Either he knows the clutch is fucked or he's a fucking Berk who cannot drive during winter. You could always ask him to demonstrate the clutch isn't slipping.

If the clutch is shot, could be worth bidding him £150 for the parts on it. Banger racer would give you that for what's left of it.

He won't go less than £300 it seems. How do we know the clutch if knack'd, has he told someone that?

Posted

I think it has been described as being high. Weren’t the early ones cable? Possible adjustment job, or fucked, big difference.

I'm minded to say he's just nervous. He says we can go to a car park (how generous) but unless I can really get it up to speed and up to temperature, i'm out.  I just don't need it the car, and my tolerance for people can often be quite low!

Probably he might have a different tack if on the test drive you identified the clutch was slipping. What's his alternative? £150 over the bridge.

Lack of a test drive suggests to be there's something seriously up with it. Can't understand his anxiety, its a £300 car not a 1948 Hispano Suiza.

Why are so many deals on extended to the point that they never happen?

Sorry dude.  I've read that 4 times and I still don't understand the question.

Maybe the guy has no faith in a random persons driving ability, I wouldn't be letting anyone drive my car this crap weather either, think of it this way someone smashes it hes not going to get any money at its value either from the buyer or the insurance, wait for a bit better day and test drive it then

Update.  I'm allowed to drive the car if he comes with me (expected) whilst I leave my car at his (expected) once I've given him the cash (unexpected).

In a perverse way, I quite like him.  God loves a trier.

"Bring the cash with you".

"I did yesterday - remember? When I wanted to (twice) drive the car with a view to buying it.

It's a fantastic insight to the other side of cheap cars (ie buying them).

I really really hope the clutch is good on this, it needs to be part of the AS Fold. Good luck Bornite!

I'd like to think this Mondeo was the showroom piece at Allen Ford, that would explain the long interval of manufacture date. and date of first registration. It looks as though it's still got it's original windscreen as the chassis number is etched on that too.

Have faith!

I'm looking forward to the collection Fred.

Like I say PM me if there's anything you aren't sure about on these.

How annoying. Car looks a beauty, seller sounds difficult.

When I bought my Panda 100hp the seller said he'd drive us to a quiet industrial estate so I could have a go. I thought I'm going to need to drive it further than round a building to spend 2k..... When I took over he immediately saw I wasn't ragging it and that I was being careful and duly invited me to carry on. Got a good decent test drive in the end and ended up buying it. Perhaps this guy will do the same?

Posted

So if you don't buy it, he just hands the cash back?

What is the purpose of him holding the money during the test drive?

A trier? He's definitely trying!

I was once not allowed to drive a 205GTI myself on the test drive. Something something insurance bollocks something. So he took me out in it, 4 or 5 miles and didn't use 3rd gear once. 1-2-4-5 every time.

A bit like when you sell a bike, you bin it, you bought it.

But it's insured. Assumedly. I don't think BI is the type of person to drive a car without insurance.

If you break something on display in a shop, it's an accident and nobody can make you pay for it.

If you had a genuine accident in a car on a test drive, the insurance will sort it.

I can understand seller recitence if it's high performance/high value etc but "test pilots" as he would no doubt term prospective buyers would seek out something higher performance than a 1.6 mondeo. Then again he might just be very cautious given the recent weather.

Sometimes though on a test drive you do need to beast it a bit. The Mondeo diesel I had would bring the glow plug light on upon hard acceleration. Wouldn't find that out pootling round Morrison's car park.

Whose insurance? I don’t know any other than trade that will insure for any car fully comp even those not owned by the policy holder, and I wouldn’t be taking a hit on my insurance if I was selling a car and someone test drove it and pranged it. And it’s £300, probably £250 excess so the insurance won’t sort it.

For sheer comedy value, take it to 4000 rpm and side step the clutch off the driveway.

Ask if he's happy for an engineers report on the car prior to drawing up exchange of contracts.

If you have other-car insurance on your policy, they might well consider it invalid if you handed cash over and effectively bought the car before a prang. It doesn't cover cars you own.

Anyway, never heard of anyone demanding this in a £3000 car let alone a £300 one.

Love this. I think that door dent would come out with some pdr. I would love to go all two bucket wrongun on this.

But the cover for other cars is 3rd party only, not fully comp -they pay out for the car/ person/ kitten holding nun you hit, not the person who owns the car you were driving. So as I said before, they wouldn’t pay out.

Do understand about 'no cash, no drive' to an extent. If someone crashed it they could just say they didn't want it and leave him high and dry, insured or not. I'd go and meet him again and sound him out, he's probably a decent bloke underneath his worrying.

The clutch will be a bastard though, never mind cables or anything.

Also been reflectively thinking that Hendry would have been basically owning this thread with his memory for details on specs. I did wonder if it ended up being bought we could even call it Hendry in dedication, but also wondered if that was too weird.

I obviously don't mind being a weirdo but I know there are lines to avoid crossing.

AFAIK the cable was up to about 94. These do have quite a high clutch anyway, if its at the top of its travel though its fucked. Could have had a new one in anyway, probably last 100-120k with care.

Timing belt you could diy it, just need the plates to hold the slots in the end of the cams assuming you haven't a medley of screwdrivers that will do the same.

Make sure its not pissing coolant out of the water pump or the thermostat housing.

Were they self adjusting or did they have the bigish knurled plastic adjusters like earlier ones?

The same thought had crossed my mind. I also continually misread Hendry's name on posts as 'Hendy', purely because of this lot.

Guess it's up to whoever buys it - if the seller ever stops arsing around and demanding dibs on Bornite's firstborn before he's allowed to turn the key, or something.

That said, someone did take my uncle's Maxi out for a test drive, and wiped out the front wing bringing it back into the driveway after. My uncle made them pay full asking price, but then he was a big lad working as a bouncer at the time... I fancy he could have got a bit part in any gangland film going. He normally drove Jaaaags (Mk2/S-Type/Mk10s were favorites) so dunno what he was even doing with a Maxi.

Deffo ideally brakes, clutch, gearbox etc should all be worked a bit just to ensure anything iffy is highlighted. I probably just look like a dick stomping on the brakes etc

OBV it's £300 or whatever so whilst being realistic it's also worth knowing what your letting yourself in for.

This place is class. There is always some on each thread that knows the motors inside out. Brilliant.
