I have come to terms with having a car that is a car to be used as a car. Like a medium quality hammer, its unassuming but does what is asked of it when needed. Its not pretty, does nothing fancy, impresses nobody at all, is overlooked and ignored by even DUBBERZ but can be relied upon to knock a panel pin into a wall or stove a burglars arseflaps to pieces when required. Automotively speaking.

 

Its a turnkey matching numbers fridge and is characteristically uncool.

I feel the same way about my Bora, it just works, in an uninspiring way. I forgot how dull the MK4 Golf platform cars are to drive.

The Passat is similarly STODGY I imagine.

Its just being an dailly car. Nothing to note thus far, other than north of 50 mpg and over 500 miles per tank being chewed up and swallowed.

The radio silence here made me wonder if you'd fallen victim to OMGTF and/or OMGDMFF (Possible SDI driver's chadenfreude on my part)

Well not long after me saying there was nothing to report, there is now something to report.

Was out in the car for a couple of hours of motorway driving today and when I got home I noticed water in the passenger footwell.

 

Now it hasnt rained for about three weeks so I found this rather odd.

 

On closer inspection, it looks like theres two or three litres in the passenger footwell.

 

Came in through the the underdash area, on top of the rubber floor mats for the most part, and through this sponge affair under the dash.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I would hope it was the rain drains under the battery but the car hasnt been washed or seen the rain for ages. The coolant looks a bit low. Someones been in before as some of the under dash trim isnt fitted correctly and theres cable ties around.

 

Before I head to google, any ideas what that sponge thing leads to and where this fluid is coming from?

Not sure what coolant smells or tastes like to be honest. Not keen on having a sip out of the header tank, then a suck of the carpet. Ive stuck the mats out to dry. They dried pretty fast in this heat. Coolant tank is lower than it was though.

Tastes sweet. Rainwater doesn’t (except maybe in Boro).

Thats what I had hoped but the cars not been wet for weeks and weeks and it all just ramdomly fell out today. Ill give this sponge a suck and see what it tastes like.

If the heater matrix has shat itself then am I right in thinking it won't put out any heat?

 

If so then wack the temp up and see if it gets toasty in there, if not then we have a culprit.

Does this have working Aircon? If you've been using it, I wonder if it's a condensate drain pipe that has come loose?

Okden.

Just been out to complete some analogue diagnostics after the suggestions made here and in other corners of the internetional superhighway.

 

The heaters warm up quick and blow hot. Probs not the heater matrix then.

 

Took it for a long run with the air con off and there was no further leaks.

Probably not coolant related then.

 

So one last thing to test. Took a brave pill and headed to the Scuttle Drain Scientific Testing Station .

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Results are in and I can unanimously declare that no further leaks have occured.

 

I think every one that said air con drain pipe thing deserves 100 internest points. Seems to be the culprit. Handily, further leaks can be avoided by not turning the air con on.

 

Bonus outcome is that the car us now shiny clean.

The heaters may well still work irrespective of matrix failure as the waterpump will continue to pump coolant through it, unless the leak is collosal the matrix would still remain fairly full.

 

Whip of the plastic trim under the scuttle and lift the battery to check for standing water there as plenum drains block, the water could have been standing there for ages before finally seaping into the cabin

 

Also, be sure to dry out the passenger footwell area pronto, that's where the CCM lives and getting it wet never ends well.
