As a purveyor of quality* used cars, I'd think you'd know the joys of a wire brush and waxoil,

Either that or pop rivets and silicon sealer isn't welding

loving the paintmatch..

worth buying at that and ragging

I've been looking at the later model 197's but I wonder if this shape in 182 form would be better? It's got to be a hell of a lot lighter.

Cambelt are a nightmare on these. A 2l engine squeezed into an engine bay that its more designed for a 1.2l. Also the dephaser needs to be changed when the cambelt is done, otherwise they have a habit of going shortly after, making a diesel noise racket and loosing power+performance. It's critical that the aux belt+tensioner is changed too, as these have a finite life, and when they go they take out the cambelt cover case and cambelt!

Apart from that, usual suspension issues from being a hot hatch - but working on these bits is not too bad. Mostly plastic (including the comedy bendable front wings), and decently rust proofed. Cracking cars to drive. I reckon they'll be a 205 GTi type car in the not so distant future for sure.

This is the former editor of EVO on his Clio Trophy (the stripped out version with posh shocks, etc) nestled amongst his very other nice/expensive rare cars:

Watching that will probably make you want to buy one! The guy is great for actually going through the technical details of the car too, rather than just raving about driving it.

Si.

Anyone know the deal with these dame edna Saab's. Is the engine Gm/Fiat shite? This seems good value even though it's a  bit leggy (although not if it blows up after 4 miles)

Yes it's the Fiat/GM engine. The engine itself is actually very strong, its all the emissions junk strapped to it that is the problem. EGRs clog up - but actually easy to get to remove and also cheap enough now to get replacements to just chuck instead of clean them. If using the correct grade oils (low-SAPS) and not afraid to use the full rev range every so often they don't get that clogged.

If it has a DPF then it'd need a good run every so often to keep it clean + healthy. Intake manifold flap control rods fail, however they are very unlikely to get ingested (unlike the ones on BMWs) - to replace its a big job (fuel pump needs to come off which is on cambelt, etc) however you can get repair kits for the control rods that work well and pretty easy to put on. Turbos don't seem to go as much on the Saabs as on the Vauxhalls, no idea why - maybe the owners tend to look after the cars more and keep to regular oil changes + don't kill the ignition straight after a hard drive?

Other expensive diesel parts (injectors+fuel pump) seem pretty robust and as its used by so many other models there are plenty of cheap s/h parts about for them now too.

Oh and DMF flywheel do go. However it gives you plenty of warning before its completely shot and a lot of people drive round with them failing. Worse case it kills the gearbox. At this age+mileage, its either been replaced with the clutch or making a noise to tell you its on its way out! The noise I find is best described as ball bearings rolling around a metal bin. It can be occurring all the time, or just when the clutch is out or in.

Decent power out of them though and pretty nice powerbands. I also see a lot of these same engines buzzing around the city in Vectras - so they can't be all that awful...

Being a 9-5 and a saloon, its not high on a lot of peoples radars or desirability scale, so depreciation is/has always been pretty bad.
