A mate of mine is off to collect a LHD 2.0 VW Beetle from 1999 (I think) tonight.

 

It is pretty cheap though, as in free. For that price it's a great idea!

I couldn't care less tbh. It makes no difference to me even in a daily driver. It only starts to play a role when you try to overtake a bus (you have to move over a bit earlier to still be able to look around it) or when at the car park barrier. Any other situations are business as usual and it shouldn't play much of a role in a classic car.

Only an issue for me at car park barriers etc. Reverseing takes a bit of practice at first and it's hard to look cool when you have absent-mindedly got into the car on the wrong side.

 

There are some cars which are much worse when converted to RHD, VW Beetle - the original rear engined ones - for example. The pedal arangement just doesn't work properly on RHD Beetles, the throttle pedal is in the wrong place as is the clutch unless you have very short legs. I have been told that similarly, a RHD 911 is also not as nice to drive as LHD. I expect the opposite holds with some British and Japanese models in LHD form.

Actually, LHD Maestros are pretty common following on from their 'Ledbury' revival in the late 90s. LHD 'proper' Maestros are a bit harder to find in the UK. They seemed to sell pretty well in Europe, but there's not much demand to repatriate them from the UK. This one was new in Zurich in 1984. I have a friend who has a German MG1600 with the voice synthesis that speaks in French, German and Italian.

Doesn’t bother me. I like American cars anyway so there’s not a great deal of choice! Anything else though, I’d have no problem going to somewhere else and bringing back a left hooker version.

A LHD American market mk1 Capri is high on my want list!

Only problem with lhd is ticket barriers and tolls if you're solo. I've had many lhd in the UK, never really had a problem. Quite often it was an advantage on overtakes to get a good view up the inside that rhd wouldn't get.

Lhd is no cheaper because there's a European market just over the sea where second hand cars are daft money and plenty of e xpats who can't or won't deal with native sellers.

Cars like the escort imported from foreign climes can sometimes stand a better chance of being more steel than rust.....

 

Probably a few brought over and used to reshell terminal UK cars....and or build rally slags

Most of mine are only available as left hand drive. The Seat and the Renault 7 were never imported. I don't have a problem with it but for more mundane stuff particuarly Escorts the RHD will have a massive premium. LHD does have it's issues driving in the UK the main one being how to overtake safely, but if it is for something rare and unobtainable in the UK you can put up with it. There again if you go old enough and upmarket enough most posh French cars were RHD from new. (Hotchkiss, Buggatti etc)

I think the only way that you'd be able to easily obtain a 1970s or 1980s French 'executive' car in decent condition these days is to buy one from the south of France, therefore LHD. This wouldn't be a problem for me, considering the type of car I'd be getting

I'd reverse though. Negotiating those tight turns could be tricky though. Attach a caravan for added comedy. Ideally get the fucker jacknifed where you have to pay. Get it impossibly stuck.

I took the Mercury to our depot at work once when I was off for the week to hand a time sheet in. We’ve got a security gate with a pac access which you wind down the window and swipe your ID card over to open the gate.

LHD Yank not compatible as the pac swipe thing is for RHD.

Easily fixed by planning ahead! I took a length of bamboo cane and a lump of bluetack. Simply sick the bluetack to the end of the cane, stick my ID card to that, passenger window down and swipe by stick! Easy. And I pissed them all off by taking up four spaces in a very limited car park!

A good deal of LHD stuff in the UK is bought by people with second homes in Europe to take over there and leave there. That's why it's no longer a cheap option. I know several people who've done this as often buying a local Leftie is alot more expensive and frequently in poorer condition. This is what I've been told is especially true in France.

It's a 1990 series 2 v6. Fitted with the PRV 2.8 with auto box. We never got series 2 v6 in UK. They got much better injection system than s1 cars. Silky smooth to drive loads of torque.

Unfortunately my girlfriend at the time couldn't and crashed it three times.  Twice on the same day too, through the same width restriction...
