my first car was a 1972 mk3 cortina in 1979 

I'd had it about a month , stopped at a roundabout , woman chatting to her friend  in  2CV didn't , she hit the back of it but because the 2cv is low it went under the bumper into the rear valance which was mostly a pile of brown dust on the road .

They must've been rusty before they put the paint on.

A neighbour worked for ford at Dagenham in the 60s , he said he used to drive past the vauxhall factory and see the metal sheets stored outside in open sheds , it was rusty before they'd even pressed it
