Well I got the Doom Box fitted to the Rover 75.  It wasn't too bad of a job really - easier than the online guide led me to believe it'd be.  I need to have a fiddle with it to try and find the optimum settings, but the car definitely feels a lot more responsive (it wheelspins on the throttle in the dry now when pulling away) and overtaking is a lot less painful than it was before, so that's good.  I still can't get the locking wheel bolts off though - I found my reverse-thread windy sockets, but the smallest one of the two is still slightly too big to get a grip of the bolts.  I've ordered a set of larger bitey-type sockets, which will hopefully do the job - otherwise I'm going to have to fork out for a proper set of keys (or find a tyre place which will get them off for me - my local place won't, they have a bloke who does it for them but he has a £60 call out charge, fuck that for a game of soldiers).

It's going to need a front drop link too I reckon as it's started knocking over bumps, and it'll probably need pads and a bush or two before its next MOT, but I can't do any of that until I can get the sodding wheels off.  Other than that it continues to give sterling service, and is still a wonderfully relaxing thing to waft around in.  It'll get to stretch its legs next weekend when I drive down to my parents' for Christmas.

I've "fixed" the clutch on the LDV.  The problem was a little plastic clip which holds the clutch pedal arm onto the master cylinder pushrod - it's a bit broken.  I've managed to wangle it back together and it seems to be holding for now, but ideally it needs a new clip - they don't appear to be available separately though, only as part of a new master cylinder, so if it lets go again I might have to just break out the superglue.

I've run into a bit of an issue with the carb on the Raleigh.

I've stripped it and cleaned everything out and reassembled with a new float bowl gasket, but there appears to be a significant gap between the float bowl and its cover - I realise that the retaining bolt is well off to the side, but still, it shouldn't look like that - it's definitely not air- or pez-tight like it is.  I'm assuming something must have got warped at some point.  I'm going to try bodging it up with Hylomar, at least for now - the alternative is to purchase a replacement carb, and given that I'm trying to get the bike sorted on a fairly restricted budget I'd rather avoid that if at all possible.

I have however found 6v bulbs which will fit the headlight - they are 5/21W rather than 15/15, but that just means I'll have side and headlight rather than dipped and main beam - I can't see myself riding it much at night anyway so that's not an issue.  The rear bulb appears to be of the same screw-in type used in pushbike dynamo lights, so I'm pretty sure I've got a few of those lying around.

Just dropped the duster off at the garage for its first service in my care. 12000 miles in 10 months and the only thing it's cost me for is 2 rear tyres.

(Waits for phonecall telling me it's fucked now...)

Boring modern, I know, but after the farce that was the inshitnia, it's what I've needed!

That would make me happy even with the risk of extra hassle.

Is it 4WD??

Would expect it to wear the fronts first regardless no?

No, it's a 2wd diesel. The 4wd I went to look at was an utter dog- there wasn't a straight panel on it!

Its got a set of decent winter tyres all round on it, so it should be ample if we do get anything other than rain this winter. The first owner had changed the fronts, then part exed it against a brand new one 6 months later... The rears were the original factory ones at 5 years old and 43000 miles.

Gave the Frontera a bit of clean in the weekend:

Had to use whatever I could get my hands on. However, today at work I received a small Secret Santa gift of car shampoo, wash mitt and glass/mirror cleaner! So I'll give the Frontera a bit more tlc if I still have it by the weekend.

 i cannot deal with the brush photo. As a two bucket wrong un i feel violated

There were actually 2 buckets involved. The other one is hiding around the corner. Usually I use a hose to water down the car but it was out of action.

Nope? Not mine, it's Sam's (Red5). Sam would kill me.

Hillman Stinx from the baffling period when Rootes introduced a new mark or phase every 5 minutes, presumably for marketing reasons; these changes mean spares availability especially trim is even more nonexistent than with other contemporaries.

You could've knocked me over with a feather earlier when I put the belt on and ran it up to temperature, there was no signs of hgf, I've told her keep an eye out for warning lights but it appears she has had a lucky escape

Amazing. Best tell her to buy a lottery ticket!

Killing an hour at Birmingham New Street since I’m returning carless from chod delivery.

Should probably do some work while waiting for the train to Leeds.

Safe to say she was over the moon, I did tell her she has used up next year's luck on this one

To celebrate the birth of each of his children, my Motor trade dad made up a number plate for each of us. Given I'm old*, mine is proper raised digits :-). By the time my sister was born, she got a standard reflective effort...

Discovery scores 4 new tyres! This now provides me with 3 good spares. I wait in anticipation to see what major mechanical catastrophe will occur with it in the next few days to equal the universe out...

POS Rover 75......

in recent months its had a clutch, DMF, and new brake pads and discs, so today its thrown up a ABS fault and no speedo.

thank you you fuckin' turd.

given its done 168000 miles, and kerry has managed to turn it into a horrid filthy skip inside, i'm ready to run it straight up to the scrap yard and just have done.

Rover 75 forum suggests* that the fault will be in the o/s/f hub sensor cos that is the one which works the speedo, and that pone is the one we had to change the hub on cos the old one wasn't holding the bottom ball joint, cos it was fucked. and been a second hand one which has a siezed sensor stuck in it, so we had to join the existing wiring to the second hand hub.

so kerry has bought a new ABS sensor, in the hope that it will cure the speedo/ABS warning light. if of course we can fit it.

we wont, and the new bit won't either.

fuckin' thing, anyone want a shitty old diesel etate?

no, no i didn't think so,,,,,,,,,,

If thats the same as the similar carbs i have come across before, then one of the jets sits proud, it needs to locate into the recess in the other half for the joint to close up. While this sounds obvious and simple its neither and usually requires twisting and faffing with the body halves before tightening screws up, could also be a miss shaped gasket?

Soooooo

Roomster no.1 passed MOT last week.

This week, it's rewarded us by flashing a low oil pressure light and promptly seizing. Bumhats.

As the Mrs does big miles, we've decided the policy of many disposable cars isn't working, so we went all out and bought a nearly new Hyundai i30 with barely 25k on the clock and a couple of years warranty left on it.

Hopefully she can now enjoy a few years of hassle free motoring. She deserves it, it's the nicest car she's had after me foisting various heaps on her over the years.

So that now leaves me with a working Roomster with many niggles, a borked Roomster and a borked W203.

After Christmas I'd sorely love to consolidate them all into something more interesting.......

Indeed.

It's worked out for the best, and for an appliance the Hyundai is actually quite nice. It drives really well and because it's so kind to kittens it costs zero money to tax.

I'm curious to see how long we can make a car last in our care owned from nearly new. We tend to look after things. Official service interval is a frightening 20k but I intend to at least do the oil every 5k. It's a modern diesel.

I'm actually a bit scared now. We've dumped many thousands on something that has much complication.........

I think doing the oil super regularly (at least twice as often as specified) is one of the best bits of preventative maintenance you can do with a modern diesel!
