Finally, after wating nearly two months I have a shiny new welder. Weldequip certainly took their time about supplying it but hooked it all up today and can confirm it was worth the wait. It welds beautifully even on the lowest settings (15amp!). Can't wait to get cracking with it now.

That welder could literally impregnate me with flames any day. Phwoar.

My Corsair was badly rotten even though it looked OK (ish) on the outside.  When the previous owner pulled up the carpets, half the passenger side floorpan and most of an outrigger came away with the carpet.  It's had lots of shiny new metal welded in now though, and it's nearly ready to go back on the road.  Fortunately most of the outer panels were OK, apart from the bonnet which is a bit shit - I might end up going the OMGRATLUK way and spraying it satin black.

I got the Beluga running today, after having stripped the carb again and left everything soaking in carb cleaner for a couple of days.  It sounds healthy enough, although it needs tweaking and the exhaust is blowing a bit.  Unfortunately there seems to be a problem with the fuel supply - it runs fine from a can, but seems to struggle to run from the fuel in the tank, even now I've drained it and filled it with nice fresh pez.  I'll investigate further tomorrow - it was too fugging windy today, the fuel can got blown off the bike twice.  Worst comes to the worst, I'll do what I did with the Spacy when that was giving problems with the fuel tank, and bungee a jerrycan onto the luggage rack, with a pipe running direct to the carb.

I also pulled the Stanza onto the driveway and stripped the front end down - the bumper was a bit of a bastard to get off but the rest all came off fairly easily.  It's about how I expected it to be with the exception that both bumper mounts are bent to feck.  I've straightened them as best I can using a big fuck-off pair of adjustable pliers, but the offside one is suffering quite badly from metal fatigue, so I don't want to bugger about with it too much or it'll simply snap off.  Again, I'll have another bash tomorrow - if the car's still there.  I had some Irish gentlemen stop by while I was working on the Stanza and offer to pave my driveway - I politely declined, but I'm half expecting to be awoken by the sound of a HIAB one night soon...

I didn't know you have a Corsair, have you any photos?, I've gathering that these like to rust a lot, then again find me a old Ford (or any old car for that matter) that didn't. It's still definitely worth a look though, my Civic was stored in a garage for many years and that's mint and the early models like mine were so bad for rust that they even had a recall notice.

Well, my mk1 cortina was in a garage from 1981 to 2010.

It had a fair bit of rot, but I have a feeling that's why it was put into the garage.

I can't really help with outer body panels but check the rear wheel tubs, mine had big holes that weren't really visible until I started poking around, the front chassis where the bumper bolts on, the strut tops, and the sills. Mine was bad in all these places (and much more but thats specific to cortina body panels).

Thanks, I have a list of areas now where to look and what to check for, and to make sure it's a genuine GT. I just hope the cars not a shitbox!

The Fabia collection went very swiftly. I think it was a bargain, it looks almost like new.

Make a nice car when restored though.

Would you be going for a mint restoration or a use as is once mechanicals are fixed?

Wuv, doed it have a vaccum petrol tap? Lots of 80's scoots had these, and they will only run from the tank if the engine runs and the vaccum pipe is connected from the manifold to the tap.Easy to fit the pipes on the wrong way about too- they have caused me a bit of head scratching in the past...

The Fabia is surprisingly acceptable, it's quite nippy in its narrow torque band - it has that old school big N/A diesel in a small car feel like an old 205 or Clio diesel. It handles and rides well, but the steering's a bit artificial. Is it electronic PAS?

53MPG* average on the fuel computer on the way home, I wasn't hanging about either.

Richard, the best thing in that last photo is the abandoned shopping trolley.

I thought that about the trolley too, if I'd realised it was there I'd have added it to the line up.

The Fabia is an SDI (Shite Diesel Inert?), picking it up today with Richard's help. It should be veg friendly.
Not sure if £450 for a modern cheap to tax small car with short T&T is a good deal or not but I'm desperate.
Assuming it's sound, it might turn a bit of a profit with a fresh ticket - it'll do while I sort my shite agenda out.
I think it'll drive a bit like a Golf 1.9D.

I'd double check that, LP. I've no doubt your veg/diesel knowledge is much better than mine but I'm pretty sure the SDi ones won't have it.

Bought some new shit[e] for some reason.

Won't have what, Cav? Just discovered it has a chilled glovebox. I think that's a sign of running out of worthwhile things to add to cars - 90s was the peak obv.

The air con/chilled glovebox is a nice touch on these. Hydraulic PAS I think, the reservoir is in a poor position (right at the bottom of the n/s inner wing) and is prone to damage. Clutches on these are super light as well.

No idea, I don't want to jump the gun just yet!, I like the idea of a tatty but usable daily driver but who knows?.

I think what Billy's getting at is the SDI engine is a n/a PD engine and thus won't drink the veg.  They're not a bad wee car, though.

From wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Volkswagen_Group_diesel_engines#1.9SDI)

I had/still have (ex wifes) a Skoda Fabia sdi. Its definitely an electronic controlled engine not old school. But when it averages 45mpg round town and will do 65mpg at 70mph on a run I wouldn't bother myself with it on veg. Watch out for faults from the electric power steering, the are very voltage sensitive. If you have any doubts about the battery replace it and most steering faults go away. They leak water into the rear footwells due to doorseals and dodgy membranes on the doors. Hers is up to 90k now and no issues at it at all other than a leaky rear wheel cylinder(drum brakes on rear) and the boot catch handle packed up. Won't win any speed records but who cares when its so damn economical.

Posted

No probs - I'd just assumed it would be too modern for veg.

My missus yaris passed mot yesterday after doing 20k in a year! I would not be happy doing 20k in a 1.0 yaris, but my missus is happy and it costs sod all so I am happy.

The little thing is rough up close but this picture makes in look ready for the 2014 yaris nob jockeys polishing wax off.

worked on the mrs rs turbo today, making up and replacing brake lines and fitted her new koni adjustable shockers, im a bit disappointed because i ordered some new springs 2 weeks ago from a local shop but they have had to come from germany as no one has stock of them and they still haven't come.

Had a good time today at the Brooklands Austin-Morris day. Saw shiter RobT and his lovely Metro, also saw Alexg's Allegro estate and Sinclair C5 but missed the man himself. Lovely weather, and I managed to power the Somerset up the Test hill which was good fun!

Also, all the work myself and dad did last week on the Maestro's engine has paid off as he's just phoned and it's now running well. The autochoke is working, but sticking on, also there's a slight exhaust blow somewhere under the car but it starts first turn of the key now. Should be able to aim for an MoT soon!

Got up early yesterday, drove to the arse end of Cheshire and picked up a new (to us) caravan...

Hitched it onto the C8 and Headed North sticking to 60* MPH.

Pulled the old van off the pitch and lobbed it on an empty one, the missus put the new van onto our pitch ( I may have mentioned she has no difficulty driving and reversing tractors/trailers)

Spent the day shifting crap from the old van to th new one, then testing bits of the new van, then cleaning the old van.

The dragged the old van home today.

C8 did rather well in towing, bit not as stable as my old Xantia past 60. Total outfit length 40 feet Going, 37 feet coming back.

Had a punter i my Fiesta today.......not bad considering not advertised since last year, He is 'going to think about' it. I'm not too upset as I would quite like to keep it!

Did the sump gasket on Miss Alf's Corsa B yesterday to cure a slight oil leak......this has turned a little leak into a big one! There is a rust hole (pinhole really) but bashing it to get in it off didn't do it any favours. All vauxhalls r shit etc and bloody moderns.....

wouldn't happen to a ford.

Plan to drop a weld on it next weekend in situ.
