So i ended up going with a mate instead of the mrs cos she thought we would have a FTP  caught the midnight ferry to Dunkirk and had a slow drive through Belgium to near the border with Lux,met the owner a real nice chap who fed and watered us .Then we had a better look at the van, screen is bolloxed as is a side window and it runs bad due to a pierberg carb :-( oh and the brakes are sticking on,im starting to have second thoughts but ive got too much in it already to walk away.So we try to free brakes and clean plugs ect and load the van

I was worried about the drive back because the transit looked huge compared to the smiley but apart from the hills no problem,we stopped at every services to check things and every time people were taking pics or asking about it,met a local who says him and his friend have loads of spares :-D was worried about getting on the ferry but they hardly looked at it,just over 800 miles and im knacked

What a tick-box posting!    Collection contraption, Fuego, Alpine, Munga.....And that Topo photo needs to be calendar'ed.   A late German friend of mine used to come over to Beaulieu in a Transit just like that, too.  GR8 memories.

That's fantastic and a defo calendar shot. A Mk3 (or whatever they're called) Transit towing an old Transit that's been painted by a highlighter pen.

A man after my own heart! Is that running a V6? I spy a bullnose and you said carb?

What are the plans for it?

Nice rig!! What a van. Looking forward to the long term project thread.

Phoar. That highlighter Transit gave me strong feelings when it popped up on the tat thread, so it's fantastic to see it on its way over to these fair shores! Well done to all those who made it happen; the cracking atmospheric scrapyard pics are just further scrummy cherries on this delightful big chodvan cake. Kudos!

What a great tat hoard! I wonder what was in front of that Alpine, either drove off or disintegrated overnight and blew away? :)

Posted

not trying to 'claim the credit', but did you spot it when I posted in in the tat thread, or were you already on the case?

Glad you've got it regardless!!

Sweet! Another early Transit, welcome to the club!

Can’t wait to see more about it...

yeah its a 2.0 v6,ex Luxembourg fire dept,it had a big water tank in the back ,they got the water from a lake. The paint although badly faded was original Lux FD luminous  orange.Plans are repair wings and lower rear quarter, sort brakes and lights ,rebuild original carb,MOT then rolling resto

Lower rear quarters turn up fairly regularly on ebay, I think I paid about £35 for my pair and one is a genuine one, keep an eye out on the auctions rather than the hideous prices that people are asking as buy it nows.

I think Central Panels are expanding their range a bit too.

Check the inner skin of the rear valance too, mine needed patching up this time as the design is crap and they fill with mud and salt....

The first three photos in the photo post caused a minor trouser accident.

Alpines and Fuegos?  Phwoar.

It looks really good underneath, just needs a good clean up and painting, thats a good price for the quarters

That's one heck of a tow rig! Nice spots too.

What is the rig? Many tyres, much confuse.

Duff rear axle or eleventy million year old tyres that will burst into flames at 10mph? Does that kind of thing not attract the attention of the constabulary?

After your message you were en route - sat by the batphone - just in case etc... - but sooooooo glad to read it all went well and you had a great trip.

Looking forward to seeing this progress.

Best of luck

The skates make it much easier to tow,it was a bit of a carry on getting the skates fitted and we had to take off 2 of the rear wheels, only seen 2 gendarmes and they never even looked 8)
