Screen wash

Hmm.  Given my current choice of screen cleaner, ummmm, TEH INTERNETZ says this.......

Bleach + Vinegar = Toxic Chlorine Gas. While the combination does create a good disinfectant, these two common cleaning agents should never be used at the same time. Why: Adding any weak acid to bleach will release toxic chlorine and chloramine.

Interesting in traffic jams one would imagine....

I use autoglym stuff. Aldi/Lidl cant remember which have a load of 5L ones for £1.49 just now on offer. A winter and a summer. Summer has a rainx type product in it.

I use water. My washer is so piss weak that I simply don't bother.

Screen wash is not an legal requirement here!

I spend so much time in petrol stations that I just use the squeegee there.

I don't think it's a legal requirement here either.

The cheap screenwash is only good down to -0.1C so it's pretty useless even in the mildest parts of the UK.

Screen wash as a product isn't a legal requirement, bad reading on my part, that's what I thought you meant.

Just to add to the views on this topic, my wife's Zafira is a nightmare as I have to take the front bumper off to get at the filter which blocks up and clean it out. So what I put in there is important.

Whereas my Astra has the filter on the bulkhead and can be cleaned in no time at all. So put anything in it.

I don't think the Viva has a filter. It has one of those old systems with a manual pump but it doesn't go out much.

I wouldn't put bleach in. It might eat some of the plastics or the paint, aside from the points made above and that it is generally not good stuff. Just my opinion.

Buy the pre-mixed stuff from whatever petrol station i'm in.  Of course it freezes immediately once the temperature dips below -0.25C but I do find that it cleans the screen better when it does come out.  Never had a problem with my screen\headlight washers clogging up.

They used to sell universal washer bottle heating kits on eBay for about £20.

It was basically a tiny kettle coil you threw in the bottle. Can't find them anywhere.

IIRC Merc's of a certain era were fitted with them as standard?

The Rover was filled with water for years before we got it, the jets would regularly block up and the reservoir absolutely stank.

Had to remove it for a thorough clean and ran it with neat stuff for a while to clear the pipes, been fine ever since with a 50/50 mix.

Sonax ultra concentrated is amazing in warmer months, for winter anything cheap will do as you get through so much of the stuff commuting.

ECP are doing a BOGOF on their QX 5 litre screenwash (purple - concentrate) for £5.89 according to their emailshot.

Didldidi superconcentrated stuff, although as said not seen it in stock for a good while.

I once mixed bleach and acetic acid - it wasn't as god an idea as I had thunk.   Premises evacuated.

I bought a heap of screenwash cheap from Screwfix last year, still using it and it seems to be OK.

I've always used a pin.

I take my jets out and back-flush them under the hot tap then blow through with compressed air.  Pin doesn't work on the C5 jets.

I'd like to do that with the (roof mounted) rear one, but not sure if pulling it out forcibly will result in NOT being able to replace it again... Anyone done this with a Xantia?

Working washers are a legal requirement....

Not necessarily, if they are fitted they have to work; however I have had cars that did not have any, they were not required as the cars had opening or folding windscreens. OK they'd now be MOT exempt due to age, but something like a Caterham on aeroscreens won't need washers, or wipers to be legal.

Stagnant washer bottles are the worst.

Spraying Listeria bacteria over tailgaters?

Sounds like an idea
