Cheers Dan, would it not fail though on having an orange side light?

Yes, I’ve just edited my post to tell you how to correct that! Sorry!

IIRC my parents' Land Rover Discovery 2 had sidelights inside the amber indicator lenses on the front.

I have a few orange lenses off various things in the shed. I'll see if I can bodge something this afternoon, then get a more permanent fix .

These are the RHD rectangular headlight units American cars tend to need. These ones contain the combined sidelight bulb holder and socket.

You can then use a standard H4 headlight bulb, use the built in sidelight unit which gives you white light.

Then simply use the existing indicator with amber bulbs as the indicator only.

Remove the sidelight wires from your combined indicator lamp, reroute them to the new headlight mounted sidelight.

These are the above headlights being fitted to my US Volvo headlight units. You can see the sidelight in one of the pics.

They are classed as marker lights. The sidelights are built into the dip/main headlamps.

Someone just put plain bulbs in them when they should have all orange. (Orange side lights, orange indicator). It's not been legal here to have white turn signals on cars made after 1967.

How about this? Get a couple light holders, drill a couple holes in the back of the indicator lens and fit standard 5W capless bulbs for the side lights and leave the front indicators wired up to orange 21W?

The color changing LED's do work but they need a resistor in parallel to keep the flash rate correct and the side lights are that OMGXENON metal-halide bluish white, which really clashes with standard filament headlights.

Incidentally, thought Fed-spec sealed beam headlights were an MoT fail because they don't meet UK glare standards?

Damn good result on the MoT though

Brilliant result on the MOT

confused though as it must have had a test or two here previously, maybe a more relaxed tester in those cases?

I mentioned that to the tester. Last mot was 2016. He said it should have failed.

I'm now snarled up domestic duties until about 4. Would love to get a pass before the weekend.

Depends on the tester. Mine should have been a fail every year as the sidelights are not visible when switched on on their own. Mine are combined with the round headlight which is hidden behind the vacuum headlight doors.

The doors will only open once the dip beam is switched on.

Technically it’s a fail as the sidelight is on but behind the door so can’t be seen! Nobody has yet failed it on that however!

That's not a bad result at all....... I'm not sure how it works over here as the yanks seem to have standard lighting. Same old flashing sidelights.

Gotta be honest, all that gravel and a tank like that, I'd be re-enacting every 70s8

80s cop chase scene of ever!

Good luck on the retest (any idea when you'll make it back there?)

Edit to add - obviously you wouldn't need to slow any movie down as it would be slow enough in real time, safety matters!!!!

MOTs on any old shite and especially Yank stuff can be a laugh.  I managed to find a place with a bloke about my age - so unlike some of the young lads he knew not to expect a headlamp flasher, hazard lights, remote bonnet release, and to know the dip/main switch is on the floor on my AMC.   It'll be exempt this year though.

Mine had apparently been through a number of MOTs with illegal red rear indicators before I got it, but I fitted a similar setup to Drum's as no-one in the UK expects red indicators (inspite of them being legal for older chod) and it's dangerous.

Mine has the mod for sidelights in the front lights so that the front indicators can be tango'd.

The most unspectacular MOT fail in history.

Anytime laddie.

I took it out on private* roads to test the brakes.attachicon.gif20180405_125843.jpg

attachicon.gif20180405_130702.jpg

The handbrake wasn't doing much so I had a look at the shoes.

attachicon.gif20180405_135140.jpg

Worn but not worn out.

The handbrake only operated the driver's side rear wheel. Adjustment is on the cable at this balancing plate.

attachicon.gif20180405_141104.jpg

The rear left got quite hot for a while on the way home from Errol but there was no sign of binding.

Hand brake working ok now but I'll see what the MoT man says tomorrow.

I like the no wheel trim look.

Given the fact it weighs as much as a russian trawler and has 120 hp I am surprised it has brakes.

Downhill it'll pick up quite a bit of speed. Gravity will likely accelerate it faster than the engine would ever manage to.

Very unspectacular fail and all the more frustrating for it.

I've been messing about with some spare parts so that I might get a pass while I'm waiting on those lights dan linked to arriving.

I think I've missed my vocation as a car designer. Going for a bit of yank meets commie with these Moskvich parts.

I wonder what the MoT man would say if I turned up with this modification?

Only joking.

I'm halfway through fixing a bracket to the bumper for a slightly more secure temporary fix.

Is a side repeater required?

If first used on or after April 1 1986, yes.

Don’t bother with a side indicator, your cars too old to need them.

That gaffer taped on job looks superb! Very Autoshite!

In an effort to warm up relations with the Russians, I brought communist and American representatives to the negotiating table. Through intermediaries, Vlad gave the go ahead for the Moskvich lights to provide forward indication for the Yank machine.

It might be an ugly marriage of convenience and will no doubt be short lived, but the temporary arrangements have seen the big oil burner pass its test.post-5582-0-57096200-1523131637_thumb.jpg

This is so bloody cool.

Well done on the MOT.

Truer words were never written.

However, being locked in my dungeon is much more pleasant than you might think.

At least it won't suck all the joy and happiness out of you, which a Diesel inevitably will.

You can keep your v8 petrols and their slipped liners, it's diesels all the way, I should have dropped a 200tdi in that p38...smiley face.

Costs so far amount to 60p for a bulb and 50* to the gallon = budget motoring.

Might have to have a look at the alternator. Goes from 12.6v to 13.1v running.

I'm going to change the oil. The book says to use SAE30. Would thus stuff kill it?post-5582-0-93385700-1523177662_thumb.jpg

I think even the man of junk would gladly roll that beauty, it’s superb!
