cars of the stars quiz (no googling allowed ; - ))

The cars very often ARE the stars of the show, but what "private" wheels did the following have?

Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson

Det. Sgt. George Carter (and for a bonus, his car in his latest / last TV Cop role)

Sgt. Oscar Blaketon

If Hutch's car is the thing he jumps on, I'm thinking LTD or whatever low spec versions were called.

I think Carter drives a Mini and in the Last of the Summer wine Police thing, a Stag.

A Morris Traveller that looks suspiciously like a very late one. ( Although not as out of period as that mid70's Beetle with a 90's cabriolet conversion the bird from the pub drives)

Ive just Googled Derek in Corrie and he was in it from 1977 until 1997, so before his Corsa he probably had a few different cars, presumably never decent rep stuff like Cortinas and Cavaliers, he was a comedy sales rep ,after all.

Originally Derek had a Morris Marina company car followed by a few others including a Talbot Solara and at the height of his career ladder a Citroen BX that Kevin Webster refused to fix for him.

There's a later scene where he asks Kevin to find him a dark green Escort RS Turbo for a grand (He was between company cars at this point) and KW tells him there's no such motor for less than four grand!

(God my youth was depressing,

Anyway moving on Reg Holdsworth had two vehicles during his time on the cobbles, can anyone name both?

Harry Hewitt was crushed under his own van, what was it?

What optional extra did Lynne secure for Alan when he had to down grade to a Rover 25 from his 820? And, was Alan pleased?

Correct-o-mondo on the Mini (he specifically refers to it as being brand new in one episode) and the Stag.

Traveller of course correct (Heartbeat was bad for out-of-period - the Police Mini van was a late one too...)

I am going to leave Hutch open for a while - there is a specific thing I am thinking of which featured in at least one epsiode....

Was that the A35 in the viaduct scene?

Let's see if anyone else remembers what Hackett's car was in Target. I've got an image in my head, in the past I've Googled it and the only clips I've found show him in usual 70's Police type Fords, although a couple of 5 Series were also used. Which was probably quite accurate as it was set in Southampton.

I might have completely misremembered, of course.

Also what did Lewis Collins' character drive in Cuckoo Waltz ? It changed in the second series.

I seem to live in an alternate universe as I've never heard of nearly all of these characters

All I can offer is: Charlene from Neighbours had a Holden Kingswood wagon, with a daft psychedelic paintjob

Lewis Collins' character (Gavin) had a Lotus Europa, I think, in the Cuckoo Waltz, which was replaced by a De Tomaso Pantera (with GAV 1N reg no).

Hackett had some sort of yank job as his personal car, could have been a GTO. His work car was a mk4 Cortina with the usual Ford press fleet PNO reg, he had it taken off him in one episode and given a clapped out mk3.

I think Harry Hewitt was crushed by a Bedford CA.

In one of the Sweeney episodes, Carter also had a green mk1 Escort.

I couldn't remember Hackett having a Yank.  Shamefully, I had to google it but I am keeping quiet until someone guesses!

We did have 5 series police cars in Southampton but I would imagine the cars in the series were props, although there was at least one episode of Target featuring one of the stars of our taxi-cab ranks at the time - grey Volvo 144 reg. 1 HHO.    And I didn't google that!

Called Bertha IIRC

Ah, so are we on about the yellow mk1 Escort? IIRC he borrows that from his girlfriend, the brake lines get cut and he ends up crashing through an advertising hoarding and rolling down an embankment.

There was a yank in series one but apparently it didn't appear after that....

I'm thinking a red, MK2 Sierra (prefacelift) but don't know why....

Hutch, the only character in this entire thread I have ever heard of, usually drove a beige '73 Ford Galaxie 500.

In one episode he went undercover drug dealing with a Rolls Royce Corniche convertible.

He pronounced Corniche kor-nigh-chee despite David Soul knew damn well how it's pronounced properly.

4th series, episode 18, Hutch's Galaxie gets blown up.   He digs this out of the garage for the following episode...

Ah well, if we're doing series and dramas, not just soaps, then we already have threads going for them

The last time I watched Coronation Street was back in the sixties in black and white. The first person in the street to own a car had an old Morris 8 two seater convertible I think it was. The name Stan Ogden springs to mind but that may be also wrong. I can remember thinking then that they were on a slippery slope to the gentrification of the street if they started owning cars.

Posted

Stan Ogden never had anything fancier than a handcart with a little triangular ladder attached.

It seems my memory of Hackett's car was all in my head. I was sure he had a yellow Renault 15 ( or possibly 17), but then I'm sure I wasn't supposed to watch it at the time and I don't think it's ever been repeated.

I remember Ken Barlow owning a car in the 1970s. I think I should fuck off to mumsnet now.

Nope it was a bit larger

Nope but Don Brennan had a red MK2 Cavalier as a taxi around that time so you might be thinking of that

I'm dying to know what cars Regs Holdsworth had!

Originally he had a Mini 1275GT with alloys and sports exhaust, When he became Proprietor of The Corner Shop he swapped the Mini for a blue Bedford Rascal van.

I think Albert Tatlock wouldn't speak to Ken, because he had bought a German car, a Beetle iirc.

Yes and yes. Pretty sure the Beetle was orange 'cos we had a colour telly by then.
