Hi, So you don't want it to be connected to theft but don't mind it being connected to fraud, which is theft by another name. Interesting that you make the distinction. ;-):-)

Oh god, how pissed off would the buyers be when awaiting their tax exemption only to discover their newly rung Landy is, in fact, scrapped?

They'll have to dig out the original VIN and start the process all over again. Shame...

bms_motorsalvage

is currently advertising 17 V5s under the 'memorabilia' tag. They range from a Porsche 911 logbook for £5,000 to an Astra Van for £120.

The Astra Van advert helpfully mentions "REGISTERED 04/09/2008 MO.T 10/02/2017 2 KEEPERS HPI CLEAR

A nice, clean history, made to measure. Thanks, eBay.

It's just such an obvious offence, and I know Plod is stretched for resources but surely this has to be a nice easy nick for some young PC anxious to make a name for themselves?

Anyone know any young PC's who fancy a promotion?

I dunno, but I have made various attempts to report this sort of thing to ebay, obviously they don't give 1/10 of a fuck as they make $$$ out of it.

I did email the police a screenshot of one of those bellends off facebook who sell trade insurance/put cars on the MID and leave the list of reg numbers on, they did eventually get back to me and say thanks and give me an email address to send any other "intel" to.

I guess you need to report it in the area the seller lives in, if anyone can be arsed all police forces have websites with details of the area sergeant or whatever, I reckon that's the best way to up the chance of arrest for the seller from 0.00% to 0.0000001%.

DVLA have their own fraud team

https://insidedvla.blog.gov.uk/2015/05/29/behind-the-scenes-with-dvlas-counter-fraud-intelligence-team/

Basically with one man and three women, like some Swansea based version of Charlie's Angels, our intrepid band of virtuous fraud investigators will tirelessly pursue the less desirable elements of the motor trade.

Of course being the DVLA there doesn't appear to be any way of contacting them...which makes them the shittest superheroes ever

Lots of info on who to email etc on the blue RetroRides forum - it's in the stolen section

Posted

...All the plod on there have [email protected] as their email address.

It's 101, as in Room 101 - stick the reports in there and forget about them.

Hi, The problem is although it's an offence to sell a V5 or registration mark without the vehicle, they list them on ebay as memorabilia which sidesteps that one.  The next offence is applying the registration mark to a vehicle that it doesn't belong to, but of course the vendor is not doing that he is leaving that some other sucker who has paid out money for it and then can't register it and gets a visit because there's hopefully a  marker against the reg number.

It would be community spirited to grass these guys up to the DVLA because somewhere down the line it is possible a wealthy collector is going to get ripped off, a young family will innocently buy a stolen or wrecked motor, or one of us will find our new cheap heap has more markers on it than a small office whiteboard.

And some scroat is making money out of ripping people off. Not to mention the number of Land Rovers which are enjoying tax free status despite not deserving it. Now that's just not fair is it?

Remember someone avoiding a tax is placing more burden on you to cover it.

.....What's eBay's opinion on this?

Presumably "How can we make more money out of this category"?

Posted

The link between a V5 on Ebay and a stolen classic story in a classic car magazine might make a more interesting story for some of the weeklies than yet another bloke in shorts polishing his Metro.   With some decent press exposure it might well be that Ebay suddenly re-assess the value of their commission from such items.

It really ought to get some exposure in the classic car press really, if it saves someone getting ripped off.

Posted

Memorabilia I sort of get. If someone particularly loves a particular classic then maybe, just maybe I could see the value in a V5 document.

But a 2007 Astra Diesel or '09 Focus? Really?

And what reason would someone have for buying a vin plate and a logbook that didn't involve transferring them to another car?

Posted

type up vin numbers and reg details and they appear in google searches?

ebay couldnt give a fuck if an item is being sold.

police, understaffed and too busy

dvla dont care

insurance companies.... hmmmm they might have a vested interest
