I grew up on the south coast of England and these seemed to be exclusively driven by rich very old ladies with purple rinses.

Does anyone else have the same connotations with mk1 MR2s? Was it the same in affluent areas elsewhere in the country? Mrs Barrington-Smythe, driving her two tone MR2 to the shops with her red terry towling safari suit and alligator handbag.

Yes I would agree, the MK2 was also a popular choice but eventually replaced with the merc slk because Toyota managed to fuck up the mk3 so much.

I had one of these in 2000 and it was the hardest car I ever tried to sell, in dog dick red and wob I had one one phonecall in 3 weeks and still nobody came to look at it. I dropped the price more and more but still developed no interest at all.

I couldn't gel with it although in typical Toyota fashion there was nothing really wrong with it, but it just didn't appeal.

Ended up swapping it for a non running fiesta rs turbo which I made some progress on then decided to move it to a garage where someone I knew with loose lips told a local dodgy twat who subsequently passed this info onto some goons who stole the engine and box out of it.

Local police showed their usual enthusiasm* in dealing with the culprits despite practically taking them to the purpotrators door.

"no evidence m9".

I'd love to give you a "me and my mates went round and duffed them up" style of story but alas with a good job and responsibilities along with continual denials from the scumbags in question plus no real proof, I had to chalk that one up to experience.

I had a loan of a mr2 turbo rev 1 and thought that was a brilliant motor but big balls required for wet weather.

I've been looking a lot ak Mk4 Astras lately, particularly the pov spec ones.

This one is a quite early 1.6 8v CLUB spec which means trims & quite rare wind up front windows, even the mega mingebag 'Envoy' spec soon adopted leccy jobs. Shame its got metallic paint though - 90% of these things are in dismal silvery grey colours. If it was flat white or red I might not be able to resist it!!!!

 That's a horrible colour.

Yeah I love that white Astra, £2000 is too salty for me though!!!

I would agree, 2k is double it's value in my eyes but I suppose its mint and low miles and could be a car for life if you're that way inclined.

More up my street and a few months back now, I saw a lovely black 3dr 2.2 Sri making excellent progress along the M4 by Swindon with a "for sale, 1 owner, 12months mot £995" sign in the back window.

OK not povvo spec but these seem to be maturing nicely now.

Saying that any mk4 that came through Witney auctions got snapped up immediately by an (excuse racist stereotypes) Albanian looking fellow who was there every week buying them. Must have some sort of decent rep then?

How about reddish-bronze?  35K miles. Year's MOT. 9 stamps inc cambelt.  I know the seller and can see the car from my desk.  Looks pretty damn good.  Electric windows though.  He'd take £650 I'm sure.  https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202001306757391?advertising-location=at_cars&sort=distance&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly New&onesearchad=New&radius=1500&make=VAUXHALL&model=ASTRA&postcode=gu511du&page=1 7b0d9c757b2447da81844559b3a1daf0.jpg

If that Mk1 MR2 is genuine and up for £3k I'm fully expecting to see it relisted in a new location for £10k before the end of the month.

Yeah that bronze astra is very nice. 1.4 as well. I remember hiring a brand new 1.4 povo job in about 2003 and thinking 'why am I fucking about with rusty old Alfa 33's? This thing is vastly superior to drive' which was tough to admit to myself.
