Yesterday started like this:

20210629_165251.thumb.jpg.95cacb15022300ab8e2c63ae2f263bd7.jpg

I decided to take a look at the "repair" to the left rear quarter, as from inside there was less of the original metal left.

20210629_165826.thumb.jpg.1348f34e630dba0bed92b13a99442de8.jpg

I uncovered the seam where the new metal had been added. Very strange, right on the top of the swage, but looking inside showed the swage was still there underneath.

20210629_170350.thumb.jpg.96677a389637a507e38f822918d16a0b.jpg

Couple of pounds of filler on the floor and the whole seam is available to view. Tack welded on.

20210629_171154.thumb.jpg.475141e18917aa473691bda0a975fe09.jpg

Zip, clatter.

20210629_172129.thumb.jpg.66b8388aafeb95f17850f5f136d1e7be.jpg

Cleaned up a little, you can see the original coachline of the car, albeit wavy. Much better. Worse, but better.

20210629_173400.thumb.jpg.5174af9661d1593ab631eca505ae6113.jpg

The whole back end of the car was filler as I worked my way up.

20210629_173559.thumb.jpg.3858267fa85b1294ade7e87061796ae4.jpg

Really quite thick, too.

20210629_174208.thumb.jpg.13996ab3a44709c16ff2ac370d9f41b0.jpg

It continued, in geological looking strata.

20210629_175446.thumb.jpg.06c40dd82b428df6a35a659ac5f7cb35.jpg

That's as far as I got, ran out of time and my angle grinder was getting too hot to hold.

20210629_175950.thumb.jpg.3d12e3d194645866f924cf0a376fcd61.jpg

Sprayed a bit of gloss on, and that shows the story of the panel.

Best I can come up with is someone put a ratchet strap all the way around the back too tightly and dented it all to hell.

That's going to be fun to bring back to shape. I'll carry on pulling the Bondo out before I start on that...

You’ll massively improve the cars gas mileage too if you keep grinding out all that plop! The thickness and sheer amount of filler must be adding an awful lot of weight!

It’s similar to what I found on my Capri, someone had replaced the rear arches way back whenever but instead of cutting the old ones off and seam welding new ones in they just cut the old rotten edges back then put the new arches over the top and tack welded them in place (lap jointed!) then plastered the rear quarters in filler to hide the joint. The thickness of the filler in places was incredible. How it didn’t just fall off under its own weight I don’t know!

Anyway, keep it up. It’ll be a great car once your done.

So far I've pulled about 30 lbs from the back of the car- old metal, new metal, overlaid new metal; quite a lot of filler too as you say.

I'm going to offset that by installing sound deadening, however at least that weight serves a functional purpose.

Not so much Plymouth Fury as Plymouth Pudding. 😁

I don't know if you're planning to upgrade, but flux core MiG isn't the easier thing to get nice welds with. Normal wire and argon or argon/co2 mix is much better, especially working indoors. The cored stuff is ok for welding bits of angle iron outside and that's about it

This Plymouth’s going to be getting 30 mpg by the time you have finished all this filler removal!

Just wanted to practice with flux core to get back into the hang of it. Mostly because I don't have any gas right now and the thing cane with a reel of wire and I had another spool from my neighbor.

Had a go at getting the overall profile correct, with hammers.

At bodyshop rates that was about $70 of work to get to the point where it's just about ready for a light skim of filler to take up the dimples.

Wow, you got a lot done in 15 minutes!

Yup. They spent much more time troweling on the filler than they would have just hammering it straighter.

28 degrees in the garage and the oppressive humidity from a thunderstorm starting to roll in. What better time to fire up a 1.5kW heat gun in an enclosed space and lean upside down with a scraper?

20210702_212531.thumb.jpg.ff6ddf521646f23efc323a6c26160954.jpg

Got this far before sacking it off as a bad idea. I need a smaller blade to remove the tar in the crease, I can't get the right angle with this one.

Then, I can clean it up and the dolly will work better instead of being cushioned.

Actually no. Because it's got a fair bit of Mercedes underneath they handle remarkably well for how big they are.

As for 303hp.. it's a nice engine and it sounds good. Smooth, reliable. Just doesn't suit the car.

Drive down and you can take mine for a spin.

That's just cladding, non structural. They hide 3" steel tube that is the support for the roof.

Overall profile is much closer to what it should be. Now comes the finesse to remove the wrinkles and waves.
