As one silver Kraut dream machine prepares to leave the building..........

What's the general consensus? Buy it, buy it or buy it? Needs to be cheap though, mid hundreds.

I haven't shouted and sworn at a shit BMW for at least a week.

Wer hat diese Stück restmüll entworfen? Ich werde niemals lernen! Bangle Design meinen Arsch!

Only way that could be more grim would be if it was a fucked 730d

Buy it! ;)

It's hard to believe it wasn't designed by a 15-year old :-D

I'd be giving that one a swerve tbh. But then I don't like working on BMWs.

HOT TAKE: I like the E65 pre-facelift 7-series because it stands out from the crowd and dares to be different, without losing its typical 7-series presence. It would need to be in a darker color though, silver makes almost any vehicle look bland.

The 730i probably is the most reliable of the bunch, as the M54 i6 is a fairly reliable engine, unlike the V8s that even after multiple generations still have major engineering mistakes that will render 99% of them uneconomical to run in the not so distant future. The diesels probably aren't much better at this age, with the added complexity of diesel related equipment and general neglect that most of them experience now.

The other problem with the E65 is that it was a test bed for major technological advancements (i-Drive infotainment being the prime example) when many of these features were just not in a stage yet where you could expect long-term reliability from them. Pair that with high BMW parts prices and, once again, most of them will suffer fairly annoying failures that will render most of them not suitable for 90% of their potential owners.

Of course none of this would stop me from owning one of them, I guess it really just needs the right one at the right price. I'd get a nice 745i/Li in black some unusual (not grey) color with (not grey) interior.

Oh, and if you decide to get this one, consider that I might be interested in buying it from you despite everything I just said lol.

LPG filler probably means skinflint owner.

Still would though, at a 3 figure price surely you won't lose out as they must break ok?

Did you ascertain which vital fluid it appears to have pissed?

Sounds fucked. Get several tins of strong continental lager down you and get bidding.

Get it bought.

I put a pretty well stripped one over the bridge yesterday for £160, plus another £170 for the cats.

They are very slow breakers, like all sevens. Not enough of them around in use. Good rare bits go very quickly. You need to have some of them to make it worthwhile. The one I bought had valuable wheels. That and the cats were all that was worth having really.

A friend from the BMW club persevered for a couple of years, but the level of complication and therefore bills were frightening!

The E38 was always going to be a tough act to follow styling-wise, but the E65 is, even today, still absolutely gopping. Going from the classic BMW clean cut lines to Bangle's 'flame surfacing' design philosophy was always going to be a leap of faith though. I didn't like the E60 either but that has grown on me over time to a point where I now own one, and in time will become (in sport guise especially) something of a design classic.

Anyway, have you bought it yet?

Can’t see that rattle from the engine being something simple and cheap somehow. Problem with a lot of stuff like this is it’s down at bargain bucket money a lot will have been run on a shoestring, skinflint owners running it on part worns and an service every 5 years whether it needs it or not comprised of an oil change with the wrong oil.

I liked the pre facelift one more, weird and 'unusual'.

I've got £450 for it. Pointless paying more. Never pay more than 'oh shit!' get out of jail money.

Going through tomorrow but judging by the insanity that surrounds salvage prices, some mug will pay close to a grand.

Could be the water pump hanging out - check the flow of fluids from the front!

If you can bodge it then flip it on to someone on Bumtree for a grand, it’ll be winging its way to Slovakia after that.

It's listed as Category U 'uncompleted repair' so it will have had Igor and Vlad doing skilful repairs with a Whitworth socket set and a hammer already.

Is it on Ebay...?

Nevermind, found it. I'll keep an eye on it but promise to not bid on it until you met your personal limit. ;-)

You got it then?

They are nice vehicles. If ever I have some money tucked away I might treat myself to one if cheap enough.

I did drive one of these, a 730d but it was completely fucked, really not looked after. The front axle didn't actually feel like it was attached to the car!

... and then coming back here on foreign plates, 'cos free* motoring.

I like these. A lot. I tried to buy a not-knackered one and gave up after a very long time.

Fault-finding on electrical problems will be a complete and utter bastard. Buy it.

I’d doubt very much once Boris has started taking the engine apart it will make it back here under its own steam. It will be on some bricks outside a house on the border of Hungary being used as a chicken coop.

Bloody hell, it's hard to believe that shape is 15 years old now...

Its hard to believe that a car designer came up with that shape, and even harder to believe his boss didnt throw him out the nearest window when he presented it to him.

The e38 was a georgeous car and they replaced it with that !
