I took the Dolly out for a good run today to test the brakes and even took my 8 week old daughter out to a pub in Felixstowe in it and to meet a mate down there for a coffee (he's the one with the Tesco Value wedding Allegro), other than a grumbling rear wheel bearing it's running great now the brakes have been fixed.

As you all know, money has been raised to help the luckiest members of the forum, Bub2006 and Chompy_Snake, after they cheated death in a 2001 Ford Escort van.  Now that the Raffle is ended I think it's time to release one very important figure.  The figure is the amount raised by the Autoshite community to help get both of them back on their wheels and moving while they try and get back to some semblance of normality.  It has helped purchase a car for Bub2006, fund the MoT (and hopefully any costs that might be incurred) and helped Chompy get the car collected that he and Bub were off to collect on that fateful day.  It's also helped cover the extra expense of hospital trips and all the other chaos that seems to eat up money for no reason.  That amount is... *drum roll*

£624.36

There are still some donations coming in.  There are not enough words to express the gratitude I have, let alone what Bub and Chompy have, for this amount.  You've all made their recovery easier to manage and removed some of the stress of bills that might have had to go unpaid.  As lovely as it was for some of you to say I deserved a cut for my hard work, not a bit of it!  I won't accept anything for helping them out, I couldn't afford to put anything into the pot so my time and effort was what I gave instead just how some of us couldn't offer financial support but were able to offer words of support.  It all helps.

Autoshite, you are amazing.

Lancia Beta Spyder came out of hibernation this week, I might get it on the road this year. It had a year off last year due to me working away, but fingers crossed it shouldn't need too much as it was legal before it was put into dry (slightly mouse infested) storage. I'm still toying with fitting the twin 40's I've got stashed away. It also needs the roof donated by Mr_BV attaching that has been in the boot since I collected it from Beko at SF last year, thx again chaps.

Thinking about it I think I will go for twin carbs and try to get back on the road as it is a nice car to drive.

Scottish is Volvo buying shocker ... Anyway, that looks a bit newer than your usual fodder FOAD.

They paid me to take it away! With transport costs back from Glasgow it now owes me £20. I'm probably going to get it going and try swapping it for something a bit more my style but you never know I might end up liking it...

Make sure that all of the expenses this has helped to pay for have been receipted. Once the insurance company pays up for them. Take the cash then you, bub and chompy go and have a good night in the razz.

Oh, receipts are being kept for everything, right down to the mileage for trips to and from the hospital and doctors.  That's the first we really realised just how much more expensive things have been this past week.

Shiney black cars give me a stiffy

I took a good look at the saphs front bumper with the scope to make it look a bit better, to my surprise what appeared to be gouging was actually plastic transfer from the wagon r's mudflap, 10 minutes with the G3 and a good polish and it was shining like nothing had happened, that was lucky

Got the ST drivers seat back from the re-trimmers today. The frame just above the bit where it hinges has snapped

So it had to be welded. The side trim hasn't gone on exactly right but at least it works now and is a lot better than its temporary replacement

The bolster is getting a bit worn

So put some boot polish on it, not great but better than nothing

Just need to figure out how to work it now. It came with instructions, thankfully.

Apparently step one is to dress like Mr Chumley Warner.

Whilst I am happy with it, I am generally a little peeved as the place I bought it from was an old-skool garage, owned by an old-skool mechanic, who fixed old-skool cars using old but quality tools. He croaked last year and his daughter is selling everything off really cheaply but someone got there a couple of days before me and bought up pretty much everything, and they are coming back to collect this week. 4-post ramp....400euros. Massive pillar drill...100euros. Huge box of drill bits from 1mm up to 40mm....50 euros. cases of spanners, sockets, taps and dies and all that sort of thing sold off for 50euros a box. Someone got a real bargain. Typically it wasnt me.

Further to my post on the last page about the Capri, I went down to see the guys at Classics about the Capri today on my way home from work.

They seemed keen and said since it's local and drivable could I get the car to them now! No waiting for a free slot in the diary or anything!

So I went home, jumped in the Capri and ran it round to them.

Basically, the agreed plan is to leave it with them and they will over the next few days get it up in the air and have a really good look over it. Ive said to concentrate mainly on the bodywork and chassis side of things but to note anything else they find anyway.

Once that's done we'll have a chat about how to tackle things, what to do what not to do etc.

That all went pretty fast tbh! I'm glad actually as I've been dithering and fannying around over what to do with this car for the last few years and never done anything. Now, however I've just gone for it and in a way made a start.

I just hope it turns out to be as good a car as I think it is!

I cannot reverse for shit!

Who (or what) did you run over?!

If it was in the Bentley you probably wouldn't have noticed anyway!

Posted

to prove it happened, few pics of the cheap shitter I picked up on Saturday, up in Westmeath - didn't bother with a collectionage thread as no pics due to me being hopelessly lost /stressed to the max/ very very late, getting to the sellers...

Has had a thump up the passenger side, which is why it was so cheap;.... ;laid up by the sellers mrs after the "an auld wan drove into 'side of it with the chile in de back, dozey aul bitch" - she bought a 307 to replace it ......still its got 2 months test on it, newish tyres. handbrake was seized on, n battery caput, but the seller was a real gent who got the booster out to charge the battery, n large hammers out to unstick the rear handbrake - after 3 or 4 failed attempts to start it n the alarm goin apeshit, I was off following my brother back to Co.Tipp...

scary as fook to drive for 1st 10/15 miles, with lots of random creaking n noises, woefully unresponsive steering but it seemed to loosen up on the last half of the journey - even Padre Pio was happy to eventually get home at 10.30 ....

have some pics...

A friend (yes, I do have some!) has rung me to tell me he has a lead on an auto MX5! But, it's a mk2 in British racing green and I want a ml 1 in any colour other than green!

Also, even though he is a mate of long standing (30 years ) he WILL make sure there's a few bob in it for him. That bugs me slightly but he's always done it (secretly), but as I get older, I am less tolerant of people 'having me over'. If it was a business, then no problem, but just a mate who happens to hear of something...

I know if it's what I want and I'm happy with the price paid, then all is peachy. But, it hurts me that he would do this and it will annoy me every time I see it/him.

Am I wrong?

Posted

no

is he a real friend- if you said "can i borrow £100?! would he answer

  1. yes= true friend
  2. what for? =just someone you know

There's no right and wrong with that one, depends entirely on the nature of your friendship with him

If it's not the model and colour you want, then there's your get out clause........

Yes, he is a 'true' friend. Love the bloke dearly and even though we have had some huge disagreements over the years (usually cars or money... or both!) we have always stayed friends.

I know he does it, he always has. Normally, I can ignore it, but right now, I guess I'm just pissed off with people trying to 'have me over'. It happens a lot currently, but then, I guess if you are going to act flash (with a big green dollop) you deserve everything you get.

Oh well, if the car is any cop, I'll have it and let him have his 'shilling' and just ignore it as usual.

It's really funny (read: I'm a seriously odd and fucked up person) but I will actively pay over the odds to a business to help keep them going (shop round the corner is an example: I don't use them a lot any more but was actively going there for all sorts rather than a supermarket as he/they were struggling to begin with and I really liked him/them and the fact that there's a little corner shop for emergencies! I even lent him the money to help him get card payments sorted out as he was 'cash only' and I thought that was harming his chances of making it.) and never object to businesses making a quid or two, it's all very well buying everything from eBay/Amazon but small independents need our support. It's just friends taking the piss that I object to.

There, now I've proved what a 'lovely' chap I am..... :)

A couple of years ago , I'd got a job in the evening driving a long standing lady client to a reception at the Palace of Westminster. I drove her there in her Arnage Red Label, waited patiently by College Green for her return at about 11, she comes out with a Lady ( actual title) of a certain age and statuesque proportions ,dressed in elegant evening attire ,complete with ( undoubtedly real) fur. Apparently we were giving her a lift.

On the journey out of town it transpired this Lady lived between my client's house and mine, so it was decided I'd drop her off on my way home......

It wasn't until the Arnage's headlamps swept across the drive and picked out the rusty mk1MX5 that I remembered I'd driven there in my daughter's car and not my CLS.

Great hilarity was had squeezing Her Ladyship in, she removed the fur and asked me to put it in the boot- it only just went in. Im 6'3" and the wrong side of 20 stone,so for the 15 minute journey I was closer to her than I think any commoner had been before.when getting her out I was pleased to note the Aristocracy favour stockings over tights.

Half the fun is getting in, getting out is easy, just roll onto the floor, I always did with my old MX5!
