Peugeot Diesels of the 90s

Yo.

Surely someone here would go on Mastermind with the aforementioned as their specialist subject.

I’m trying to balance the books a little better at mine - and figured a £150 a month fuel saving would help see me retired a little sooner and with less credit card debt.

My journey is a 100 mile jolly along B and A roads - nearly always in top gear apart from a mile of village road at my end and 3 miles at the other. It’s all off peak - I never get stuck in traffic.

In the search for many MPGs - what am I looking for? XUD?? I’m not pissing about with WVO - so pumps irrelevant.

The big question: driving nicely at 70 like your father would, what am I expecting MPG wise?

Finally. Anything for sale? Needs to be presentable and about £500 to make the maths work. No point spending pounds to save pennies.

Citroen ZX 1.9d if you like them.... and yes in my opinion XUD. You then have a choice of Citroen and Peugeot’s with this engine fitted.....

OR so I have been told 70mpg is achievable from a 1.5 diesel Peugeot 106.....

If you could spend a bit more I am commuting 106 miles a day to work round trip all motorway and I sit at 60/65 (using the 2007 fiesta 1.6 tdci which is the Peugeot 1.6 HDi engine I believe) and I am achieving 69.4mpg which equates to a cost of £9 a day give or take a few pence to travel the 106 miles taking the cost of diesel to be £1.30 per litre

I am however going to be switching to my Audi A6 Avant just because it is more comfortable and has cruise control and a banging BOSE system - driving like the above I would still be seeing 55mpg..... I am 6ft 6....

What about a 206 1.4 HDi....just make sure it hasn’t got a dicky back axle...£30 road tax too like Fiesta above...

406 hdi 90 does about 50mpg mixed in estate form.

I think if you want proper minge bag didn't chompy get 70mpg from a clio and 320touring did same with a Skoda.

2.3D Sierra, Peugeot 504/505 but I expect the days of finding them for £500 are gone. All should do at least 40 more like 45mpg

305/ 405's/ 205s are probably available around that money if you look around for long enough, Citroen Visa's are universally unloved (except for on here) and will cheerfully do very high MPG's and are happy at speed

Buy something modern for pennies, run on cherry and chuck them the keys if you get stopped or ring the frag man if it detonates

First shape Yaris with one litre vvti. Cheap to buy cheap to keep and ridiculously economical. Added bonus of not being fitted with an engine better suited to wagons and cement mixers !!

I did 10k in a 306 na xud, it averaged about 47-52 mpg, normally bombing along at above 70 mph as the boredom of long commutes for a while pissed me off.

They can be picked up cheap, but you will need to do the odd job on them, and I think I have heard you say before you can’t really afford to be late for work etc etc.

But parts are cheap and they are a nice drive.

You don't have to piss about with WVO, just get a Bosch pumped one and lob some of the_new_veggies in it, straight off the shelf. That will help your man maths even more by reducing costs.

I can confirm 70ish mpg is quite feasible from a 1.4hdi 206.

I can also confirm that I would not want to commute 100 miles in one in a regular basis.

Most stuff fitted with the old XUD stuff are old nails, occasionally you get something nice but I’d say a HDI is way forward, more economical as well.

Diesel is a bit of a lottery, but to hedge your bets I’d say possibly an old B5 Passat 1.9TDI, Peugeot 406 HDI or Vectra 2.0 DTI. Anything newer than that and it’s a bit of a gamble, you could find a decent Mondeo Diesel for round that money but it has to run smooth and not be clattering from the DMF. Run it till it goes bang, don’t spend anything on it and you might be ok. Forget any ideas on repairs to fuel systems at this money.

A decent late HDI 306 might be a good bet, and certainly a better car than the 307. 406s are also good, although cheap ones tend to be a bit hanging....it really depends on how long you need it for, if you can luck out (and it is possible) on a 406/306 with a long MOT and recent belts (or recent enough, if it's got 10-15k left it's no bother) then it will probably not ever let you down.

The XUD11 406 is a nice steer, but they eat speedo cables and can be a PITA to work on.

Yeah actually that's a good call. The TD 205s are little rockets and are fun. It has some really nice soft pews too.

Mpg wise I've always found the old TDs to be more economical than the HDis. Perhaps because the hdi encourages you to put your foot down a bit more.

However, for a good balance of purchase cost Vs mpg I'd go for a C5 hdi hatchback. Universally unloved and super comfy. Get an SX and it'll have auto wipers and cruise control too...

Can confirm you can do 70mpg in an AX 1.5d.

This is bloody lovely. (adds to watch list)

Seller obviously knows about the cars and how to keep them going, belts changed sub 20k ago, and it's the tasty 2.2 HDi....

I actually quite like that....only really like these in executive trim as leather is my preference

Buy it and then I'll give you the E36 for it....hahaha.

But yes, the C5 is a bit under-rated too. My old HDi 90 wasn't that slow, and did 300 miles to half a tank, 70 was 2k revs, and the seats were nice and wide.

Plus they are pretty safe.

Beware that there is a few dogs out there, but my decent one cost £540 on eBay.

It's a shame their so bloody unreliable as my 1.9dci 6 speed manual laguna will do 61mpg if I literally reset the computer and drive to shitefest, without nailing it around back roads first...

My commute has it at 54/55 and that's without really trying and a good 25 minute crawl up a fucked bypass when I leave the office.

You work in the radio though, so if you have an ftp your boss can't just cover for you and pretend it never happened...

My 1.9td zx was frugal, never knew how much as I didn't calculate it but £20 would last me all week (250 miles). Must have been a bit more than the gooner tbh as the gooner needs another £20 on the way home on Thursday to avoid the fuel light if I've just put £20 in (god I've worked at my current job too long!)

Xantia, although fairly economical when I made it be never was in the real world as Chompy snakes tweaks were far too much fun to ignore!

Its a shame the bloody xm needed £40/50 a week in petrol tbh, sodding thing

Avoid the 2.2, it's shit

Have you considered the new mot rules and dpfs? If I were you I'd definitely be looking for something pre-dpf. The 8v 2.0 HDis didn't have them.

A VW Polo TDI is worth considering, I’ve had my 02 plater for 2 years now and it’s bloody brilliant, very very frugal and a nice drive for a small car even for a great oaf like me, all in all a very well made and cheap to run little car....
