Search indexing again? All the feeds are empty..

Posted

Hi, it's there a guide on how to display photos in post? I can display all photos at the end but I do not know how to display them at intervals.

No and yes. I guess it's been stable too long before something becomes needy again. Forum software decided to gobble up all the search server storage by tripling it's normal usage. Then it fell over.

Nuked the database indices on the filesystem - which I'm surprised it worked without it throwing a tizzy. Then force rebuilt the indexes last night. Should be back to normal by now.

After you have uploaded a photo, it will appear in the 'Drag files here' section below the text in the text editor. Click in the text of your post where you want that photo to appear. The flashing cursor will become visible there.

Then click on the photo in the 'Drag files here' section. That photo will be placed at the location of the cursor.

As an example, here is a photo of my 1994 Cadillac Eldorado Touring Coupe, positioned here:

Any photos you have uploaded but haven't placed within the text will get published in a set of images at the end of the post, instead.

This may well be what has happened in your posts so far.

Give it a try and see how you get on.

FFS 😩

Might just rebuild and update the elasticsearch container so it's all fresh.

Hopefully they'll fix some of this buggy shite in the version 5 thats coming soon. But how much do we want to bet it's even more buggy...

Just rebuilt it all and the search is indexing now. I think on the current setup it takes about an hour or two to finish indexing.

Pretty sure trying to use a terminal on a phone is triggering my RSI. 🫣

Thanks boss.

Time to write a small shell script?

Posted

The docker containers for elastic search are all shell scripts to regenerate passwords, etc. Just needs a bit of editing if I'm up-reving. A tad fiddly on a small screen to type the names in.

Topics has finished (pretty quick) so "Content I Have Started" should work again. Indexing posts (for search) takes longer and that'll hopefully be done in an hour or so.

Anyone else having trouble uploading new posts?

Yep.  Just had a post time out while replying to the Computershite thread, and when I refreshed there were four copies of my reply there.

Edit: That reply took a full minute to save too - seems like some process has decided to eat all the server resources again.

Edit: b0ut if you refresh straight away the post should be there

Search server papped itself yesterday again by gobbling all the disk space and probably what you were seeing. I think it's trying to update the search server but that is failing due to no storage space. It keeps retrying and then gives up eventually, which is why it seems slow.

I did a reset and upped the storage a bit. Hopefully will be enough to keep it happy. I don't want up too much as excess space is costing money for something that isn't used.

It seems to sit around the 12GB usage and randomly doubles in size for a few minutes then drops back down. So while it doesn't use much of the space most of the time, there needs to be enough for when the forum software sends things a bit crazy for a few minutes on occasions. It's not a lot of money (something like a couple of cents per day) but just can't go unnecessarily crazy.

🤞It'll behave itself again. Let me know (@ mention me if necessary on here) and I'll have another look. As every post is indexed I think it's just slightly at the point where disk space needed increasing to keep things stable. We tend to have an uptick of activity on here this time of year probably because people are bored and rather be chatting on here than chatting to their family 😂

When Version 5 of the forum is released, I think I might go for a server rebuild on dedicated storage to cut costs and vastly increase storage spaces.

Just noticed that as a thread starter one can not delete the thread any longer.

Thats new.

It shouldn't be new! According to the settings, it should be possible.

Because I can't find delete anywhere anymore, but maybe I'm stupid, it's happened before and I can't find it.

Yes. It keeps randomly resetting itself. Bizarre. Literally no updates or settings changes.

Saw the message about the shutdown - @SiC thanks for the work you do behind the scenes to keep this place going. 👍

For the most part it doesn't really need much attention nowadays! Every few weeks I log onto the server to check if any updates need to go on (security updates are applied automatically), if it needs a restart, free disk space levels and that the backups are still working fine.

There is going to be a big forum software update where it goes from version 4 to version 5 at some point in the near future. A bit of work will need to be done for that to migrate across. Hopefully not going to be too much of a pain. Also tempted at that point to rebuild the server onto a (much) cheaper dedicated server setup too.

As ever grateful for the work you do and the explanations of what you've done that even Luddites like me can (usually) understand.

Did someone once post a shortcut for how to access media you've uploaded to the forum? @Talbot I think it was you but I can't find it now. I'm trying to find some pictures which I took with a phone that is now goosed and aren't backed up anywhere. Cheers.

It's been a while, but apparently the bug which makes the editor occasionally eat your post while you're typing it is still with us.  I only *nearly* hurled the phone through the window when this happened.
