Threw me too but I found an old 'Ford Cars' online and Ford did call the early Capri IIs L, XL, etc before changing to L, GL, and so on in mid 1975. The trigger to tidy things up may have been the launch of the Escort Mk 2 which used L, GL, and so forth rather than the Mk 1's  L, XL....
