How many projects?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering how many projects you all have? I am on the lookout for a cheap old runner despite (because of?) having three projects on the go-

1.6l Capri, my pride and joy all welded and mechanically sound but needs a shit load of finishing work and spraying.

Puma -accidental one this, I saved it from the scrapper and will start welding it when my enthusiasm or insanity increases to suitable levels.

Mini- A hillclimb project that stalled big time when I lost storage. I had to sell off a load of kit and could only keep what fitted into the empty shell. Not sure if this one will ever see the light of day with me know and I should probably cut and run but don’t have the heart to.

Add to that three motorbikes-

1953 AJS model 20 in bits

Corgi -in one large bit and a few smaller ones

1980s crosser of indeterminate make, runs but scruffy as hell and a lot of fun.

My projects are all at small scales (nothing bigger than 1/24) of necessity.  I haven't even got time to get on with those so a full-size one would be insane.  Says the man with 4 cars and no driveway...

Well I got a bit oveloaded earlier this year with:

Dead Fuego Turbo

R20 TS - running but rotten A pillar

R30 TS - Running, but buggered in every other way!

So I cut right back, and I am even getting rid of my Peugeot 106 so that I can focus money and time on the R30, as it is an iconic Autoshite car!

Capri - we all know how that's going!

Transit mk2 - almost finished camper conversion.

Volvo 740 - was meant to be an interesting daily driver but I'm intent on making it a minter. I'll never learn!

Just the Mercury really isn't a project as it's about as good as it can be now.

In reality I'd say any more than 1 project at a time is madness! Concentrate fully on one thing at a time and when it's done move to the next. It'll never happen though.

Ones I can remember:

Mk2 Golf GTI 16v, currently being painted, shell done, panels next, 80% done I’d say.

Daihatsu Fourtrak, runs drives and stops. Obviously rotten everywhere

Rover 75, needs battery and ABS sensor fitting, then an MoT

1972 Beetle. No engine, stood a few years now.

2005 206 Quicksilver, noisy cam belt tensioner.

1989 VW T25, on the road, body restoration due.

Zafira, on the road, cosmetically challenged. I don’t know where this is currently!

There also a Bora and a 206 XSI that need chopping up.

And my daily Golf, Sarah’s Yaris etc

Think I need something else!

I'm a lightweight, just  the one. A Porsche 944 2.7 bought a few weeks ago. Relatively minor fixing and fettling, - trim, locks, window, ABS etc. It runs well and has long test but looks prettier than it drives at the moment. Suffering slight CBA/buyers remorse at the minute.

Invacars, though technically only one of them is a project.

2CV, returned to the road in January as an unfinished project. It's still unfinished.

Lexus and Honda - have enough going on between them to be considered as projects, but they're both also daily transport.

All of them need attention of some form or another at the moment. Oh, and I forgot the Nippa. That's due a service. As is the Lexus. Need MOAR HOURS.

Currently trolling around in daily driver - SAAB 93 2.0T - lovin it as they say......

Trump 2500S - pretty much completely rebuilt, then a mate 'dropped it' off a trailer and it's done something to the gearbox. Was jammed in gear - stripped, rebuilt, all OK - back in car - stuck in reverse again - left in the corner in shame....

Trump Spitfire - looked flakey, found previous 'restoration' included oiled paper and wob sills amongst other fantastic engineering 'workarounds' - most of the running gear done now. Floors OK - one sill to do and a potential electric conversion....... still mulling that over.

GT6 racer - long term....... in CBA corner.

Just landed:

Rover V8 SE manual...... 2tyres ordered. Tank and couple of bits to pick up, brakes to be fettled and she 'should' be OK.

Lada 2101 - a bit of rot around her - but running sweet as a nut and to be picked up in the next week (I hope)

Far too many projects and never ever enough time - but can't resist buying if they're on the 'want' list..... just need to find more 'corners' to keep 'em! Thank god I don't own a barn or anything like Saabnut!

Stags do that too

short term fix, lift out the gear stick and align the selector rods again.

Long term fix - you have lost the interlock plunger from the central selector rod or it is worn out. it is the spring and 2 ball bearings that sit at the end of the remote change housing.

Projects eh?

Tipo DGT- Needs a partial respray as the paint has gone awful on the roof, needs some rear door repairs as it's gone rusty there too. Also, a big service and cambelt/water pump as I have nothing in writing to suggest when it was last done. Will probably need new front discs when it's taken out of storage too. Oh and I'd like to refurbish the alloys and get a stainless steel exhaust too. Phew.

Good thing I didn't ask for another project car for Christmas right? Oh wait....

Projects

too many or not enough time

1993 Range Rover Vogue 3.9 daily driver, does about 10k miles a year, I tend to fix it when it breaks rather than do anything proactive which it deserves

1973 Triumph Stag pretty much together and a real goer - does barely 2k miles a year. next step is to tidy up the engine bay oh and restore the hardtop

1972 Range Rover "Alan" - ongoing extensive restoration detailed on this forum about 1/3 of the way through I reckon
1972 Range Rover "Redshed" - waiting patiently in the wings for a complete restoration. years before I start this I reckon
2000 Jaguar x308 Sovereign 4 litre - EML issues - will go again.
1969 Land Rover SIIa SWB - runner belongs to Fatha thestag but fixed by me. So far have done Galv chassis swap, bulkhead and wiring loom. I fix it when fathathestag breaks it
1972 Range Rover "Diana" - runner belongs to Fatha thestag - number of niggles that need fixing is mounting! need to dedicate a couple of weekends and get it sorted I guess
2000 Yaris - sista thestags car that is fixed by me when it breaks

Project wise I have

3 door Mk1 sierra base, this is a labour of love which is pretty much waiting to get painted then i can bolt it back together and drive it, i am building a fruity engine for it in between

Mk3 capri laser, i crashed this a few years back and parked it at my parents until i could get around to fixing it, I only started doing this about 6 months ago which ive done 99.9% of the welding on, i have a bit of a jokey bet on that i couldnt get the car repaired with an engine conversion back on road Not costing more than £1000

All my cars are projects, just some more than others. The daily driver is a BX 17rd poverty spec, in need of inner wing welding at some point. Back up is the Xsara van of many miles, needs a heater matrix(currently bodged with a rad weld)and an indicator stalk. Then there is Shonky the Bx TGD, just been servicing him ready for his Paris jaunt at Xmas. Then the ex Barrett Bx TZD estate which welding will be done in any spare time I have when not fixing the others!

My projects:

- Land Rover 101 needs its transmission brake linkage re-fitting and rear prop shaft that was taken off to service the drum brake and replace the leaking oil seal at the back of the transfer box. Also requires a battery and re-commissioning ready for MoT but, as it's on SORN, this can wait till the spring.

- Land Rover 110 is sitting on my drive waiting for me to continue work. It has a rotten bulkhead and on a LR replacement of this is a lot of work. I have a good bulkhead - just need the time (and the weather since it's outside) to get on with it. I may start a thread for this pile of rust.

- Volvo XC70; MOT is imminent and sorting out the feeble handbrake is this weekend's job.

- Boatshite; Sailing yacht and dinghy now laid up for the winter and covered over. Work continues on my 15' rowing boat but the Motor Cutter is still pending. 'Cat piss' tarpaulins are not really up to covering this boatshite so I've got a couple of old lorry sheets for now.

I don't own any projects outright.

I have a 50% stake in the E36 316i currently hiding for the winter in 17-Coffees' garage, and I also help my dad with his 1958 Series 1 Land Rover rebuild when I'm about and when he's actually doing anything with it. It seems to have stalled for about a year now. :(

3 door Mk1 sierra base

Woah, what? Is there a thread for this car that I've missed?

Posted

Yeah there is but I havnt updated it for a good while, if your expecting a dangly mirror base model blue car you will be greatly dissapointed the only way I could save the car is to go down the route I have, photo bucket has also done its business on the pictures

Here it is

two heralds a 61 and 67-  although if the wife asks one is going to be used for parts - I may end up painting them the same colour so she doesn't know I have two and hide one away somewhere, and a 94 Twingo purchased because I fancied one, not the best but was the best one that was for sale in the UK at the time, it has two luxury items power steering and aircon.

no idea when i'll be able to start them, still doing house up, 3 week old baby and more important is lack of skill and funds.

Is a 'project' a car in use, needing work?

Or a car needing work to get legal?

Or a car awaiting work to get legal?

Or a daily that needs ongoing repairs?

No, second thoughts don't answer that cos I've way too many of each/ every category -& a few more besides.

Mine are all "projects" in the sense that they need improvement.    Whether any or all will receive any or all of those improvements merely depends on whether they become impediments to useage.

At present, the Minor is off the road for the first time in 13 years of ownership because a dozen small jobs have now turned into 2 things that  prevent it from being driven.   I am desperately fighting the inevitable decline into full "project" status which generally means "abandoned work".

The Cowley is a proper "project" in that I fished it out of a scrapyard and vowed to spend inordinate amounts of money on it.   Luckily Mrs Rocker is fully behind that intent which means the only thing stopping me getting it finished is actual money.
