What shite? daily

Ladies and Gents i am after some shite advice (this time not from the wife) as i am in need of a daily crapwagon to take myself approx 50 miles per day 5 days of the week on M25/A2 to a new job i have acquired.I have been semi-retired for approx 5 years but the money is good and building sites have taken their toll on me over the last 30 years so instead of grafting hard for 6 mths on and 6 mths off i will be working full time but far less work (i have a good pal who has been there for years).

My Aygo is pretty dire on fast roads and the Alfa is very juicy achieving 20 mpg on a good day and the other half thinks i should buy new/lease etc but i tend to ruin cars fairly easily with tip runs, dog using the back seat and so on...

So shite wise i need a auto (left kneecap injury which gives me pain after clutch action) and id prefer petrol and comfort but thats about all i need..

Volvo and Saab spring to mind but i have owned a few of both and i am a bit bored with them so any others i should keep in mind.

thanks Sam

I do the same mileage on mostly motorways and a Volvo diesel 1999 does well. If you’re bored of them I had a good run with a 1998 Skoda Octavia but watch the seats are comfortable for you.

Reasonable sized mile muncher, auto and petrol.

Gotta be a merc!

What's the budget?

I do the same sort of trip in a £150 gooner. Been fine so far!

I've used a SEAT Leon for much higher mileage than that for the last year and it's really nice in the motorway but then I saw your budget and I recommended an absolutely mint avensis estate, could easily get a newer model or a mint gleaming low mileage late estate. Drive lovely, don't break, great for a daily commute as they're really comfy.

Thanks for the ideas so far..

I have my eye on a local Honda crv mk1 1998 auto but the owner isnt sure if/when he wants to sell and i can see why as he has owned it from new and it is mint..

I prefer the early Crv to any of the other series but will continue looking as i am sure there some little gems out there..

MK 1 CRV with auto box will only do around 23mpg. With a tiny 50(ish)L tank that will drive you crazy and make you poor!

If you are hacking up and down the motorway buy the cheapest car that meets your NEEDS (not desires) and pocket £4K ready for buying another 4 similar cars when and if it goes pop.

That said I'd buy a V6 omega and throw money at it occasionally. 32 MPG on a run 7 mpg when cold around town.

I spent £20 in fuel today doing the trip in my Alfa so i am used to being poor..

See Bornite Identity's thread for the sensible answer. An Avensis will just keep going on, and on, and on if you look after it.

However we all know a Rover 75 is what you need. Even the V6s are relatively economical. They are absolutely perfect for munching miles.

Edit: See, Clayts has already beaten me to it.

A crv won't be any better on fuel than an alfa. My boss got rid of his partly due to economy (and partly because it was a bit fucked)

Relatively economical you say, where as my v6 certainly isnt

Tbh i am torn between spending my budget or less and getting another project/weekend toy as well.....decisions

Avensis a good shout as my neighbour has a mk1 1.8 and it just seems to keep going

If that's the case I'd get something cheap but unburstable like the aforementioned avensis and spend the change on something daft...

I really like Octavias but whenever I've been searching for a cheap estate I've never found the right one.  They seem to keep their values above my Maximum Price searches - that or the owners just hold on to them forever.  The ones that have fallen within the shite budget have been total no-nos (rusty, written-off, or otherwise buggered).

I'd suggest a Mondeo.  If you're into Saabs and Alfas you'll be shaking your head at this moment - just like I used to before I drove some - but they are genuinely excellent cars and there are so many about that you're bound to stumble upon a cheap/decent one without too much searching.

I was nodding actually as i have had a couple of mk2 v6`s but a mk3 2.0 titanium does seem a good shout...estate would do nicely sir

2004> Saab 9-3 auto like mine? 150bhp 180lb/ft - mine has returned over 35 to the gallon over 50k miles. mine has been very reliable.

Bonus shite points for 'its a vectra m8'

Tend to be well priced too.

By my (possibly dubious) maths you do 11,750 miles a year in the Alfa at 20mpg you will spend £3,204.99 p.a. on fuel if petrol stays at £1.19 a litre.

If you buy a diseasal car that does 40mpg you will spend £1,642.56 p.a. doing the same distance assuming diesel stays at £1.23 a litre.

So you will save £1,562.43 per annum so if you spend £5k on a car it will take you 3.2 years to break even on fuel costs alone (less any money you get for selling the Alfa of course).

Feel free to check my calcs here but I think I've worked that out correctly.

Not trying to suggest you don't buy something else but its food for thought as its not a massive saving if the new car costs loads more than the car it replaces.

My Chrysler Delta (see Modern Shite / For Sale pages...) would almost be spot on for this, I bought it for motorway mile-munching and it will get 70mpg on a run with a bit of care, unfortunately it's a manual diesel though... it's £3750

...without any worry about mileage depreciating a new car that many seem to fall into the trap of.

Hence a car that has long passed the stage where depreciation has ceased to mean anything. It does start to look like a diesel automatic that will fit your bill. Would a Peugeot 406 or 407/407SW do the business?

I did look at that and i like quirky looks but manual is a no go for me as i said left knee issues.....shame

I really dislike the look of the 407 but the 406 is a handsome looking thing and i will admit to looking at diesels even though i have never owned one and said i never will but would just under 12k miles per year suit a diesel?

12000 miles a year is nothing to a diesel.

I run a 2003 VW Bora TDi for work. That one is coming up to 140,000 miles as I write and does 10-12,000 miles a year; hardly scratches the surface of its durability. I average 40 to 45 mpg in town, and 60 to 75 on long runs. The oil and filter gets changed every 6000 miles or earlier if I can manage it. Market value nowadays is only about £500, if that, so cheap as chips.

Would it be to little for a diesel though,i hear horror stories of dpf`s failing but i have no knowledege of diesel engines at all...

On my experience, no. The modern diesel is a tough old thing; it'll handle however near or far you drive it. I've not had the DPF take a holiday in the Bora, and even the cambelt has lasted longer than recommended.

It has to be a Toyota. Avensis is a good shout, Camry would be an almost better one if you can find one (think cheaper Lexus), otherwise this model of Corolla is ideal if masses of internal space isn't essential:

Of course if you insist of spending £5000 there is always Lexus

This Corolla for example has 41000 on the clock and is retailing at £1200.
