Scruffy Bodger
Distance test = see how far you can throw the fucking thing. Used to do it with VV's. Variable Ventruris! What a load of crap they were. Auto-choke bollox. Weber swap and a choke cable on my old Cortina years ago and what a difference it made. The Reverend Bluejeans
pandamonium
Well, the carb is rebuilt now, ready to go back on. Unfortunately I've damaged the plastic spacer thingy that goes under, so I was wondering if I could get away with not putting it on and just using the new gasket? Any thoughts? lisbon_road
I think it'll get too hot and you will get fuel vapourising. You could try it though. How is it damaged? Can it be repaired or does someone on here have another one?
pandamonium
I scraped some of the surface off when removing the gasket.

lisbon_road
I'm with bub on that. It is there to stop heat transfer and the surface might need to be smooth, but the actual depth isn't critical.
pandamonium
Ok, good call. I'll set to it tomorrow and get it smooth-ish
pandamonium
In other news, tidied up the steels, as i like the utilitarian look. I've also put some rust killer on the rusty bits and cleaned up the grey plastic. Absolutely not. No, no, no. No. This car is so ugly that it's beautiful again. In the blue I remember a lot of these being when I was a kid. It's wonderfully hideous and so it should remain! purplebargeken, oldcars, Uncle Jimmy and 1 other

Felly Magic
The only way this could be any more bASe is if it was a 3 door estate, needs a set of pie dish wheel trims though, but it wouldn't surprise me if they are completely unobtanium now oldcars

That's what every other 80s Astra/Cavalier will end up with. That is following the trend. Why not just bloody drive it when it's running well? pandamonium, Jams, oldcars and 1 other

Ghosty
Has t'log book turned up yet? DVLA seem to have their heads up their arses atm (is it because 18 plates were out in March?). I've had the Prelude for 3 weeks now and there's no sign of the V5 yet. Astra is looking good, I can just about remember these and the Bedford vans being everywhere. I don't feel that grille looks quite right without BEDFORD going across it in that wonderful '80s font.

I guess if you did it by hand then it might be in a big pile at the DVLA waiting to be processed. If you did it online, it should really be back by now. pandamonium
V5 arrived a few days after I collected it. This car is not getting modified, and my main goal is to get it running smoothly and looking tidy.I can't rule out it becoming available again once I've done that though, as I have a short attention span! pandamonium
Well, put it all back together . ... And it started!Ran well, until it came off auto-choke. Then it cut out. Would restart fine, but not idle. If i manually reactivated the choke, it would run again, until you blip the throttle and then it drops the choke off and cuts out. Back to the drawing board. plasticvandan
Has the mixture been weakened off to compensate for a non functioning auto choke/emissions?
