When I saw the location I thought that was my old 18/85! It's not, but it's local to me, and I've never seen that one.

Mine is sadly still under a cover on the driveway of the people I sold it to, it hasn't been on the road since I sold it.

Edit: There's a flipping Somerset next to it in the pictures as well! Bloody hell, I need to track this down.

Further edit: Having read the description, it's actually in Colchester. Ignore the above.

That's a relief, now I have a good reason to abstain from bidding on the Wolseley6. Fingers crossed for the Junkmeister.

I had a Wolseley 6 once - running out of fuel on the Kingston bridge is my abiding memory of it!

Not wanting to put you off in any way clearing myself to place a rival bid on it, win it and be the anti hero of this piece; are they the right indicators on the front?

Stripped the Sirion's faulty nearside caliper. Various problems. Looks like it all hasn't been apart for a very long time, though there's plenty of meat on the pads. Sliders were bone dry and caked in sticky, old copper grease, and the piston didn't seem too thrilled about moving either. Greased them all up and all seems ok, but the sliders were badly scratched and pitted. I think I'll replace them at some point. Might do the offside at the same time.

I think the problem is that the slider boot is only attached to the caliper carrier, not the caliper itself. Seems a poor design. Next problem is that following a good bleed, the fluid level is a bit low. Only I can't get the cap off as it seems to have been fitted by King Kong.

In BX news, the washer pump has arrived, but the engine mount has not, so I can't get a lot of progress er, progressed.

I hate it when people use copper / normal grease on caliper sliders.

Most run in rubber bushes and all have rubber boots. Normal grease makes these swell/ distort and the caliper sticks and boots dont fit properly.

Use silicone or red rubber grease.

Sorry if this is a granny/eggs interface.

Red rubber grease is now in situ, and the problem is solved. Went for a  test drive, including a brake-free stop from 60mph. Disc was stone cold. Sadly, the same could not be said for the caliper on the other side! Guess what I'll be doing after lunch...

I didnt know that about copper grease. Will get some red stuff when I sort out the XM's front brakes I think!

Fella who won the Senator has been in touch. Seems a decent enough chap, his daily is a Monza and he's already got a basket case Senator so he'll be looking to build one out of the two. Looks like he's coming on Sunday to collect. Fingers crossed!

Finally found a supplier for a 1.7 thermostat housing.  It's £40, which is more than I really want to spend at this moment in time and he would like to be paid by cheque and I don't possess a cheque book.  I'll figure this out, but at least it's a step in the right direction, I'm just worried that purchasing and fitting this is going to tip the Shite Balance out of my favour given how many other long standing issues I've resolved lately.

Postal order? I know that's only going to make it even more expensive.

New temp sender fitted to the Maestro now and it's running really well and the autochoke is working properly now, cutting in and out when it's supposed to. I have noticed one engine mounting is knackered, but fortunately managed to locate a genuine Rover replacement on Ebay. I have an ever-decreasing list of jobs to do/things to check for an MoT now, which is nice.

Waited for cartakeback to call to arrange collection of the Cougar. So far they've not called despite promising to call yesterday afternoon.

Sent them an email this morning asking them to get in touch and got an email back saying that someone would call this morning. They didn't. My phone has been at my side all day, in signal.

So. I've told them not to bother. I'll sell it elsewhere.

Looks like I'll have to brave the ebay mongs.

Vulg, if you want I can send a cheque and you can bung me the £ another way (eg cash by recorded delivery)?

Had a bit of a fight with one of the caliper sliders on the driver's side of the Sirion. I really did end up hammering a smaller socket over it, and still had to resort to the impact driver. I don't use it very often, but I'm very glad I own it when it is needed!

Of course, the fact that Daihatsu has departed our shores makes getting new slider pins a bit of a challenge. Local motor factors just laughed at me. I think I shall reassemble as best I can and the Sirion will have to be out of use for the time being. Oh well.

Cheque thing sorted, turns out Mum has a cheque book that she never uses, but thank you for the offer, M. Livered.

You know that feeling sometimes that a car is just fighting you?  I'm getting that today with the red Princess.  Nothing serious, just little things that are adding up to stretch my budget too far to fix quickly and it's pissing me off.  Full update shortly, I'm just having a post-shower chill for now because the red Princess decided to sprinkle me liberally with magical fairy dust**

I dropped it at the garage this morning, because one of the pipes leading to the radiator leaked.

They fixed it and wifey picked it up and drove it until it FTPed in a cloud of smoke due to having pissed the entire oil content of the gearbox onto the A6.

If that box survived, it's a wonder.

It's highly unlikely that the Sirion calipers were not shared with any other models... Check the pad cross-reference, it will hopefully tell you what cars you need to be looking for in the scrappy.

Productive couple of hours tidying the garage the Cortina is in today.

I haven't tidied it in almost 2 years, have regained a shit tonne of tools and particularly sockets.

Also much more comfortable to work on it, and much easier to get it out of the garage to do the bodywork, I was finding it very difficult to get the filler symmetrical on both sides of the headlamp areas due to the tight space and not being able to see both sides at the same time.

I hope to get it done very soon, but I need to change the wheel bearings on the 18 in preparation for the Oxfordshire Carlton shite collection.

Your lucky, I'm having major Cortina woes...

I spoke to the garage doing the work today, it seems the original wings are fucked, I'm not surprised as i knew they were bad, I had got a pair of replacements but it seems they are no better, one is a flop on panel which the garage won't fit as they said they were shit 30 years ago so they aren't pissing about with them now which is furry muff and a second hand one i bought that seems to be as rotten as my old wings now that they have shot blasted it.

The trouble is it's now holding the job up as it's almost ready for primer, Mk3 wings are the most expensive to buy and they are like rocking horse shit, there's a pair on ebay for nearly £900 at the moment! Sod that!.

What with this and the fuel pump for the Focus as well as car tax at the end of the month I think i'll be eating scraps for the next 6 months!

If all else fails, Smith & Deakin sells fibreglass wings for the Mk3 for £90 a side. I imagine that they would be a real pain to fit and paint, though.

Damn that's crap.

Fibreglass wings are an option as above though. On a mk1 they ruin the structural strength of the suspension but as the mk3's are bolt on I don't think that'll be such an issue.

Are mk3 wings really more expensive than mk1 wings? NOS mk1 wings are £1500 a pair.

Is it not viable to have your current ones repaired? The ones on my mk1 were a complete state but I repaired them in several places and they're reasonable now.

They reckon the rear edge at the top has gone and where it goes inside the wing under the bonnet is now non-existence and the double skinned lip along the back edge has swollen and is fucked, they were so full of filler it was hard to tell how bad they were.

Fibreglass is a thought but I can't imagine them being any better than the flop-on panel fitment wise.

Posted

tell the garage to fit the panel they won't fit!

FFS it isn't their car to make the choice - you're paying the bills, not them!

Posted

I suppose it's a case of grinding all the filler out and seeing what it looks like then? It was the same with my Minx (see pics in the Little Minx thread) but new wings weren't an option because I couldn't find any.

Posted

I understand why they won't fit the flop on panel, they don't want to spend a day trying to get it to line up, which it never will.

The garage next door has shot blasted both wings and there's no back edge left to weld too apparently, The drivers side is the worse one, the bottom of the wing is complete gone as well so it will need a lot of work and labour trying to weld it all up and they are concerned that it will rust up again within 6 months and i would have wasted my money.

They might be able to salvage my passenger wing as yet but I'll find out tomorrow properly.

Posted

At least the garage sound okay. Don't think you would get many refusing to put a wing on to save you hassle in the future.
