Which French cars would 'wash their face' in the UK?

Find and procure me a really good (= solid, complete, running, non-project) Renault 14TS or possibly GTL. You won’t make as much as tenfolding your money on a Sweeney spec Granada, but I would pay you a sensible commission. I may even come and collect it with you (depending on timing versus work), complete with trailer.

I haven’t seen one in that’s sort of condition since 1981. That’s very nice indeed....

I brought a nice 14TS back a few years ago and had a job selling it on for reasonable money. I think I got 1500 quid for it but that was more luck than anything. It is still about over in Essex somewhere. When I imported it there were a lot of people saying how much they would love a 14 but when it came to selling they didn't want to pay the money. 14's do rust like buggery so beware mine looked good but needed quite a bit of welding to get it up to mot standard.

I'd rather have something that could easily be converted into RHD. Sadly a 2 door Mk1 Granada is difficult to convert without cutting out the bulkhead. Ditto Mk1 Escorts or so I'm told.

Can I use this thread as an excuse to post this picture?

Hubba hubba.

Edit: at the 14TS, not at Warren’s dodgy pictures.

Nice to see Fuegobird back in action.

EGG - remember this is the outfit required to repair Fuegos so make sure you are comfortable with that before purchase. Jodphurs are OK too

Is that an Audi 50/Polo in the background?

14 was one of my few French cars...very nippy, very 2CV ish when it came to handling, but also felt like driving a Very comfy chair!!!

2-door Range Rovers were sold in France alongside the usual 4-door stuff, right up to the 90's. They make a surprising amount of money in the UK, as 2-doors are just so rare here and they do (subjectively) look so much better.

Also very easy to convert to RHD. Everything is bolt-on-bolt-off. 1 French 2-door RR + 1 rotten UK RR = highly desireable car.

Considered doing it several times.

Audi 80 (B1).

Although there is some great stuff in this thread, the only things likely to make any money are the usual 80s VWs, Fast Ford's and 2cvs.

Sad innit.

Nobody had a R14 poster on their bedroom wall.

Renault 14 is one of those cars everybody remembers but no fucker apart from Autoshiters actually wants.

Having said all that I'd like one.

Old Fords would make a few quid back here especially 3 door Sierra's.

I'd love to run around in a 14 for a bit,  but not so much that I'd want to spend big for the pleasure,

This website apart, I reckon the chances of reselling would be next to zero.

Aye, and that's the conclusion I came to about my 2 cylinder LNA dreams - lose £500 as soon as it comes through Dover and beg 6cyl to buy it ;-)

How much are Peugeot 305 vans and estates? FOAD seems to hoover those up!

Maybe the Skizzer approach is best to start off with - find someone who wants something, go and get it with a commission for your trouble so you have a risk free first run. Then next time around you will have a little more experience of the procedure and can go a bit mad.

That Granada though...350 Euros, even if it is shit the banger boys will give you a profit margin on that

Phase 1 Twingos are dirt cheap over here in D. Nothing easier than buying and importing one since most sellers speak English and  affordable export-plates are available for everyone. Mobile.de, ebay-kleinanzeigen, autoscout24.de etc.

I'd love an early R11 with marshmallow like seats.

Has to be a pre-facelift though.

I do like twingos. One of those would be an inexpensive way to “dip your toes” in the world of Euro imports.

Thanks, I have noticed this. I don't want to turn this into another 'how to import' thread, but would be interested if you have a link on the best place to get export plates. Thanks.

Will look that up for details. You need an insurance and the car must have TÜV. Some bigger dealers offer Ausfuhrkennzeichen, otherways you have to get them at the local administration.
