Fuck knows what the local offices did before DVLC was established but I'm at a loss to know why that didn't go on a B-suffix, seeing as "age-related" marks weren't a thing back then.

Not all councils used year letters before they were made standard in 1965, probably because many smaller ones still had a large allocation yet to be issued.

Some of the smaller Scottish councils were still issuing their original AB1234 allocation in 1964!

indeed the suffix letter only became mandatory on the 1st of Jan 1965  

I do wonder at times, if instead of making it mandatory to switch to suffix, if each county council was allowed to keep using their age-less marks until they ran out, im curious when each office would have ran out and what sort of "early registration" madness that might have lead too, I mean the Bute CC and Clackmannanshire CC only made it as far as SJ 2860 and SL 2860 respectively!

theres a utter shed load of xxxXXX registration marks that went unissued (and the ugly ones are now issued as age related plates)

 

 

PS to be a little pedantic, age related plates where a thing back then, just issued a bit differently and not as strictly as to how they are today

and amusingly often the age related mark would today be more valuable then whatever plate it was replacing (if it was replacing one)

see 2632D as an example  (ok thats an age related plate issued to an import, but the same would be issued a vehicle of such if it was robbed of its plate at that time and place, its amusing back then all they did was take the Buff logbook cross out the old registration mark and write the new one next to it!)
