Thats the 1.6td with a bosch pump. Some turbo playing and max fuel screw should see a bit more bokset. Not to mention it is vegitabaltarian

The 1.6's can run quite  a bit of boost with little effort for lots of smoke and noise.

One of these days I'm going to rip the engine out of one of those to put in a Scirocco, I still want a TD mk2.
