AS Communal MK4&5 Mondeo Thread

It’s not like the pins on the cluster of the Mk2 Focuses, where you can re-solder the dozen or so pins on the back it involves taking it apart which is a bit of a faff. What a great idea lead free solder was! Giving the dash a smack sometimes will identify loose terminals or a bad solder joint.

You really need Forscan to accurately diagnose it, I would imagine it will possibly point you, unhelpfully, in the direction of the BCM module that sits in behind the glovebox, on occasion there has been known to be corrosion in the terminals.

Hi, advice here please!

My elm327 as per @wuvvumrecommendation arrived, as has a Windows laptop.

Of course now ForScan won't recognise the adapter when I plug it in and switch on ignition and press the connect button.

Am I missing something?

Have you tried flipping the switch on the ELM cable?  IIRC for the initial connection to the car it needs to be in the correct position.

I've tried it in both positions and I've tried different connection option in forscan

Depends what version of Windows you have.  I don't recall having to install drivers when I downloaded Forscan, but then again that laptop had been used for diagnostics (with an assortment of cables) for several years before that so maybe it already had the drivers it needed.

OK. I'll download them according to that page then try...

I'm on a steep learning curve! But it's worth it not least as wifey loves the Mondeo.

Yeah you need to fuck about shifting the usb around a bit then try it on either can/bus switch. Is it saying ‘no wi-if?’

It says 'adapter not connected'

Next question: which connection type do I need?20210827_202434.thumb.jpg.9dc5de82488b682d7d0c7ea5e418c5c1.jpg

Which way up does the switch need to be?

20210827_202643.thumb.jpg.604624939e2eb75121659edf635021b1.jpg

Here is the error I get, the same when it's all connected as when nothing is connected. 20210827_202748.thumb.jpg.df9c7c3ffdb03f5b08647e14507b7362.jpg

Oops for some reason it's upside down.

You'll have to use COM port if it's wired and connected with USB. Did you get a disc with it?

You need the ELM 327 driver in your laptop, then it should auto recognise the adapter. The switch position doesn't matter. It will tell you to switch it if need be.

I'm far from an IT expert, but used Forscan for years. You'll need to go on and get a (free) licence once your hooked up.

OK I'm in. I had to close forscan then open it and it worked in Com as @Barry Cadesaid, but only for a particular switch position.

I've not come across needing a licence yet, but I will as and when that arises.

I'll have to warm the engine up tomorrow for dpf functions as I'm home alone with the baby and I've had a few beers... but I only found a regen button, are there any other dpf tools?

Best just spend some time and have a play. I don't think you can modify anything without a licence so no worry there.. unlike FOCcUS.. 😌

Familiarise yourself with all the acronyms,  there are a lot! EcM ,BCM,PCM, etc..

There is an option in one of the menus called Reset DPF Learned Values (or similar), that's the one you want.

There’s got to be about £30 worth of duct tape holding that together.

So the news here is good, I had a play and reset the dpf values.

I'm curious to find out how to tell how clogged or not the dpf is.

Anyway I managed to delete all codes, I'm sure they'll reappear though. There's some sensor in a wheel failing, it occasionally causes the traction light to come on.

There's the diluted oil, so I'll have to change the oil again but I think, well I hope that the dpf will start behaving now.

May not be a sensor, the rear left wiring loom to the ABS sensor can wear through,

May be worth looking at that, easy enough fix.

Yes I'll have a look. But for now at least i went for a drive. No smoke, no lights, no coal burning smells!

There's an easy way to tell.  Go for a (reasonably long) drive, then plug Forscan in and bring up "distance since last regen attempt" - if that equals the distance you've just driven then you know it's sorted.  I think it gives the reading in km but it's easy enough to convert.

You should see the fuel consumption improve as well now it's fixed.  I was struggling to get 40mpg out of it when it was regenning all the time (although the computer thought I was doing more than that), it went up to near 50 on a run once I reset the DPF.

Yes it was doing less that 40 mpg.

OK ill have a look at the distance covered but it's acting very different since reset, no smoke being the obvious change.

One of mine refused to regen the DPF under any circumstances!

How often do these things regen?

Never had a diesel that regens before, so don't know what to expect.

There’s no signs popping up or anything, exhaust sounds a bit deeper and the Mpg drops whilst it’s regenerating. That’s it.

Sometimes I don’t notice the regen as it happens on the motorway.

I’ll generally notice it when coming off the motorway and for a few minutes. As sierraman says, deeper exhaust note and lower mpg if you watch the actual mpg gauge.

So update with our Mondeo, oil level not rising above what it had risen to.

I'll stick the computer on it later and check but I think we are on top things for now.

It looks a bit smoky when viewed from the outside but it's not trying to be a red arrow any more so that's good.

I'll give it a good dose of diesel exhaust cleaner fuel additive soon.

Those DPF cleaners don’t do much to be honest unless applied straight on to the DPF. Best diesel additive I found for general use in the fuel system was CT60 from ECP.

Forget Redex etc, ok for old lawnmowers but it belongs in the 1950’s.

I've got archoil D-Max 6400, I already have it so it's going in, can't hurt can it!

How much of a money pit would this be?

I have to admit the Mondeo is a decent thing, maybe I need one as well as Wifey...

@brownnovait's near you... oh dear someone stop me!
