OSF spot worthy of its own thread?

Don't know if wny of you have seen this car before but I thought it worthy of its own thread. Regardless of what any of us might think about the scene tax on Mk2 Escorts and other associated cliches, there's no denying it's a stunning machine. One you'd be frightened to drive anywhere mind, but a fabulous work of art nevertheless.

Any thoughts?

I quite like mk2 escorts, but this car is now useless as a car. Its a liability to own. I'm surprised the owner left it exposed to the elements.....

Lovly !Always been a BIG BIG fan of Ford Escort mk2's Its been my Favourite car sine i was a fetus

Yes-I wish it was a 1100 popular plus

I actually don't mind that at all. At least it's original and un-buggered-about-with. I've always thought the whole concourse polishing-the-screenwash-pump-with-a-toothbrush thing was a bit sad, but that applies just as much to the Duesenberg SSJ at Pebble Beach as it does to this so I'm not going to slag it off for being concours.

I'd love to see that driven around a track, driven to work and back home on salty winter roads, or crashed into a wall. I assume Ford has a stock of old cars, it's just as sad to see a wrecked one, this is pointless! I bet he has a sign saying 'do not touch' on it. A pristine 'concours' supercar? Or an old Ford that is only expensive because of the 'scenetax'.There was a grandad owned Opel Ascona on mk1oc (Astra mk1 forum) that was -pristine- (inside the arches were spotless) and it went for 700 quid. That was a much better car in my opinion - where is the justice?

Nice as it is, I agree with Rootes. Be much better (and more interesting IMHO) if it was an 1100 popular plus........

I wonder if that's the one I saw at Holker Hall in about 1990. It was certainly as clean as that and had mirrors underneath.I like it, though the wanky registration spoils it a bit.

I've restored a few cars so I can appreciate the work that's gone into that Escort. It's been taken to an extreme so it's no use as a car now, but if it gives the owner pleasure it's obviously perfect for him.The weirdo

I really like that, at a time when people are scrapping cars of interest left right and centre, its nice to see someone (no matter how anally) taking pride in their car.It just better stay this way.

I agree with alot of the comments above-its a lovely car but also sad in a way that a car built to be enjoyed is no longer used for its intended purpose and has become just another trailer show queen.Get in it man and drive the bloody thing...sideways.

I've got to agree, It's a stunning example of one of my favorite cars of all time but i can't see the fun in owning it and not driving it and enjoying it, just seems pointless to me.I'm just hoping my bmw will suddenly popular and get slapped with scene tax, but i doubt it though.

The front corner bumpers aren't mounted straight, and the offside tail lamp cluster lens appears to be cracked around the outer lower mounting screw. Not that I'm jealous or owt...........

The poor thing! You can see its asking to be floored round that expertly mowed field!(each to their own and all that!)

I stand by my comment-it would be better to see a more humble model than that. That may have been a labour of love or a ££££'sss for later sale restoration. I would love to see a Maxi or Renault 14 like that though.

i agree with rootes to the extent it would be nicer to see alot more, how do i put it, lesser models to this condition. That marina which trigger spotted recently is a case in point, now that is a beaut.

I think it's gorgeous. I had an RS2000 that was almost that clean back in 1992. I spent at least one evening a week just cleaning the thing but I did 25000 miles in it in 4 months. It was perfect.Hopefully in a few weeks I'll be bringing my 1300 Sport back from Czech and it'll be damn nice when it's done. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a chequebook job as I've not got time or the equipment to do everything myself at the moment. I've worked on it pretty much non-stop for 4 days (and my mate has put 100 hours into it so far), and I've got another week of working on it before I bring it home, but there's unfortunately a limit to the amount of time / money I can afford to give it. It's getting another 80-100 hours work before it comes here. However, if I find something like an RS2000 then I can spend twice as much time and money on it because it's more sought after (yes, that means valuable). The 1300 Sport is straight, not messed with, and rare. So it's worth doing. Doing a restoration on an 1100 Pop is the same amount of work, but in the end it'd be worth less and it'd only end up being gutted for a rally car / Pinto transplant anyway. I wouldn't restore an 1100 Pop because I don't want to own one, and if I had the straightest, tidiest, most rust free 1100 Pop in the world I'd be chucking a Pinto lump and RS running gear / interior in it. It's taken me a lot of effort to resist dropping a 2.0 in the 1300 Sport, but it being a Sport has managed to convince me it's worth keeping 'factory'. I know it's the autoshite way to fight for the under-dog, but I would have dropped a 2.0 into a 1100 in 1988 and nothing has changed, I'd do the same now. I don't like base-spec cars.

If he's going concours, then the numberplates are glaringly wrong. Also are those side repeaters original equipment, right up there on the leading edge of the wing?Had he not gone anal with it, I'd be spaffing all over it but it's sadly undrivable for fear of a stonechip to the diff or a shock absorber getting dirty. It is truely a lovely car though.

^ That Ascona is lovely, and what a bargain it was too!

What's wrong with the plates? You could get those plastic lettered plates before and after that car's existence, my aunt's MK3 Escort had a set.The Ford scene tax thing is a funny one - on one hand I like how it has essentially "saved" a load of everyman cars, on the other I don't like how it has taken them out of reach of the same people.

That Ascona is lovely, and you would be able to use it with a lot less worry than the Escort.Would the bottom of the Escort originally be white though? The numberplates would be spot on for a 1975ish car I would have thought.

I love the Mk2 escort, but they were built to drive. I couldn't see me ever having a trailer Queen, even if I won the lottery.

Here's that Ascona I was blithering on about (it was £1k):

I saw that at the NEC show last year or the year before, it was a youngish guy who had it and it is indeed beautiful. Still as pictured here then. Lovely car.

I'm sure the underside would've been at least wayoyled/undersealed from the factory, or not? I doubt it would've had a polished stainless steel exhaust system. I don't like the way it's overly-polished, it -needs- a few dings and blemishes, these came as standard from the factory. :(

Posted

Miserable lot! How can you not like that? Its bloody great FFS  I cannot see a reason why anyone who likes cars would have a problem with it.

Now I've looked at on my computer screen rather than my mobile i can see how nice it is, Must be stepping back to a Ford RS Specialists showroom era 1980 although strangely it's listed on the askmid and DVLA site as a RS2000 with 1993cc engine?.I'd still be to scared to use it in case it get hit by a stone or gets dirty though.
