I'm calling bollocks on it (legally) being MOT and tax exempt, unless you can claim agricultural use?

Over 40 years old, so it would be exempt, surely?

That’s been for sale for at least three years, in a non running kind of way .

I was going to say, that's been up forever! The key/immobiliser issue sounds like something that could be impossible to sort given age and complexity, which is a shame because of definitely own that if I had room

As far as I understand it, that applies to (goods) vehicles which weigh 3500kg or less

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5f7eceefe90e07741465559a/v112-declaration-of-exemption-from-mot.pdf

heavy goods vehicles have a different exemption form, and only vehicles built before 1960 are MOT exempt on that

But this is a recovery truck, so if it's only used for recovery, it's MOT-exempt. I assume that's the reference in the ad.

are recovery vehicles MOT exempt? I dont see any category exempting them in the forms above?

Looks like I'm a bit out of date and that rule changed quite a while ago. It's just O-licence exemption now.

Edit: I'm starting to doubt that whole thing now. Am I going mad?

no I dont think your going mad, (well not more then any of us anyhow ) IIRC back in the day Recovery vehicles where MOT exempt but then the rules changed on that, but a lot of people still think it applies (in the same way some people think tax is transferable)

another example is how recovery vehicles could get away with running around on trade-plates, but then in the early to mid 1980's the rules changed, and they all had to be actually road-registers with the DVLC, hence why so many old recovery trucks where/are on Q plates, since aint-no-one got time for a dating letter LOL (and a lot of them where Bitsa's anyhow made up of old WW2 lorry chassis and bus bodies :) )

Sounds about right - I haven't needed to know the ins and outs for years so I haven't kept up to date.

Tachograph and O-licence exemption are perhaps all that remains

Recovery exemptions changed pretty dramatically a few years ago. No more trade plates, no more unregistered vehicles, no more MoT exemptions.

Also, pretty crucially, to be regarded as a recovery vehicle now it needs to be specifically built for recovering broken down vehicles, and not allowed to carry any other load.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guide-for-recovery-operations/running-a-vehicle-recovery-business-driver-and-vehicle-safety-rules

Basically, its few remaining exemptions are only available if you are operating it commercially for the purposes of vehicle recovery. Moving whole cars, from where they have broken down or crashed, to a place of repair, storage or scrappage. Moving a vehicle from A to B for any other purpose is not recovery; picking up a car someone has bought and moving across the country is “carrying goods”, and subject to the same rules regarding driver’s hours, operating licenses and everything else as any other cargo.

Any one of us, buying that Bedford, would have to get it MoT’d to use it , and tax it at the Private HGV rate if we wanted to use it to carry anything. If I understand the regulations correctly, it is possible to use the 40 year free VED option, but if you do so then you can’t carry any load beyond personal items in the cab.

Plenty of opinions out there in internet-land, but the one that counts will be DVSA and the Traffic Commissioner. If you aren’t a registered breakdown contractor operating commercially they’re going to expect a valid MoT and tax at whatever rate they deem appropriate for your use.

Also, the MoT exemption for pre 1960 lorries is only valid if used unladen. If you want to put anything in the back, it needs an MoT.

I actually like the little Jag2 bits bolted onto a Micra, but that looks like Lady Penelopes car wearing Dame Edna Everidges specs.

Seller's description

Car requires new header tank and it's not something I can afford at the moment due to labour costs. Also could probably do with a cambelt if you are fixing it. So selling as spares and repair. It has a few minor niggles which most of these cars do but it's in reasonable nick and does start and drive but will need trailoring away. It does have a decent service history lots from a specialist garage and 2 keys. The wheels were recently refurbished and the tyres are 18 months old and just done 500 miles. Please let me know if you have any questions

He might be attempting to use the test exemption because it's a recovery truck, but even that is bollocks as the only one legitimately MOT exempt are 3501kgs or more and spec lift only and genuine recovery only. Moving your own vehicles, towing stuff to scrap and 'hire and reward' all need an MOT.

Has anyone driven one of these? I have fond memories from NFS Underground, but never had a chance to drive one. I read they aren’t really good.

I had an R/T one and it was pretty good other than the low rent interior .The r/t had a manual box though , not sure what the slush box is like .

I really need to find one to try, and definitely not buy it if I can’t find one to borrow. 🤣

Not a huge fan of these, but an early(ish) Mk1 Focus 3 door must be quite rare now
