I have owned my 51 plate 325ci for exactly 3 years and today I decided to work out how much this marvellous piece of German engineering has cost.

Price of car. £2000

Parts. /mot £3436

Tax/fuel/ins. £3250

Thats a grand total of £8686 for 22,250 miles and if I have done the maths right it's 39p/mile.

So much for a cheap car lol and I have done all the repairs myself excluding tyres.

Bloody ell! What has it needed doing to rack up those parts costs?

Everything.  Because E46

39p per mile does not seem bad for a large engined car and a lot cheaper that a new one.

Add from What Car VW Golf 1.5 TSi, 3 years 30k £16455 = 55p per mile

I have had mine two years and all it’s needed is valve on the front of the engine that recirculates exhaust gases when cold, the hedgehog resistor for the heater and a passenger door stay. Total cost less than £100, It’s a 4 cylinder touring but the same generation. I know of two others at work, both touring and 6 cylinders and both have had very few if any problems in the same time.

You can instantly improve your cost per mile by subtracting the current asset value of the car! Say it's worth 850, that's 10% off your costs without even getting up off the sofa

Well here goes,

Front wheel bearings, brake discs and pads all round, thermostat and expansion tank, drive belts and a tensioner, both rear axle drive shafts, power steering pump and high pressure hose ( that was £233 on its own ) a set of s/h alloy wheels to replace buckled ones ,vanos seals, valve cover gasket , both front brake calipers, water pump, hand brake repair kit and back plates, front control arms, rear suspension bushes and shock absorbers, rear exhaust mounts, crank case valve and pipe work , tyres, service items and other bits.

I have had a real purple one for E46s since my pal had a 323ci (he did say it was a 330) with full factory M-sport kit way back in 2001.

Fuck getting one of those now.

Looks like you need a bit of luck in the used BMW Coupe game (touches wood).

No such thing as a cheap car nowadays.

A quick tally suggests the Honda is coming in at 35p per mile all-in. I'll take that.

Including the cost of purchase and all the work that Ive had done to the Megane since purchasing it in August 2016, it works out so far at 19p a mile. That includes servicing and MOTs. Adding insurance and all the petrol ive ever bought in the 16 months Ive owned it that works out at a grand total of 45p a mile.

I could add the cost of the car shampoo I use to wash it, divided by 4 among the cars but that would just be silly...

So yeah, about not buying an E46, oerhaps its not so bad!

The newer ones aren’t any better, my e92 cost about 38p per mile due to the frequent maintenance required and that was ‘only’ 8 years old

As a comparison my leased Octavia vRS will cost 35p per mile, less if I change my contract mileage midway rather than paying excess at the end.

Your maths are RONG.

You didn't factor in the depreciation.

Let's say it's worth 1,200 now, then your ppm is 43.

There;s one sitting down at my lockup that's had probably £3500 spent on it in the last 2 years and likely done less than 10 miles in that time.

New clutch and flywheel.

new injectors

Engine fubared because of dropped swirl flaps.

Full engine rebuild including new pistons and rods

2 front wings

Now the oil pump is borked.

he's been trying to sell it to me for much less than this but I'm like

My 1997 318i E36 Wagon:

Car was £400 in August 2014 with 151'000, now on 180'000. Apart from tax, MOT's and fuel:

Water pump £24

Four new Goodyears £220

Thermostat £28

Secondhand (but nearly new) exhaust from a £100 parts car

£8 LUK clutch kit from Ebay, old one was really heavy but bit low.

Four oil and filter changes at @ £30 a pop (Halfords oil, BMW filter) £120

Front discs and pads at 168'000 £56 at ECP

Grey leather interior to replace the grubby piss stained map of Africa cloth nonsense* £150

Around a grand for 3 and a bit years and 30'000 miles. That'll do me. It's still worth the 400 sheets I paid for it.

*It was mint when I got it. But I'm an animal with daily cars.

£1200 , that's optimistic it needs 2 front wings , rust is showing on the sills , rear subframe and the panel below the boot .

So I will probably drive it into the scrapyard when I've finished with it.

Mine has been 24p a mile for three years, including fuel, tax and insurance.

Am I the only one thinking, 'I could've bought several more cars for that money'?

I always buy the wrong car , the last one ( a Mondeo) the engine went bang on the A19 and the cops just phoned a breakdown truck and I sold it for scrap the same day .I'd just had enough problem after problem that car.

I'll better that. Nov last year £400 on Mondeo Diesel estate, £17 on a cam sensor, £15 set of rear pads, so that's £432. Sold in May when it started sending smoke signals to some bums for £450. I make that £18 profit. Almost like working.

Threw £350 into a Mk2 Mondeo, £45 on rear brake rebuild, £8 spent chucking a new CV boot on it and £15 on a new thermostat housing then £40 on an MOT. Went a bit mad there I guess. Then this evening as its behaved itself blew a massive £20 on a replacement bumper.

I don't want to talk about the welding bill on the Focus. £120 but it was a big patch and it'll see the car out. Other than that 'out of pocket costs' have been £17 on a clutch master cylinder and a £19 engine mount.

Remember fuel, tax, insurance all of that.

I dont even know why I posted all my calculations (that I had just worked out whilst on a break from wrapping Chrimbo pressies) on here because I just drive the fuckers and dont really give a monkey's about 'cost effectiveness' and all that fluff. If you're into cars youre invariably gonna be barassic 95% of the time unless you are rich or a real skinflint.

If one of my motors ever goes on the piss big time I suppose I'll just take stock of things at the time such as attachment to the car versus cost of the repair and take it from there!

Posted

Can't think what ive spent in that respect as my work requires me to travel into the city so driving isn't an option so maybe 6000 miles a year at 47 mpg in the diesel and similar in the petrol doing 35mpg.
