I've managed to pull muscles in my upper back and neck and am now lying on the sofa, holding the laptop skyward in one hand and typing with the other. Not too bad a typing speed considering!

Vulg, if it would help, I could enquire at work about borrowing a hub, dropping a new bearing in and then trade it out for yours at your convenience?

It's official, The Shed hates me.

Bought new starter motor, off t'bay, got it fitted for 30 notes. Nice.

BUT: Matey says my flywheel is looking chewed and a replacement will ensure 100% lovliness.

Buy used one off Ebay, £60 (as opposed to £350 for a new one).

Ring gararge, advised I might as well get the clutch changed too. £60 later........

Car went in Tuesday, flywheel is damaged, and wrong, clutch is wrong.  They can get one, but I'm looking at £725 (for cash) fitted. Call to bank of mother.......

All done yesterday afternoon....EXCEPT starter motor not engaging, removed, deemed to be buggered.

Car still there......

At least it's at the garage so you can't kick it  ;)

I feel your pain though,  if it wasn't for SF and the new Cherry I'd be on a right downer about cars at the moment.

I'm not so certain it's the bearing, I think it's the balljoint.  I just haven't got the brain to do it just at the minute.  I will shout your way when I have some more brain spare, you seem to know what you're doing.

Arse, I've just got in from work to discover I've won a rebel van on ebay for £20, I have absolutely no where to put it....

Posted

Sort of, Its not like its got a working engine or wheels or anything.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Reliant-rebel-van-/291149376496?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=HZ%252F1hwTIK6%252BZuBfPsCmwVlmIodU%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

(I have all the front suspension spare, and an axle shouldn't be hard to find....

Storage and workspace remain an issue. My home garage is filled with the project coupe which is where the real energy should be concentrated to get it on the road sometime this summer. The free storage for the white coupe is about to run out which means I need somewhere to put it or I'll have to sell. I'd been hoping to keep it as a project for the future but i cant justify that for long if it costs too much to keep. The xflow rebel isnt ready to either live on the street or be sold, plus I cant really sell it for a decent price until its had some cosmentic and mechanical improvements, besides I've not had my fun out of it yet. My GTE and my Blue van are required for regular use. I technically have a garage free that can take this rebel but only if i can get rid of a scimitar chassis / engine  and a huge pile of junk which is currently languishing in there.

I have no real interest in this van I only really bid on it because it was at a silly low price.  But that said I'd like to see it saved and put back on the road. As it stands I can hopefully manage that without it a) taking too much time or B) costing too much. worst case secenario would be to break it but I don't really need the spares and its worth more as a roadworthy van.

If anyone wants to buy it off me feel free to make me an offer.

So you have a Rebel body shell with nowhere for it to go and a Scimitar chassis and engine, Whats easier* sectioning and lengthening a plastic box ,or shortening a steel chassis?

Rebel has a chassis.

Anyone got a Zenith 32IF carb kicking about. Mixture screw dropped out of mine and finding a replacement screw or full carb seems virtually impossible.

I've got a smaller carb that could go on to replace it but the Zenith gives R4s an entire 6 or 7 bhp increase which is a lot when you only have 40 odd or whatever to start with :)

Posted

There's a couple on international ebay for about 40 quid with free post to anywhere. Not sure if they will have mixture screws though.

Is the screw common to other ZF carbs?

I havent got the faintest idea what this carb looks like, but if you can sort me out with a picture or 3 and show where the mixture screw is, I will see what I can find - I will be at my local breakers yard at some point this weekend.

That would be ideal with the guts of an mx5 shoehorned in...

CND, I think you had unwittingly found the solution to your storage issues a while back. Allow me to remind you:

Due to overwhelming interest* in the cortina i'm going to bang it in for an MOT friday, in the hope a fresh ticket will bag a sale.

I've a funny feeling saturday will be spent welding and rebuilding brakes.

Funny feeling was accurate. Both front calipers binding, rear inner sills rotten, TRE rubbers split both sides, rear voids fucked, front and rear trail arm bushes both sides .........

There goes my weekend.

I've just been for a drive in the Cortina for the first time in a few weeks, It make look fantastic, get lots of waves and attention and go like a scalded cat but having done so many miles recently in the Acclaim and Civic it's really highlighted how abysmal the suspension is on the car, it's like trying to walk on stilts whilst pissed. 50mph on the dual carriageway really takes all your concentration to stay in a straight line and takes away the enjoyment from it.

I've been watching out for gas shocks on ebay for them, they don't seem to expensive at around £50 a pair but i keep missing the end of the auctions, I'm going to have to buy some before i start losing interest in the car i think.

I just bulk bought 3 BMW 3 seriesies. The guy I rent my lockup off had them clogging up the joint so sold me them in a bulk deal to clear some space. Why own 1 BMW when you can have 4.

The red one is a 318i. It's very smart, and quite rare in red, no rust and drives nice.

The JRG one is a 316i auto. 91k, 1 owner from new. Matching half leather (gold) interior with a mega high spec. New wings, currently running like a bag of shite after sitting still since christmas.

Currently hooked up to ODBII life support system to try to knock out the EML of doom

The silver one is a 320d. Full leather, bluetooth gubbins, rusty front wings just fitted with a new turbo.

The black 5 series is my one that's stuck down their trying to get it;s oil leak fixed (unsuccessfully)

It's an early '84 1.6 Ghia auto, genuine 43k miles, first owner for 12 years then it's current owner since 9/96 who stays about 100 yards down the road from the original owner. Last tested in 2009. Couple of grotty bits but it seems saveable. Runs and drives sweetly too and everything seems to work. The OSR wing is hysterically wobbed up but the rear inners and turrets are all sound. Front inner wings will need a tickle and it's needing a couple of plates here and there.

Don't think I was robbed for what I paid but I'll need to investigate further on a ramp.

doesn't look too bad at all that! Hopefully there'll not be too much grot hiding.

Did anyone see them restoring that RS1600i on Car SOS? Rot in all the usual places means everywhere.

Sounds good, when I first started working one of the bigger boys had an Orion Ghia and it seemed like a Ferrari next to my Metro! A few years later I had an '89 escort ghia 1.6 auto, it went well but it was thirsty for what it was!
