Anyone got any ideas? Dodgy boost control solenoid, sticky turbo vanes? Or wires starting to go in a sensor or something?

Think you need to buy a replacement car, it sounds fucked to me!

I might buy a replacement car but not for this mondeo...

I've always dreamed of owning two mondeos. No wait, that was a nightmare...

Hopefully it’ll settle down and behave itself now!

The Nightmare on Privat Drive or the solenoid?

Lol but seriously, hopefully. Absolutely everything else seems to have been fixed according to the history apart from some trailing arms so fingers crossed...

Well the cluster switched off while driving today and I lost indicators.

Looks like the cluster refurb is now an immediate priority.

Before you do that, plug the ELM427 in, next time it craps out try switching it between the CANBUS switch, sometimes that will identify if there is an issue with the BCM module, also put it through Forscan, potential damp/corrosion in the BCM needs to be ruled out before spaffing £200 on a recon dash.

Thank for the advice but I don't have forscan or ability to switch canbus using elm.

Gonna have to hope its cluster and if not, then worry about BCM.

Although will check BCM for any obvious signs of damp and corrosion.

ELM427 adapter is £14 on eBay then free download of Forscan. Without that your ability to accurately diagnose faults etc is significantly curtailed unless you’ve some fairly high end software.

Although these recon places have a rig to test the equipment on they’re not infallible. I had a cluster repaired and it turned out it wasn’t the actual fault but they still turned round and said ‘faulty cluster’ we’ve rebuilt it you!

I need to clarify.

I don't have a laptop to run forscan.

I could get forscan lite for android. Unsure if the lite version would do the job.

Hitting dashboard does resolve issue. Which suggests its the cluster.

Car owes me little. Bout 100 quid more than I get back from bridge.

Have to think carefully about spending boatload, that might not fix issue and losing a lot of money.

Where in the country are you?

Just south of Bath. I agree with @sierraman. It needs code reading before I throw money at it.

I will find a garage locally. My usual place does not really do moderns like this.

I could post you my laptop and elm327 adapter if you were to be able to post it back next week?

Thats a very generous offer, but don't want to risk your goodies getting nicked in the post.

If I can't get it sorted locally, I may have to drive to you, without speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge or indicators.

Sat nav and hand signals should get me there though lol

You'll be welcome for definite if you do make it here!

Just don't expect me to know a lot, but definitely willng to plug in and push buttons, so to speak.

Let's hope that doesn't get quoted out of context 😅

The cluster takes minutes to remove, in all honesty you are as well reading it yourself. A lot of garages like to run you round the houses so to speak, they’ve no idea what it is but they’ll rinse you for £50-60 to send you in the wrong direction.

So the plan to get the Mondeo in the garage and out again before Wifey's work today didn't quite go to plan.

Garage say its not the solenoid, there's a boost leak somewhere but they've not found it.

Also they say there's a crack in the sump. They are getting a revised quote together so the Mondeo is staying with the garage... and it begins.

So Wifey is away in the Passat and I'm doing family long haul in the Volvo 740 who leaks coolant into the foot well.

All Mk4s come fitted with an undertray that'd bite the dust before the sump gets cracked.

mondeo had a dpf clean... (whatever that means) and it’s put the engine management light on again! Car drives faultlessly... but diagnostic reader states dpf below threshold value....

Knock the lamp out on Forscan, reset values. If it’s running ok then I’d worry about it come MOT time.

My philosophy with these things is that if some bad stuff was going off it’d run like shit.

Had an odd one today with a 2.0 tdci Galaxy powershift. Lost drive and shut off. No starter, and wouldn't come out of park.. stuck Forscan on it and there were loads of codes for the instrument cluster. All cleared except one- lost comms between ICM and TCM.  Couldn't spend too much time on it, but I didn't think an instrument cluster would shut down the transmission, then the car? Dropped at a garage I know, so will chase up to see what they found.

I don’t know much about the galaxy but maybe it runs the immobiliser through the cluster like the Focus, the Mondeo doesn’t.

Did an oil and filter change change on mine.

Got a long haul tomorrow,2 1/2 hour drive to the port, catching the early ferry from Dublin ,then driving from Holyhead to North Norfolk.

Hopefully the old girl will stay going, and not leave me stuck on the hard shoulder somewhere! 😕

Always get very nervous before a long drive, not looking forward to it at all.

They’re a very good car, much much better reliabilitywise over the Mk3, so much so I wouldn’t bother with a Mk3 unless it was giveaway money.

I have noticed quite a few of the 1.6 diesels dropping down to reasonable money, I don’t hear of many problems at all with these.

Really?  I'd've thought that the notoriously reliable* 1.6 HDI straining its little guts out to haul around the vast bulk of a Mk4 Mondeo would be a recipe for disaster.

Thats lovely - my wife would love to keep her Mondy its been a great car and very reliable and about as economical as you can get! But she needs an Auto... I think she'd quite like the same car again in Automatic if I can find one (Mobility car coming soon)
