£5k car buying challenge.

Combining MattLikesCars' theme and the sell a convertible in the summer theory

Buy this, flog the truck cab to an OLLI type, get a canvas , maybe a trendy bikini thing, then general tarting up to appeal to London Hipsters- kerching!

These things are increasing in value by £500 every 6 months anyway , so you cant* lose.

I've not read the whole thread but LS400s appear to be on a near vertical incline thanks to some successful white room style sales.

You can still get a good one for 2k or so now but if you want to make profit I'd say they're a goer.

Volvo 480s are also getting there.

Only a fool would buy anything modern* and French (except perhaps an AX GT, 205 GTi or exotica like Alpines or Venturis) in the hope of making a worthwhile profit. PHACT.

This is brilliant. At the end can you video it and write the prices on the cars screen in some white pen thing like the big lad on used car roadshow?

Retro wedge with pop-up lights, Sir? Lotus Excel.

E30 and 205 are both good bets, but a bit obvious, something Lotus will be fun and should sell in summer if the bastard thing doesn't fall apart during the winter

Film it, let us laugh at this nonsense.

The 16v ZX might be a good bet to be fair, or a 306 GTI6 or some other performance model, prices are beginning to rise.

I've also noticed old Corollas are starting to go oddly mental pricing wise, although that's a touch dull right?

Buy, wisely spend 2k on getting it sorted, then easily win the challenge by doubling your money after Easter.

And it's completely risk free.

+1 on this, Do you have a workshop at all that can work on cars during slack times? although if your boss is chucking 20k at this (okay he may not lose 20k but the outlay is there) I assume you're busy!

Thing is, once you bought the MGB, your colleagues will live for a full six months with the knowledge that they lost the challenge.

I couldn't resist it just for that.

How about playing the system?

What happens if you can't sell what you bought?

Could you buy something that no one (else) in their right mind would give 5k for and end up keeping it?

If not, 205Gti or Alfa Gtv/spyder as previously suggested.

Why not just take a gamble on an old Rolls or Bentley. The prices keep on rising on the buggers, the nice Shadow I sold just over a year ago for 4k has now been valued at 10. You have to be careful though as 5k is a risky budget for one. Just avoid white and try not to use it as that could get expensive when it shits itself

Does it have to sell in Britain? I recon a nice Jag could get a good price in Germany. A mate of mine used to keep buying them and making good money.

As a serial Three Pointed Star Fan Boy.....My Suggestion is this...Or one of these beauties. The R129 Mercedes SL.

Only ever going to go one way in value & that is up,

& then, come the summer.....Kerrrrching!...Laugh all the way to the bank

Early ones of these are becoming quite sought after now, Orange indicators & the 3,0, 24v Straight 6 engine..Perfect cruiser....   they are also lovely looking cars in my Opinion

Buy now, reap the rewards in the summer.

That is all.

The MGB is almost as good as money in the bank. However if you don't fancy loads of resto work, this is the sort of thing that will retail easily in June....£4200 as it stands, i dare say the seller might fancy some folding just before Christmas so I would expect a discount for cash

Looks nice!

Does it have to be one car?

Could be a great opportunity to buy everything for sale on Autoshite!

Ten Rover 75's?

Future classics to be sure*, but you need to have patience and storage facility....

Hmm. Rolling 25 year rule for imports in America so 1993 cars will be legal in the new year. What 1993 cars would outstrip demand over there but can be had reasonably easy here? Or better yet mainland Europe for LHD.

Land Rover 90 / 110.

The septics seem to go mad for them, and are prepared to pay silly money.

Funnily enough that SL is in my watch list! It was to be included on my next update. I think they're elegant old things, especially pre-facelift.

Do it...You will not regret it.

I drove down to burnley to swap my cl500 for one of those sl Mercedes but when I got there the roof was stuck down and after 3 hours pissing about trying to the roof up I went home with the cl. I was gutted as I really wanted one but not enough to take one with a borked roof. I got a speeding ticket on the trip too. Great day out that was.

To give a Shiter an edge in this, I'd let you have Huggy for 4500......

Manky Roller, cross fingers that nothing breaks, then break for parts during the sales month? (assuming the boss is so keen on the idea that he'll let you have the month off on full pay)
