Best car in the world?

No that’s a good shout. Those cavaliers were a good all rounder.

If the auto box had 4 gears and cruise control (i suspect that somewhere in Europe they got it) I'd suggest that.

A friend has owned one of these for a number of years, and while it's clearly an impressive car on a number of levels, the low-rent Ford parts bin switchgear just grates every time I'm in the car.

Jesus Christ.

Having owned 2 metros I have to say there's nothing in my current motoring use that wouldn't be perfect for a metro.

obviously if they had 5 speed gearboxes in the Turbo it would have been better.

Wow. You’re making me want one.

I am heartened to see when money no object was mentioned that nobody on this forum has put up a Veyron or F40 etc.

I’d like to drive a Veyron though, they must be tremendous things.

^^ agreed. Instead we have mini metros.

Honestly... money no object...

Two cars sit prominently on my list.

1) Bentley Blower. If I had the cash I’d buy two. One for every day and one for nice occasions. IMHO the best car ever made.

2) But if it rained....

I’d let an Aston Martin Lagonda take the strain... an epic tour de force of fail. So bad it’s utterly fantastic.

I’ve absolutely no interest in Ferrari’s, Lamborghinis etc, it holds no relevance to me as I’d not likely be in the market for one. I mean what’s the lower bar for this discussion? Are we going on looks? Technical merit? Ability to see 200,000 out without some wallet bashing?

Some of the cars in this thread barely function as cars, never mind the best in the world!

That’s no way to talk about Montego Vanden Plas...

Hold on a moment here........ Mk2 Cavalier?! Best car in the world?!

What sort of world is that, then?

Get a fucking grip.

It wasn't even anywhere close to the best boring medium sized four door saloon of the early eighties. Not by miles it wasn't. See my earlier post about the E30. This makes my point in a nutshell. The E30 was so good because it was just so far ahead of utter shit like the Cavalier mk2 in every single important and measurable way. Other then price, if lower price is good, but it's not in this thread. This is price no object.

Adding to my 325iSE and SA 745i, I'd also have a 507 and an M1.

Is there a better looking car than the 507? I'm on my phone with poor Internet. RBJ can add a photo.

This month’s all time favourite best car of evah for me would be a throughly sorted and reliable Citroen SM, in that bronze colour.

Next month’s will be something different, mind.

Not a bad shout on the XJ12C, either.

Totally agree with a different car every month.

507 I'm not sure on. Nice but the XKSS blows it out of the sea. Ditto 300SL Gullwing for sheer drama.

I'd love an M1, a Honda NSX but ten years earlier - a Ferrari that works and is properly made.

Pics you say?

Without a doubt, if I were to win the lottery I'd be doing my utmost to find the absolute best 456 out there. I have been captivated by them since I was 6 or so....

I'd no doubt also buy a 604/SM/130 Coupe too, but the 456 first. In blue with cream leather please.

Ive never owned a J type mk2 Cavalier although I've driven many. However as a progressive Fwd family car of the early eighties it was a very good car that in reality ran rings around its immediate rivals and predated the Sierra by over twelve months in the market place. It was built to its price point simple as that.

The E30 not only arrived later to the market place, the E21 still had a year or so to go when the Mk2 Cav arrived, and the four door e30 didn't even arrive until 1985. It was built in an era when Beemers really were Beemers..and therefore occupied a totally different elevated position in the market place, they weren't ever meant to compete with one another on price or quality. The Mk2 Cav was a great family car, the E30 a great junior executive sports saloon.

Both excellent cars in their respective categories for their era. I wouldnt say no to a tidy example of either as a daily, but neither would be on my best car list I'm afraid.

Lovely - either that or a 550/575M The front engined V12 stuff was always nice.

At least Hitler had an appreciation of what the best car in the world means.
