Joey spud Posted October 18, 2020 Author Posted October 18, 2020 I pulled the front panel off earlier thinking it would stop me removing the wings,it didn't and without it fitted the radiator is free to get intimate with the cooling fan so i loosely bolted it back on. The wings are held with a handful of bolts scattered around their perimeter which all came undone with little drama. Once they were off the full extent of the A post and floor/end of sill rot was futher exposed. Passenger grot. Drivers grot. This side the rot has eaten into the base of the A post causing movement and problems with shutting the dropped door. Anyone recognise these brakes, Midget or Marina ? I also need a bottom arm as i don't think its ment to have a big rusty hole in it. So it's definitely narrower than standard now and after a bit of rearrangement it's in pole position to go up the side of the house. danthecapriman, 500tops, CGSB and 16 others 19
High Jetter Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 It might bluster a lot, but you can probably squeeze it through the gap
Joey spud Posted October 24, 2020 Author Posted October 24, 2020 So today was the day. Shrubs were dug up.. 18mm ply board was laid.. Tyre's were inflated.. What could possibly go wrong.. Well it looked like it was all systems go until i got about two car lengths from freedom (garden) when the tyres got wedged against the house wall and the fence's fixing blocks. Not happy doesn't come close to covering it. BlankFrank, Banger Kenny, beko1987 and 1 other 4
SiC Posted October 24, 2020 Posted October 24, 2020 Would stock tyres be a fair bit narrower? egg, Banger Kenny and Joey spud 3

Dick Cheeseburger Posted October 24, 2020 Posted October 24, 2020 ^ This. Standard steels/tyre setup are Kate Moss-esque compared to your Wellers. Joey spud 1
Joey spud Posted October 24, 2020 Author Posted October 24, 2020 Yes i think if i can get hold of a cheap set of standard 4j rims with 145 or 155x14 tyres fitted instead of my oh so manly 185/70 x13's i might give me just enough wiggle room. Man maths in action. 155 vs 185 = 30mm x2 (aka 2+ inches) which should be winner, winner chicken dinner. Christine, Squirrel2, egg and 1 other 4
Dick Cheeseburger Posted October 24, 2020 Posted October 24, 2020 Alternatively you could gently chip away a few mm from the lower edge of your house with a kango/hammer drill? May take a while though. I'm not an engineer, but I'd have thought it'll be alright. Banger Kenny, NorthernMonkey, Shite Ron and 4 others 7
Joey spud Posted October 24, 2020 Author Posted October 24, 2020 Pissed off really doesn't cover it. I need an inch at the very most to get through. I am currently sulking down at my local village Institute. I was watching the footy but its been interrupted by two bints singing along to a backing track (aka entertainment) so i am now sulking x100% I think if i can aquire some cheap standard wheels it'll just clear. I mean who builds a house that doesn't allow enough room for a moggy to slip down its side access ? Edit. They are now murdering Abba. Vince70, Twiggy, egg and 1 other 4
High Jetter Posted October 24, 2020 Posted October 24, 2020 Can you borrow a couple of pallet trucks? Banger Kenny 1
lesapandre Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 Pallets - put some small wheels under a couple of pallets and get these under the car front and back and push it down the alley with wheels removed? Banger Kenny 1
Joey spud Posted October 25, 2020 Author Posted October 25, 2020 16 hours ago, Christine said: turn the wheels around I have just tried this and it increases the track, nice idea though.. On the rear i could clamp the brake hose and remove the brake drums then bolt the wheels directly to the half shafts i think that would give me about half an inch.
Asimo Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 I would make disc wheels from plywood. About 12'' diameter would do. Don't use too much power though. Dick Cheeseburger, bunglebus and beko1987 3

Years back there was another bungalow next to mine on a massive plot (old pear orchard) but a developer bought it and wanted to put four 3 storey town houses on the plot which ment he had to excavate down and remove shit loads of clay to get the town houses roof height to match the other properties in the road.

Wow, surprised they bothered. Opposite us the trick was build it higher than approved by planning and then say sorry and get retrospective permission. Joey spud 1

My bungalow has a fuck off big extension on the back of it that was unfinished internally when we bought the place. When i finished all the plumbing and wiring and asked the building inspector to come round and sign everything off it turned out the extension was actually 20% bigger than what had been previously been approved. Oh how we laughed.. Luckily it did get passed once we resubmitted the amendments but it was serious squeaky bum time for a while. Tickman 1
Joey spud Posted October 25, 2020 Author Posted October 25, 2020 I was reading RobT's Morris thread the other day and there was a link to Moss's website and while having a nose around i spotted that they were offering parts catalogues for the various old tat that they cover for absolutely nothing so i ordered up a Moggy one. And true to their word it turned up yesterday and it is a mighty fine piece of literature. How good is that. I have joined a few Minor Facebook groups and asked on one if someone could possibly measure the track of a Moggy on standard wheels for me. One chap got back to me with a measurement of 57 inches meaning if i can find some cheap wheels i should be able to get Boris up the garden and to the shed after all. egg, RobT, Banger Kenny and 2 others 5

They're expensive but its super handy to be able to grab a little part for my MGB and not have to pay postage. Shame they moved out of the city centre in Bristol, as I could potter down there at a lunch time and pick up what I needed. Quite weird to be able to pick up pretty much anything I need much easier than I can on my moderns with Euros/GSF/etc. Also makes them super easy classics to own. I know some enjoy the hunt for parts on a rare car and thats part of the hobby. For me, thats just a source of frustration and often more expense if parts are hard to comeby. Those catalogues are excellent for part references. Likewise their website too, which I've used loads of time on my phone for bits. I've always wondered how Moss and others keep going when I used to see the shop in the centre. After owning a Classic, I found out why! Not only classics are needy, many modern parts are shit quality... 😂 We also have the Charles Ware in Bristol too. So I really ought to give a Morris Minor a go sometime. For me it would have to be in Traveller flavour as I prefer the utilitarian factor to them. Also one of the few classic cars that gets a thumbs up from my wife too. Just a shame they are quite expensive. 🙁 Maybe my next project after the Dolomite... (Because one needing work is all I can afford!) Joey spud 1
Christine Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 What is a Morris wheel p c d ? I have a spare 4x of these , (4" pcd ) you can borrow for an age . I wannem back ultimately though .. the drum recess is 6 "dia .. I guess a morris is 7" !!! The sump and diff might drag on the ground too ? but they are narrow .. LoL I can leave them at a place on Bluebell Hill if they'll do .... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-Of-Trailer-Wheels-and-Tyres-480-400-x-8-4-PCD-4-Ply-grease-nipple-cut-out/203105942451?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20180105095853%26meid%3Dc6635951b618451ca84fed457a43acef%26pid%3D100903%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D20%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D203105942451%26itm%3D203105942451%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2510209&_trksid=p2510209.c100903.m5276 Joey spud 1

But all is not lost as my better half reminded me earlier that her Uncle Albert owns a '64 Traveller that is currently laid up for winter under a car port down the side of his house in nearby Wigmore. The trouble with ''Uncle A'' is he also has a Triumph Stag in his garage that he drove in there ok but then when he came to reverse it back out in the spring the clutch woundn't disengage (i'm guessing the clutch plate has rusted to the flywheel) and then his son had a go at getting it out and now it's jammed in reverse gear too. Everytime i see him at family events he retells the Stag story and i always offer to come over and have a look so i guess if i want to use his rims i am going to have to have a look at the crippled Triumph.
Joey spud Posted October 31, 2020 Author Posted October 31, 2020 Weekly update. Firstly mega thanks to Christine of this parish who not only gifted me a copy of Lindsey Porter's Moggy restoration Bible but for added extra win also included was a Minor filled copy of Practical Classics and a Motor mag with an early Subaru road test feature. So as far as getting Boris up the garden goes i am collecting a set of 3.5j wheels tomorrow and if it ever stops fecking raining i will once again try to get up the garden. I was going to scrap this rear wing and look for a better one but while i am waiting for the weather and wheels situation to align i had a bash at repairing what i had. So i cut the worst of the grottiness out.. And tacked a bit of a bit of rough Zintec in. To be honest i am just playing about and hoping i can find a good replacement wing locally.
