The Herald is sickly again and I've got totally fed up with putting Triumph engines in it so its getting a more modern swap. While I do that we're going to need something else for Mrs Seth to commute to work in. We're on the lookout for something cheap that will either hold its minimal value or really cheap that we could afford to throw away if need be. There was a Datsun 100A at the RR show that was extremely tempting and looked like it might be a giggle to own for a bit. But then Mrs Seth has a family affinity for old Volvos and found an ad for a cheap Torslander 240 earlier... Anyone trying to move something on or know of anything?

Fair enough Seth, thought I would mention it. I know what you mean about the 80s  . How about a nice Mk3 escort?

That M-reg Rover Metro looks suspiciously like an N-reg Rover 100

 You are right, well I can read a number plate but it said M Reg Rover Metro in the OSF ad!

What engine are you thinking of fitting in the Herald?

That's what I was wondering, I'd always thought that the old Standard/Triumph 4 pot's were good engines......

We did 50,000 miles or so on the 1200 engine that came in the car. Not long ago I fitted the third 1500 engine in the following 50,000 miles. One of those had only done a couple of thousand before we got it and about 20k later melted a piston. It is going to be cheaper to fit something more modern and altogether different than to re-build a 1500 lump.I've been umming and ahhing about all kinds of possibilites and have come to the conclusion that it seems a ridiculous amount of effort (and expense) to turn a FWD engine round when there are RWD options. I've settled on MX5 engine and box as the layout is right (rear sump etc), it looks quite old fashioned (I will fit it with a pair of SUs...) and they are the next MGB so numerous and spares are always likely to be available. Also it will put out perhaps a little more power than a 2 litre vitesse so won't make the car an uncontrollable handful while still making it quick and fun.

It's a shame the 1500 wears out so easily, it's perfect for the Herald. Still, an MX5 engine and box sounds like it would make a superb car.

I'm sick of the sight of Triumph engines. My 1300 needs pulling out again because the big end is still knocking slightly and while I was investigating underneath I snapped one of the (brand new) conrod bolts

I think those MX5 engines are going to be the way forward for many people. The 1.8 version in our 323F was a cracker. In a Herald I imagine the 1.6 would be more than adequate. You could even end up with a 6-speed 'box!

Good choice, I would imagine a Herald with MX5 power to be a very appealing proposition. Ma Lobster has an MX5 and I have to say that I'm very impressed. I'd love one myself but have no practical need / use for one...

I guess modern RWD engine/transmission combos are a bit thin on the ground. Really all you have is Mazda and BMWThose MX5 engines are a cracker, simple, robust and plentiful.Guess alternatives would be maybe a BMW 1.6/1.8, or maybe a 1.6 from a Suzuki Vitara or something without the transferbox.Audi's have an inline motor still don't they?Although I recon you've made the right choice with the mazzer.orWin the lotto and buy an AE86 Corolla to break, that'd piss the driftmonkeys off

I was a little afraid some shiters would slate me for ruining an old car so I'm glad you seem to like the idea! I asked about BMW engines on R-R but I'm not sure one would suit really. They're also all on the slant which might make things trickier though you can fit a Dolly sprint lump in if you try hard enough. There was on at the RR gathering with a rotary lump and Mrs Seth tried it for size as the gearbox is apparently the same. The gear lever was a bit far back but I think he'd mounted the engine quite a long way back to clear the chassis crossmember. With the MX5 engine I'm just hoping it isn't too tall as I really don't want to cut the bonnet.Anyway, going to have a look over the Torsten free-be tomorrow evening with its previous incumbent

MX5 motor is far too nice for a Herald...Perkins did something about right.(If it was mine, I'd be putting a Rover V8 in)

Thanks NB, don't really want something that needs fixing as I've got enough of that to do already!Pete, Rover V8 for similar power from more than twice the cc and much more "packing" issues?!

I reckon the 1.6 high-output engine would be ace, they're super-revvy and sound great.

Yeah... No substitute for cc's man. Stop being vegetarian and chuck a V8 in ;-)The MX5 lump is a good motor, but I'd keep it injected.

You're nearly right. I am going to have to pay some bloody car tax for the first time in years though!
