style of 70s BMWs and I could be persuaded to drive around in a pre-Bangle 5 series. I've driven an "Estate Agent" 318i and it would have been a lovely car to drive if I'd been a foot and a half shorter. It wasn't just the usual space issues, I'm used to that, but everything was angled to suit a much shorter driver.

That 728 is a real shame, thats a very elegant 4 door saloon. And that one looks to have been a real cracker.Interestingly i know of another one of these in an abandoned scrapyard in Pencoedcae in south wales, its a slightly later 81 'X' 728i but still has the chrome bumpers and wing mirrors etc, but the interior is more modern and it has electric windows all round and a manual sunroof. Unfortunately it is way beyond saving

I agree. E39s are lovely :D

I like loads of them, from the 'Neue Klasse' saloons, through to a decently spec'd E46 any would be welcome at my house.

I adore E30's. In fact the only car I regret selling was an immaculate g plate example which never even lasted another year after I sold it (for half its value to a friend 'cos he loved it). I WILL buy another soon, in black, with two doors.I miss it more than any ex girlfriend!

Coming home from Manchester just now I passed an E7 3.0 CS on the M62. Funny, as I was saying how much I love the E3 3.3Li 20 minutes earlier. I think the bloke driving thought I was quite possibly deranged as I almost circled it to get better looks, was grinning like a wanking chimp, and kept giving him the thumbs up.

It was lovely.

I know it'd be criminal, but I'd really like a set of big Alpina rims for my 318 identical to the ones in your top pic, Pog. Need to sort out the bodywork first.

I think a set of those, front fogs and rear headrests would complete it.

I also have to say, I prefer driving the E36 318is to my old 325i Touring. Seems a lot sharper, response wise.

The only photo I can find of my 528i,sorry about the wheels but it was in the '90s

I love the E21 3 series. Such a simple design, but a really good one. I cant decide whether I like the front end or rear more though. I also am a very big fan of the E24 6 series, which always looked incredibly like a shark to me.

I adore these.Unfortunately, they adore rusting.

I like those too, and generally I dislike BMWs. With a few exceptions, how much a car appeals to me has an inversely proportional relationship with the quality of its rustproofing. I wish I could do bodywork.

Probably because the Racing Dynamics brand got diluted and they became better known for nasty chrome stick-on shit before going bust but yes you are right, they did do some nice cars.
