They are severely underrated cars, lots of revolutionary at the time engineering for GM.

Unfortunately, whenever you say “Corvair” people immediately reply with “Unsafe at any speed”.

To which I reply that in fact the Corvair is the only car in history to be certified 'safe' by the United States government, after an independent panel investigated the claims against it.

 

They are actually a bit dicey in certain conditions - incredibly vague steering and no weight over the front isn't fun in crosswinds - but on twisty roads they beat any other American car hands down. Sadly, they were very poorly and cheaply built by European standards. Everything is done down to a price, and it does show. I still love them, though.

I very nearly bought one a good few years back, i mmm'd and ahh'd over it, then decided to go for a look, was only 15 miles up the coast, messaged the seller, just sold 10 minutes before my message, wasn't meant to be,

 

Much to my surprise, i saw the car again.

 

James May was driving (and killing) it on Top Gear.
