In touch straight after end of auction Billy - said he'll send a wagon.

Today has mostly been spent trying to entice an enthusiastically overheating 23 year-old Vauxhall Frontera Diesel not to boil over for the 150-ish miles I drove it. I am now very tired and want to sleep.

Yesterday the van decided it didn't want to go out.  I suspect a voltage drain from the slightly broken loadbay light, which is going anyway in favour of LEDs.

I probably need to wash the Octavia, too.

Was helping my dad yesterday.

We were having a prod around his generator at the back of the farm shed. It's not cranking quick enough to start. We didn't manage to fix it but I took some photos of it anyway. It's a weird starting system, where the generator/alternator part of it works as a starter then switches over once the engine is running. It can even be set to auto, he says that when it's working properly and it detects more than 40W being drawn from the battery, it fires up the engine.

Amongst my presents today, I got a decent-looking set of 1/2" drive sockets, all metric (I've never owned a car that uses imperial... yet). They came with a T-bar, a ratchet, a long wheel-brace type handle, two extension bars, and one of those bendy joins too.

Upon emerging, found the rear lights aren't working - bah!

Instrument and front sidelights out, too?

If yes, the culprit could likely be the multi plug on the underside of the steering column.

Does it run on veg, mate? (Soz, couldn't resist). One of those everlasting old Listers, looks like an air-cooled one for extra noise.

This is the toolkit I got for Christmas from my 2 year old grand daughter. I've had worse quality.

Driving along today and couldn't shake the feeling I could smell burning plastic. Popped the bonnet to find I'd left the plastic funnel there after checking the levels, and it had melted on the manifold. oops.

Ha ha! I did that a couple of years back but it was the cover from over the headlight assy after I'd changed a bulb.

Cock up of today was mashing the Gooner's o/s mirror on a gatepost.

WTF is the Craphouse and why do we need it?

Had a sFTP yesterday in the P6B.

(Secure FTP = FTP in the safety of your own driveway.)

Drove home from church in near-100 degree heat, 1970s aircon yammering away doing it's job, temp gauge on the line between white and green.

Let passengers out, then restarted car 2 mins later to run the car up the drive into my rose-arbour carport.

Got out of car, ready to lock the door when I heard a funny noise; steam came from all around the bonnet, and then a river of coolant under the car.

Too hot to even open the bl**dy bonnet, so left it for a few hours.

Later in the day, after an afternoon sleep, went out to check, filled the radiator, ran the engine up to temp and saw coolant squirting out near the water pump.  Oh great, says I.

But hang on, thinks I, a failed water pump in one of these means a hot engine and a cold radiator, but the top hose is really hot.  Don't think that could be it.

So, with the engine really cold this morning, stick my hand in to feel around, and bingo!

There's a short 4" piece of hose from the water pump to the pipe that goes under the inlet manifold, and that has a 2" long split along its underside.

Result!  Just got to go to the Australian equivalent of Halfords and find something that will fit.  Means Boxing Day sales mind you, but I can live with that.

And equivalent part found, bought, fitted, radiator refilled and tested; job's a good 'un.

So glad this didn't happen on the road, in the heat, on Christmas Day.

Well, another FTP this morning. (Mrs Beard meeting a friend to exchange presents 40 miles away.)

After having the starter motor replaced on the MG ZT on Wednesday, the Honda Accord failed to start at 8 am today. Battery flat. Honda had a new alternator earlier this year plus a recent new battery. Battery was supplied and fitted by RAC last year (after the old, original one died leaving us stranded due to the car being an automatic)

An hour or so on a 4 amp charger was enough to fire the car up. Multimeter showed 14.4 Volts with the engine running, but only 12.3 with the engine off. Battery is toast then methinks. Under warranty but no longer with the RAC and can't find receipt, so not much chance of warranty being honoured then!

Mrs Beard took the MG ZT instead....

She hasn't driven it before now.

She hasn't driven a car with a manual gearbox for a while*.....

If you paid for it using a card, then the statement will suffice.

I'm sure they will have it on record as well. Call them up and quote the vehicle registration number.

Thanks Mr Junk, will take a look at this - you have described the mode of failure perfectly.  I was suspecting the light switch - but we'll see.  I know (I think) it's not the fuse(s) as the front and rear are on different fuses.

I like that !  (not the fact it happened but the definition with reference to Unix/Linux commands).

That's a Lister "Start-o-matic" genset. engines that look visually similar to that one were made from the late 50's onward,  The last versions made in 1985.

They will run on veg (if it's warm enough), but the power output will be lower, which could be quite important with a genny.
