Cavcraft Posted June 11, 2018 Author Posted June 11, 2018 Some sodding sensor (behind the dash) set the ABS light off, plus a CV cover or something and £420 later it's through the MOT... Obvs. like it now needs a sodding coil pack or something, and they muttered about the timing chain tensioner. clayts450, DeeJay, cobblers and 7 others 10
Lacquer Peel Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Pretty sure these have a cambelt. Looks bonny, these TTs have aged well. Sigmund Fraud and Cavcraft 2
Lacquer Peel Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Belt and chain apparently. Ugh, why though? Cavcraft 1
cobblers Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Its a cambelt up to the top and a chain between the cams IIRC.I've got a new coil here, but they're only £12 so by the time I've posted it there's no real saving to be had. These have really aged well. Back when I was mega skint I fitted a new convenience module to one of these for a mate of my mums and had to pretty much dissassemble the whole interior from the front seatbelts back, and then code the new unit in with a VAG COM. I think he gave me about £50 for a long days graft, but I drove it round the block twice to "test for rattles" and was happy enough with that really. Dick Cheeseburger, Dave_Q and Cavcraft 3

Cavcraft Posted June 12, 2018 Author Posted June 12, 2018 In the last 20 hours I’ve discovered: It’s faster than a 2008-ish A3 2.0 diesel It’s not as fast as a 900cc motorbike It got the first 30 yards on an A3 ‘S3’ and then the TT got served. It’s also a nice looking thing and goes very well, but by fuck is it dull. The Puma is far more fun to drive. Laseraligningfoofooflanges, purplebargeken, dome and 4 others 7
UltraWomble Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 Its a cambelt up to the top and a chain between the cams IIRC.A few manufacturers do that - not sure why - PSA with the 16 valve DW10 have that set up. Laseraligningfoofooflanges 1
Kiltox Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 Cav I have a set of the timing tools you’d need to work on the chain on one of these if you need them Cavcraft 1
rantingYoof Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 It’s also a nice looking thing and goes very well, but by fuck is it dull.. I think the marketing term for 'dull' is 'adequately competent'. Dick Cheeseburger and Cavcraft 2
New POD Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 Cheers....V5 new keeper's bit says 'TT Quattro (225BHP)'I fancy a little of that. Cavcraft 1

Cavcraft Posted June 16, 2018 Author Posted June 16, 2018 A collection of sorts (vendor is going to deliver) has been arranged. First up (as the wheels that were on it have been accounted for) it's time to reach for the first 5 stud wheel I found kicking about. Handily enough, it's the first one I found, was in the nearest car and is the right stud pattern. A clue, if you know what it's off... Split_Pin 1
Dick Cheeseburger Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 I don't dislike some Folksfarkenz, but that is just a little too dismal. Bloaty, rusty Vento (mkiii gLof)? Cavcraft 1

Dick Cheeseburger Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Aha! These are great at looking immaculate up top, whilst having no underside. Hope it's got a slice of ticket.

Sigmund Fraud Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 8-valver, for full shite points as well ! If those sill covers are not "structural", it's probably worth fixing up. Cavcraft 1
cobblers Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Lovely! I really rate Mk3 golfs, I had a NA 1.9D that was SE spec so it looked like a GTi, It was honestly one of my favourite cars ever. Rusty old bastard though. Cavcraft 1
timolloyd Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 I had a low mileage cared for 8v GTi like this one and it was probably one of the best all round cars I've had. I know they're boring/unreliable/slow/rusty etc etc but I reckon they qualify as proper shite. Unloved, cheap as chips but still useful to have around. Cavcraft 1
cobblers Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 I reckon you've only bought it as an engine donor to make the TT much slower and marginally less economical. HillmanImp, Cavcraft and Sigmund Fraud 3
Cavcraft Posted June 16, 2018 Author Posted June 16, 2018 Probably an omen, but he passed me a repair section that it 'might' need. Anyone got a set of cheap wheels for the thing in 5x100 flava?
spartacus Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Welcome to the world of MK3 GTi ownership. I don't think they're a bad steer. They're not particularly loved by the pineapple brigade, so there's less chance of being mistaken for one of them!It looks clean but as I'm sure you know those sill covers can hide more than a little welding.Mine uses a 'constant loss' oil system that prevents much of the subframe and underside from rotting. HillmanImp and Cavcraft 2
vaughant Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Mk 3 golf GTi gets a podium finish on the shittest cars I've ever owned, just so much worse than its predecessors AND successors, no mean feat. Always liked the vr6 though. Cavcraft and dome 2
