Not noticed it on any other recent joiners though, for a good while.

What email provider do you use? Hotmail or Outlook? There is a known issue where the MS servers are rejecting emails from the IP address range this server is on.

Im investigating ways on how we can get around this without spending money. I've cut back on some of the hosting cost already as the last few months bills have been astronomical and I don't want it to start racking up again.

And suddenly, we're baaaack.

Has Hotmail been whitelisted again? Or did you pull a magic lever?

Cheers either way ðŸ¥‡

I'm putting Hotmail/outlook/apple emails through a third party email service. I did it previously but there was one email address that a regular on here had that no longer worked. As they had a lot of notifications turned on, this caused the server to constantly contact the Hotmail servers. But that server kept seeing it as a dead address and blacklisted the primary email server for the whole of Hotmail.

When I did it previously through the third party, that third party then cut it off from us quite quickly as that dead email address was risking them being blacklisted. That email address is now changed (user has been told too) to prevent this. I got the third party to reinstate the service and last night I switched it back on again.

For now I need to keep a close eye on rejected/dead email addresses on these providers. Because it's been dead for quite a while, there is a good chance there will be others.

TL;DR they work again now and I'll try keeping it that way, but due to the providers being a pain, they may well stop working again in the future.

Is the search function borked again?

I've posted as one of the things that has changed in an update here:

Basically I've plugged in a new search system that should hopefully improve it longer term. It'll need time (hours) to go through all the content and re-index it all. Hopefully should be done by the morning.

Currently this new system is a proof of concept. If it all works well, I'll move it to a beefier setup and it'll need to reindex again. Will be a few days before I do that unless things go drastically wrong.

Yeah I'm getting it too. I see the logs as I'm logged in as a administrator.

Appears to be the search system that is causing the fault. My suspicion is that the search server isn't able to take the load up of both users and indexing.

I can't do anything right now as I'm commuting into work but I may flick back across to the old search method. Problem is, everytime you change method, it rebuilds the search indexes from scratch. So prolongs how long search is broken for.

I think there may need to be a greater question on where we go on this - probably a poll. Do we want great search but additional cost, functioning search restricted to a year (or so) or full search for as it was on the old system but may fail on certain search phrases.

I've always used Google search to find stuff in forums as the search on all of them is shit.

No reason for here to be better!

Only issue with Google search is that it'll only index the parts it can see. So everything else except main board won't be searchable. So ask a shitter and modern shite won't come up - which have quite a lot of useful content in.

But yeah I think this is a subject for a wider debate on its own thread.

There's definitely something up with the indexing results, getting the same thread showing up twice when you use filters rather than directly browsing the forums, e.g.

Posted an update here:

Basically made a few changes in the last half hour that should hopefully stop that happening. If it doesn't, let me know and I'll flip the switch to go back to the old system.

Sorry for anyone that has found the error popping up a lot today. I've made a number of changes to the setup to get a stable and efficient setup.

Written more here:

The short of it is that it should now be stable but the search index is rebuilding. So it may be another day or two before thats fully up to speed again and covering all the 2862231 posts (as of writing) that are on this forum.

Anyone else getting the forum "hanging" for 15-20 seconds or so every now and then?

I seem to get it a couple of times a day. It's a recent thing I think, I've only noticed it over the last month.

Doesn't seem to be caused by anything specific it just hangs when trying to navigate (could be between pages, between threads, returning to home page etc) and sometimes will display "loading" like below, but often doesn't and the browser just waits.

Sorry, only just seen your post here and must have missed it.

Are you still finding it hanging?

I've also found that the larger thread (e.g. n24) can take a few seconds to load but I don't find its tens of seconds. Hopefully the new search backend will help on this as each thread flogs the search system when accessing (I think the Similar Content bit) and also posting (updating indexes). Let me know how you've (and anyone else) found site responsiveness the last few days.

There is another forum update due to be installed which may have a performance difference - hopefully better!

Where abouts do you access those filters on the forum? I seem to remember playing around with it ages (years) ago but I am blowed if I can find it. The search index has been rebuilt fully from scratch since then, so it may have hopefully fixed it.

Just hit Unread content then play around with the filters at the top.

It's working properly now though!

The new "agree" reaction is a nice addition, I was wondering if such a thing could be added as sometimes the "like" reaction doesn't do justice to the fact you're specifically agreeing rather than "liking" the content posted.

As you were.... I'm sure there have been far more significant changes behind the scenes. On my part, efforts much appreciated

Posted

An 'agree' reaction is ok but where's the 'like' gone?   If I 'like' music posted in the stereo lounge thread or someone's incredible welding skills in the main forum, 'agree' does not seem to fit.  Oh.  I've discovered that the +1 has significance and 'like' is hiding behind a keystroke.   I can therefore carry on liking 😀.

It's a bit confusing but clicking on the grey heart brings up the menu. Then the grey heart becomes a blue heart which is the like.

Have one today which has been being consistently annoying, but I suspect simply can be chalked up to "the editor being a pain in the proverbial rear" rather than anything we can do anything about.

The edit function is flat out refusing to work on my phone.  It won't let me actually type anything.  It will let me copy/paste text into the editor window, but I then can't actually DO anything with it.  I've had this happen before after trying to add username tags or embedding links before, but this is the first time it's seemed to affect the editor without having used any of these features.

Kiwi Browser 112.0.5615.137 - Which I believe is Chrome based.  Android 10 I *think* though Huawei have made it bloody difficult to actually find that information as the Android version isn't actually listed anywhere in the About Phone section...EMUI 12 though, which I'm pretty sure is Android 10 based.

Not expecting any resolution to this - just documenting it really in case anyone else runs into the same issue.

Have you tried clearing cache and all that? Sometimes I've found I have to reload the page and I get the clear editor button to zap and try again. It's usually the mentions and emojis for me that royally screw it up.

The editor is utter garbage. I've never liked it. It's why I still have tapatalk as that's useful to go in and fix broken stuff that the editor refuses to touch.

I might look at turning on the manual HTML edit option on the editor so at least it's possible to try fixing what you've written when it fucks up. I suspect if you can run extensions (e.g. Firefox Mobile), you can disable the editor entirely with greasemonkey or even an adblocker on the associated scripts.

Irony is that the CKEditor version of the editor IPB use is now out of support. Quite a few people have been counting down the days when it should be replaced by IPB. But it's never come.

Hopefully when they release version 5 of IPB they might actually make a concerted effort to find a decent editor. They seem flat out refusing to still have manual BBCode. Btw you can use BBCode in here and it'll convert it work. Problem is that it stores everything as HTML and doesn't convert back.

This is a fun new kind of aesthetic

Maybe the third party email work-around filters it through 1995?

I have no idea why they've suddenly decided to mangle the emails like that, but I would like all AS emails to be like that 🤣

I can only guess that a style sheet isn't being downloaded correctly or stripped from the email. I know on the email status console they've upgraded to give a bit more information on bounce backs and such. Presumably they've done a new release of software that tries to be more clever but broken stuff.

A friend of mine has attempted to sign up, although apparently when he received the confirmation email there was no confirmation link to click. Can any admins assist here? I asked if it was just his email disabling hyperlinks, and he doesn't seem to think so.
