Hey Autoshite, i'm gonna take my 1952 Land Rover to a cr00z tonight after a year parked up - do I leave the roof on in case it rains/ thunders, or do i say #YOLO and leave it at home, then drive for an hour or so to the event with the screen down feeling like an absolute fucking champ? 

 

Driving an old Land Rover for an hour to something, that is a ten minute walk away, is the pinnacle of YOLO in itself.

No need to make it even more inconvenient by taking off roofs and folding screens.

Two of my neighbours have just gone out (in their 63 reg range rover) while I am enjoying a nice glass of something fizzy, cold and French on the terrace (my place doesn't have a garden, so I've made a patio out of my porch area). He told me they're off to beaulieu for a special evening commemorating Donald cambell's speed record - pre turbine. I've just checked and tickets were £110 each or a table for ten for £1000. I reckon he's on a company freebee - his boss is Lord Norman Foster I think (he's ex army anyway and does "something" in the city. Oh how the other half live! It's 6pm and according to the website the welcome to Mrs Cambell starts at 7. He's going to have to do 90 down the M3 to get there in time.

Modern car swappage.

I had a Juke delivered on Tuesday. I've just sent that back to Thrifty having increased the mileage by 3000% (admittedly it started on 25 miles) because National were due to deliver me a "Astra sized car" at 12:00.

 

So at 12:50 (grrrr) they rocked up in a Pug 2008 that was apparently full of diesel (if it is, the gauge is busted since it reads 7/8ths). However, it's actually not a bad car - the completely daft touchscreen entertainment system is still too complex - but it has enough gadgets, it's got enough poke, and it drives well enough since I'll be keeping this til October. It does have mood lighting in the roofliner though! I've decided to do some 7-word new car reviews because it feels like I've driven loads of the buggers.

 

Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost Titanium: Small, fancy, Makes chuffing noises. Bum warmers.

Peugeot 2008 Allure E-HDI: Pretty lights inside. Diesel. French Electronics. WCPGW? 

Polo S 60hp: Skeleton, masturbation, biscuit tin. Blanking plates galore.

Peugeot 208: Iffy build quality. Easily stained seats. Feminine. 

Nissan Juke dCI: Brown, lardy, shifts OK. Like a labrador.

In my absence the Boring (Bora tdi) has a new MOT, no work needed, just a couple of advisories for slightly worn suspension bushes. Not bad for a 15yr old motor with around 220k on it.

I know there are a few VAG haters out there but this car has been fantastic for me with only a couple of niggles over the 70k miles or so I've done in it.

Haven't been on this week much due to house move. Put the missus on car insurance for my Fiesta now that we're living together. She has had a licence for about 3 years (and used to rag around an '09 Vauxhall Combo on a work placement for a year), but hasn't driven for 2. Obviously was a little rusty with the clutch bite, but went a lot better on her 2nd drive, right up until she parked the front splitter on a load of concrete, d'oh! Fortunately not too much damage, but will need a new bumper and plate.

 

Week has ended on a bit of a sad note as my grandfather passed away this morning. He was 96 and had had a minor stroke earlier in the week too, and as much as anything we're relieved that he's not in pain anymore. Was a taxi driver pre-war before heading to Dunkirk, but in his latter years became the world's oldest teenager by trying to wind my Mum up at every opportunity much to my amusement.

Tonight I went to a banger race for the first time in years, this one was called siamese racing where a bigger car (namely a Mondeo or Cougar on carbs) drives underneath a bolted on Ka or Corsa which does the steering. It was pretty good fun actually, much more enjoyable than normal racing although they did keep flipping over easily.

This one had a early Fiat 126 on top.



We take a look around the pits and saw a few cars that were going to Swaffham tomorrow for the Cortina banger meet, this 2 door Cortina 1.3L was a shame but it was seriously rotten everywhere, as we're the 3 Capris with it.



This early Consul Capri was every well prepped, it looked quite rust free too but I think there was a lot of filler in it.



The worse though was this Sierra, my mate knew the car when it was still on the road, apparently it was a real minter, even the arches and door bases were mint. It was for sale for £1000 but after speaking to the racers it seems the chap died and the son wanted the car scrapped. Shame.

The rebel van has come back with piles of stuff destined for ebay and the car boot. It has taken on a bit of a list to port which probably has something to do with a few hundred kilos of bronze which are in the back!

Was a nice hoon in the 2CV actually, apart from rounding a bend to discover a 4x4 on my side of the road. He'd decided to cut a blind corner. Clever! He reacted very quickly and 2CVs are narrow, otherwise things might have been quite nasty. What a pillock.

I am posting on here whilst in a strip club. I can't stand these places but am on a boys night out so had to tag along. If I wanted to pay for something I couldn't touch I'd go to Duxford. Mmmm SR71.... Now I'd pay for THAT...

 

I have never really understood the appeal of strip clubs. Its like being in a restaurant and paying to have a really nice meal placed in front of you but not being allowed to eat it.*

 

 

* Unless you pay all of this months wages to eat it on your own away from your friends in a back room somewhere.  

 

Plus it might look Michelin star at first but its quite possibly a KFC with a bit of garnish.

Stupid question: Do stop/start equipped modern vehicles have anything special to do the stop/start or is it just a regular starter motor?

I've been bumbling around town in my 2008 today and it's OK but I can't help thinking that if it was mine'd be nervous about the starter giving up the ghost with all the effort. Even more of a concern when we're picking up these for £500 from eBay in 2035 after the starter has done millions of cycles.

 

Also, is it a genuine eco planet-saving move or a gimmick? What's the sort of values of emissions and money saved by turning the engine off for 5 seconds at a time? The Pug actually tots up per journey how much it's been off, today's journey of 20 miles in town was 1 minute 46 seconds of engine off instead of idling. What's fuel comsumption per minute of idle?

Allegedly, they do fit stronger starter motors. My theory is they fit them purely and only to get through the emission tests with flying colours.

The Insight hasn't got a starter motor! It uses the electric motor to start the car - instant restarts and no churning! Smug grin on face (wait for it to go wrong.... then see the grin upside down!).

Between the weight of the beefier starter motor and battery and the effort of replenishing the power used by the starter I bet the fuel savings are negligible or even negative. Also, I'm sure I'm not the only shiter who used to dream of having a car that didn't cut out every time you stop.

I used a Merc C220d hire car for about 4 months , and experimented with turning the start-stop off.

It averaged between 45 and 52 mpg over the 20,000 miles I had it .

When I did a week without start-stop it still showed 48 mpg, but it felt strange as I had got used to it going quiet every time I stopped. It was interesting to note that turning the wheel a couple of millimetres would start the engine.

I assumed it would have a giant fuck off lorry battery,but on investigating, I discovered a tiny little thing in the boot about the same size as an MX5 ie not much bigger than a motorbike. It might have had another one somewhere I suppose.

Well, the 106 rallye I went to look at that "won't need a lot for an MOT at all" will need at least a set of tyres, a weekend squirting metal at it (Front jacking points and a few bits on the chassis legs) and a cat fitting for the emissions. Definitely not with the £1100 he's got it advertised for in that state. Seemed an OK car though, apart from the hilariously awful job of patching the boot floor corners.

I told him I'd think about it and that is what I'll do.

 

As much as I would love to look out of the window at work and see a little red 106 rallye, I wouldn't want to hand over any more than £700 for it if I did decide it was worth bothering with so I don't reckon I'll be posting any action shots for me migging the frig out of it.
