So, is that sold then?

Possibly.

BIL wants it but he needs his girlfriend’s approval, which quite frankly sounds crazy to me but such is (his) life.

Update:

The ML started and drove really well on Sunday and again yesterday whilst I gave it a clean. I was going to take it to work this morning but I had problems getting it started.

Once the glowplugs light went out, I cranked it and it started immediately but after a second it cut out. It then restarted after approx 10-15 seconds of cranking. I didn’t want to risk any problems and jumped into my trusty Tucson.

Eight hours later my BIL turned up to view the ML and it did the same thing.

I called the mechanic (Merc specialist) who replaced the injector seals last week. He was very helpful and told me that he replaced two seals that were leaking and cleaned the injectors whilst they were out but he advised my friend that the injector/s may not be holding fuel pressure and will require replacement if the starting problems persist.

Whilst the engine will eventually start and once it does it runs absolutely fine, I am now selling this for £750 on a spares or repairs basis. A replacement injector may solve the problem or maybe even the original injectors could be refurbished, I don’t know.

Receipt for repairs carried out last week:

And this is what I found with the engine cover removed. No sign of an active leak but the injectors are dirty.

Once started this car will drive anywhere.

Who’s up for a challenge?

Getting access to the injectors is easy and at least two will come out with ease. If it wasn’t so f’ing cold outside or if the ML would fit in my workshop I would have given the repairs a go but as things are I don’t fancy it.

Oh FFS. Now it's simultaneously more and less tempting than before...

Black Death avoided but yes there are issues.

Yep, that about sums it up

Not sure if this is the same engine as in my old Kia Sedona 2004, but I had to have all four injectors refurbished to cure the cold start issues, £75 per injector cash, so not too bad really, would be tempted if I didn't already have a Lexus RX300 and a P38 Rangie in the fleet :)

I would be interested in that Lexus if it helps.

Total bargain that. I have no time whatsoever to give it any attention atm and it would make my very complicated situation twice as complex. GLWTS.

I suspect, if the Kia had four cylinders, it is not the same engine ;)

???

He means, was the current owner experiencing similar starting problems, and is that why it went to the mechanic to have the injector seals looked at?

Sorry to hear about your friend Peter,

Had to do this myself for my friend due to cancer, it really is a bastard.

Hope the ML finds a good home.

Someone's got a barg and I hope you're mate gets to spend the cash as he wants it due to his current situation.

Looking at that so called repair, I'd say there's no way those injectors have been taken out and re-seated and if so, why the hell didn't the mechanic clean the carbon from that area first?

Anyway, that will NOT affect the starting, mine had proper black death on it for years after getting the seats done for a 3rd time and in the end I just couldn't be arsed but despite that, it never affected the starting.

It will most likely be the small "o" ring seals that are all around the clear diesel pipes in the engine bay(about £10 for 10 from Merc themselves) None are really hard to replace and a quick test is to get it started then turn it so the nose is pointing downhill overnight. Go out in the morning and there'll be a good chance it well start instantly and run fine. Mine certainly did!!!

Another common failure are those electrical connectors that go to the injectors, if anyone of those is loose or comes off, it cuts the engine or straight away and no offence to the mechanic that did the work, but if he's happy to hand a car back with the injectors in that state, then I doubt if he's going to give a shit if he's cracked an injector connection or chaffed the loom.

If these ever go down on power/bad economy, disconnect the exhaust after the turbo (really easy to do, one big clamp and then the cat can be moved back) and take it for a spin, it feels like a totally different car. Good chance that both cats have failed, the front fails and the bits get shoved into the rear cat blocking everything up. Best thing I did too mine was gut them both. Never caused any MOT issues as you can't see them when they're done.

This one sounds a good one though because you can get top gear on it, I couldn't until I binned the cats on mine!!!!

Just a few tips for the new owner.

Despite what the internet tells you these are damn fine motors and that looks in brilliant condition.
