I do think how much money it cost having two completely different dashboards for higher and lower spec models.

Oh yes. It was important though, to know you were really lording it up because I had a glove box instead of a little shelf thingy. I had indeed made it in life!

Was the glovebox the only difference? I can hardly remember my old Ghia dash?

Dan, yes they are Ghia bumpers. I got them years ago when there were still loads about and put them on about 2 years ago when the metal one at the back was nearly a giant hole kept together by plastic.

Rest of the car is really good as it's a German built one. Though I have fixed the inner wings and that corner (still in red oxide).

Glove box and heater controls, on the bigger dash, we're the difference in low and high spec. The radio is above them as opposed to being in a centre console. But there were tons of other stuff different that must have cost more in the end than it was worth.

That sounds about right now from memory.

Mine had blue velour seats with the big original style headrests (which were very similar seats to those in my Granada Ghia x). It had a fair bit in it for a Fiesta of that age, it must have cost a fair bit new.

I don't think mine was a German one! It was horribly rusty. Everywhere around or behind the plastic trim and bumpers was rusty. It had a black death tide mark around the entire lower half of the car as the sills were hanging and the door bottoms were almost all made of filler.

The top half of it was lovely though, the metallic Paris blue still looked perfect and had a good shine still and the interior was immaculate.

I've checked my old reg on dvla site and it was scrapped bu the look of it in 2003 so I was it's final owner. I traded it in for an H reg Orion 1.4glx with a local car dealer. Big mistake that was as the Orion was a complete piece of shit in every way!

The only reason I traded the Fiesta in was because the MOT was due soon and the clutch bearing was very noisy. I didn't have the room, tools or know how at the time to fix it. A shame really. I wish I'd put it in a garage somewhere instead.

7am and a nobber on his phone ran into the back of me. Towbar took the hit so my shitter will most likely be written off for two tiny scratches on the back bumper.

Necks a bit stiff now too.

The car I taught myself to drive in (off the road) was exactly the same age and spec. At the time it was about 8 or 9 Year old and covered in rust. Massive hole in the floor behind the drivers seat where a bit of string round the sill holding the handbrake cable up to name but one.

Got a Spanish mk1 in the garage that's not the greatest. The boot floor is a patchwork and it needs new rear arches and the corner behind. Might get one one day.

Why is there grass where the headlining should be?

Because the headlining fell off.

I shouldn't have been so hard on my old one really in hindsight, by the time it was scrapped it was almost 20 years old, Nov 1984 - 2003 wasn't a bad life for any car, even nowadays!

I bought it as my 2nd car not long after I got my Capri to just run around in while the Capri was getting done up. It was quite unusual as a 1.3, most people my age then had the 950/1.1 but it really did belt along! You could throw it about a bit too.

It used to idle a bit rough (VV carb!) but ran perfectly well once warm. It was the bodywork that let it down really, there were patched, patched patches all over the sills and you could feel them all over the inner sills and floors under the carpets.

I once leant it to my mum as her Hyundai Accent was in the garage and she hated it! She had a right go at me too as the handbrake was just about useless and she'd tried doing a hill start!

My mate had an F reg Fiesta 1.1 Festival special edition at the same time, his one looked lovely in red. It was a really good looking car aside from a small dent in the corner of the rear pillar. A few months later it went for MOT and it turned out it was dangerously rotten and very poorly welded already in places.

My old B reg Ghia outlived that one, but we actually went to watch banger racing in my B reg and his old Festival was out on the track!!

I'd like another mk2 tbh but you never see them anymore. The last ones I knew of locally were a D reg popular plus around the corner owned by an old boy. That disappeared about a year ago.

And there was a G reg mk2 van running around too but that disappeared about the same time.

By this time, even an L had the better dashboard:

Only Popular and Popular Plus buyers were punished with the basic one.

Is the orange handle to adjust the column, or a bonnet release?

Bonnet release on all Fords of that era.

I thought it was a bit weird to have an adjustable column in an 80s Fez....

I don't understand why bonnet releases have to be so awkward in most cars. That height ^^^ is just about perfect (although you'd want it off to the side in cars that did have column adjusters) - you're not going to catch it accidentally, but neither do you have to bend double and grope around in the footwell for it for ages before realising that it's on the other side anyway.

I like the column adjustment in 90s Vauxhalls, the lever sticking out below the indicator.

It makes a WICKED "boing" sound if you twang it the other way.

Girl at work has Micra cabrio and was expounding upon when she might next drive with the hood down... June, possibly?

So this evening I did walk up where the CJ was parked, put the top down and drove home. Didn't even have my woolly hat.

The season has begun.

Picked up 3 litres of 15w40 diesel engine oil on the way home from work for £5.97.  Cheapest I've been able to buy oil in a while.  Would have bought more but that's all they had.  I'll go for a snout round the other branches tomorrow to see if I can nab any more.

Roys of Wroxham, so probably completely useless to anyone who doesn't live within about 15 miles of Norwich, soz.

I bloody love Roys and his unending desire to take over the whole town.

Is Miss Roy still going? And Roys Toys?

I bet it was a tough meeting where they finally had to let McDonalds use their own logo instead of branding it RoyDonalds.

I have only had experience of one Spanish built one, it was a gold 1.1 L I bought it as an m.o.t fail from a mate for £20 as I needed a few bits and bobs for doug, the thing was rotten as buggery but it had lots of useful spares which kept a couple of mk2 on road for local folks.

I showed mrs fp the picture of your pop plus, she loves it
