Done quite a lot of work on Cortina, hoping to mot and paint it next weekend, hugely excited as it's been 4 years in the making.

Also bought a pair of rear arch repair panels for my 18, thought I would have to make them but I was directed to a very moderately priced (36 euros each) french auto body website.

What happened to the 504 brookjm?

Sadly Needed more complicated welding than I was capable of, sold it to a local chap who already owns a pickup!

I had a Bakers cyst on my knee burst, possibly the most pain I've ever been in, including my now fucked back.

The keyhole cartridge op I had was a peice of piss though, so much quicker to heal and a lot less painful than the one I had in the early 90s, 2 weeks after the op and your knee will feel like new.

I'm going to have to acept that I like the Kia enough to spend money on it which is totaly not what I intended. The thing has no rust worthy of the name and apart from a crap change into 2nd gear drives very sweetly. I have even had it upto 88 on sat nav speed with power in reseserve.

It currently has 5 brands of tyre (hankook, roadstone, rayal, kumho and firestone) on the wheels and though they all have useful tread the sidewalls on a couple are rather dodgy so I'm going to bite the bullet and get fresh boots.

A call to Selly Oak Tyres beckons.

What?  Nooo!  Sad news.  Sounds like it's in good hands though.

When you watch the likes of b0ll0x or tonybmw doing it they make boshing up panels and welding them in from a sheet of old road sign  look easy. The truth is it's really hard and takes ages.

I've got a fair bit of experience with welding but so far it's taken me 7 hours to cut out, clean up then make up and weld in some new panels on the floor of my cortina.

If you've got donor panels it's much easier.

Fleet news- GT6 can haz MOT. It was last taxed in 1980(!)  and missed the historic vehicle tax shenannegins in the 90s whilst it was slumbering in a central london lockup, so the next task is to get the DVLA to change it from PLG to historic....

A guy over the road asked me what the eml light on his 2004 golf tsi something was, perfect excuse to grab my obd dongle! P2096 which apparently is something to do with an o2 sensor, apparently there's a few, wtf? Anyone have any idea? I'll pop round and let him know if so.

He got fleeced £70 to get it plugged in and a sentence of doctors writing on a bit of paper, fiver well spent I think!

Not fleeced, stung. Suppose the car blokes got to make a crust I suppose

It does, and this is so that it doesnt fire off 240v into a grid which some poor bugger may be working on

If the poor bugger in question is working the other side of the local transformer he might end up with an unwelcome 11000 volts.

Fortunately there are several safeguards against this happening.

My Mazda 121 (basically exactly the same thing, but with a carb and no rev limiter) would hold a genuine ton on the flat.  Didn't have much left in reserve though to be fair.

I still haz no car, 2 months now looking for a road worthy SD1, possibly even a dolomite 1850 but does anything within a 500 mile radius ever come up for sale when you wanna buy?......

No of course not, this stuff only comes up for sale when you don't have the money!! FACT!!

Have you been looking on the sd1 forum?

Yes mate, just one on there that I viewed at the end of May (2600 VDP), silly old sod mis-described it and said he had full service history...did he f*ck. He had the log book and current MOT cert then asked me what use are old receipts and MOTs?!!! Also said it had a recent Cambelt.......................

in 2006!

I left promptly before being rude.

Some of then over value the cars but there is also some genuinely good ones on there. They all rot like bastards so finding a good one is hard. I'm selling mine but it's probably not your thing.

Im not much of a forum user, most of them on there believe all SD1's should be worth £5k when it aint gonna happen! Bless em..

Yes mate seen it on C&C, looks cool but not for me plus im about 250,000 miles away!

The £500 106 gti finally got picked up from the seller by the MOT garage, apparently it would "sometimes not start" according to them. I went down after work and it had only failed the test on a wiper blade, but they couldn't get the fucker to start again for a retest so I popped home and got a few tools and fucked both the OE immobiliser and the aftermarket crock of shit off in the carpark outside. Anyway the seller is being a bit cagey, I hope it's just due to him not mentioning the immobiliser fault because if that's all that's really wrong then I'm gonna be superchuffed, I couldn't really give a shit about an hour pulling black wires out of the loom and twisting the coloured ends together so they match.

Paint is a bit flat in places, it needs tyres IMO (cracked) and the backbox has fell to pieces inside but ten years ago I would have given both of my bollocks and all three of yours for one of these.

I think that's very likely the reason he's being cagey. he probably doesn't know you've got electric wizardry powereds so will be sitting waiting for the 'ermine, did this car ever not start with you ' phone call.

Posted

If that's all that's wrong with it and it sailed through the MOT that easily then you've got yourself a little bargain there.  Lovely colour too, I really like the way these look when they're left stock.  In fact, it looks so good in that photo it even makes up for the numberplate on the BMW convertible.

Posted

It could just be a sheer coincidence it has started to play up an hour after collecting the car, no legal proof the owner knows anything about this non starting issue etc etc...

Couldn't agree more, how often do you see one of these left stock? Like never.

Anyway the seller is being a bit cagey

in what way?

Peugeot got the styling bang on with the sporting models

Posted

Not that cagey, just a bit too quiet really

when I buy a car I never hear from the sellers either I thought that was the norm :-D

Today I was parked at a petrol station in the 18, and a guy shouts "Love the auld motors man".

He thought the 18 was a 16 and was further confused with the badge on the back that says "Renault 12L".

Anyway, his wife/girlfriend or whatever came over, we were talking for a bit more about old cars and then his wife/girlfriend asked my mate if he was interested in a threesome. - I almost got a photo, which would have helped explain the awfulness of this offer.

Proof that an 18 does pull all the birds.

Have some holiday snaps-

The 200k+ audi shite, bought last year for less than the cost of an annual service on a modern, has not only taken La Famille to deepest France but this week dragged them and the caravan five hours north to the back end of beyond.

Not bought from here brookjm, but a local purchase last year. Bought with 196k and no service history so I had the timing built changed and it needed a new thermostat. Had about 8000 trouble free miles since.
